The Author's own original discoveries upon this question...

It was in these days, if I remember rightly (for in the ordering of time within this narrative I am obliged to rely upon memory alone, seeing that down there at the bottom of the sea it was not in my power to make notes, for want of suitable writing implements), that Opula first inquired after the significance of the word and the notion of "marriage," in the sense that word bears upon dry land.

For this word occurred often in my discourse, and on one occasion I pronounced it with so much sorrow (I cannot too often remind the reader that the oiha tongue consists wholly of interjections) that I awakened the attention and the pity of my mistress.

After a brief hesitation I perceived that it would be best to explain by example; and for this example my own person offered itself most conveniently.

Among those of my acquaintance, in the days when I yet lived at home, it was universally allowed that I lived in a marriage exemplary according to the temper and spirit of the age; this marriage was the crowning of a happy and fortunate love, and I stood in the repute of an enviable husband, possessed of a young and handsome wife, for whose hand, in her time, wealthy and considerable men had contended.

I told her, then, that I had been a young man full of ardor and talent, possessed by a burning faith, a soul called to all that is fair and good.

The future hovered before me as a kind of marvelous possibility; I felt that I might move mountains, only to discover in their place unknown springs, from which happiness and knowledge should flow, a wondrous power that would decide the fate of the whole human race and multiply its significance a hundredfold.

I knew not yet what awaited me, but the holy trinity of the fair, the good, and the true encouraged me to believe that I should attain that clarity, that fullness of life, that highest degree from which I might look about me as a god: I should become a creating and fashioning god, no plaything of fate and nature, but their governor.

It was at this time that I became acquainted with her who was afterward my wife, who then gave direction and substance to my scattered imaginings and desires.

She was then very young, and I a poor young man without property.

Elhatároztam, hogy magamévá teszem s ő, megsejtvén szándékomat, szépségének minden teremtő erejét és hatalmát önzetlenül arra fordította, hogy az én erőmet, kitartásomat serkentse, ösztönző álomképem legyen, aki a csüggedés óráiban fölemel, és cselekvésre buzdít.
I resolved to make her my own, and she, divining my intention, turned all the creative force and power of her beauty, selflessly, to the spurring on of my strength and perseverance, becoming that encouraging vision of a dream which, in hours of despondency, lifted me up and urged me on to action.

Breaking with childish longings and idle reverie, I enrolled at the university, and before long obtained my diploma as a surgeon.

Never shall I forget that happy moment when, with flushed cheeks and in transports of joy, I showed her the document: the fruit of five years of unremitting labor and privation.

A sweet kiss, an encouraging look, was my reward — never in my life was I so well content.

Csakhamar állást kaptam: társultam egyik kartársammal, seborvosi intézetet alapítottunk, s én egy bizonyos megfelelő összeg birtokába jutottam, ami lehetővé tette számomra a nősülést.
Before long I obtained a post: I entered into partnership with a colleague, we founded a surgical establishment, and I came into possession of a certain sufficient sum, which rendered marriage possible to me.

A mátkaság boldog heteit próbáltam ezek után elmagyarázni Opulá-nak, a legváltozatosabb felkiáltásokkal - készülődést a családi fészek berendezésére, együttes tervezgetést, bensőséges csacsogásokat, hogy milyen legyen a hálószoba, a nagy állótükör, a fésülködőköpeny, a kölnivizes kristályüveg stb.
The happy weeks of our betrothal I then endeavored to explain to Opula, with the most varied exclamations — the preparation for the furnishing of our family nest, our planning together, the intimate chatter over what manner of thing the bedchamber should be, the great standing mirror, the dressing-gown, the crystal flask of cologne water, and so forth.

Esküvőnkön nőm mindenkit elkápráztatott szépségével: mindenki gratulált nekem a kincshez, amihez hozzájutottam, s én boldogan fogadtam meg, hogy meg fogom becsülni.
At our wedding my wife dazzled all present with her beauty: everyone congratulated me upon the treasure I had come into possession of, and I happily vowed that I should hold her in due esteem.

Ezután a házaséletnek egy napját festettem le úrnőmnek.
After this I painted for my mistress a picture of a single day of married life.

A keltőóra ütő szavára halkan felkelek, hogy szendergő nőmet ne zavarjam: lábujjhegyen lopódzom ki dolgozószobámba, ahol inasom vár, hogy feladja cipőimet.
At the sound of the alarm clock's striking I rise softly, that I may not disturb my slumbering wife; on tiptoe I steal out to my study, where my manservant waits to help me on with my shoes.

Megreggelizem s a klinikára sietek - délelőttöm szorgalmas munkában telik el, csak a déli órákban van annyi időm, hogy társadalmi kötelezettségeimnek eleget tegyek -, meglátogassak néhány politikai egyesületet, melynek tagja vagyok.
I breakfast, and hasten to the clinic — my forenoon passes in diligent labor, and it is only in the noon hours that I have time enough to discharge my social obligations, that I may visit some few of the political societies of which I am a member.

Hazamenet betérek a boltba, s nőm részére megvásárolom azokat a cikkeket, melyeknek listáját előző este írta össze számomra - a magam számára inasom szokott vásárolni.
Going home, I stop at the shop, and purchase for my wife those articles whose list she has drawn up for me the evening before — for myself, it is my manservant who is accustomed to purchase.

Meanwhile my wife has risen, dressed herself, attended to my children, and driven out upon the promenade, that she might satisfy the demands of our social standing — which requires that the woman show herself and her attire, the better to emphasize her husband's pecuniary condition and distinguished rank.

Egyszerre érkezünk haza, inasom és én: inasom rólam segíti le a kabátot, én pedig nőmről, aki e percben tért meg, kipirulva s hálásan nyújtja csókra a kezét örömében, hogy mindenkinek tetszett.
My manservant and I arrive home at the same moment: my manservant helps me off with my coat, and I do the same office for my wife, who has returned home this very moment, flushed, and gratefully extends her hand to be kissed, in her joy at having pleased everyone.

Ebédhez átöltözik - én közben bort töltök a poharakba, s mikor belép, felállok, hogy a széket alája toljam, míg az inasom ugyanezt teszi nékem az én székemmel.
She changes her attire for dinner — meanwhile I pour the wine into the glasses, and when she enters, I rise, that I may push the chair beneath her, while my manservant does the same office for me with my own chair.

There are always one or two guests at table, who learn good manners from me, and envy me that I may wait upon so handsome and so distinguished a wife.

After dinner my wife reposes a little, and I attend to my correspondence.

Orvosi rendelésem következik, majd ennek végeztével elnézek kicsit a körbe, ahol fontos pártpolitikai kérdésekkel foglalkozunk: mindig van valami, ami ezeket a kérdéseket aktuálissá teszi - gazdasági, kereskedelmi ellentétek más országokkal, amik esetleges összetűzésekre adhatnak alkalmat, ha hazánk és hozzám hasonló polgártársaink érdekeit másképpen megvédeni nem tudjuk.
My medical consultations follow, and when these are concluded, I look in a while at the club, where we occupy ourselves with weighty questions of party politics: there is always some matter that renders these questions of the moment — economic or commercial disputes with other countries, which might furnish occasion for a clash, should we be unable, in some other manner, to defend the interests of our country and of citizens such as myself.

Nőm közben barátnőit látogatja, szabónőjét keresi fel: fáradhatatlan abban a törekvésben, mely a nő legszentebb kötelességét - hogy mindig szép és kívánatos, a férfi tevékenységének buzdítója és jutalma legyen - alkotja.
My wife meanwhile visits her lady friends, and calls upon her dressmaker; she is untiring in that endeavor which constitutes the woman's most sacred duty — to be always fair and desirable, the spur and the reward of the man's activity.

In the evening, when we are left to ourselves, I may then enjoy the aforesaid reward, whose sweetness I had not much need to explain to Opula — a brief and happy exclamation sufficed.

I told my mistress further that my happiness was not, of course, always undisturbed.

Nőm gyakran volt rosszkedvű és lehangolt.
My wife was often out of humor, and cast down in spirit.

Voltak vakmerő férfiak, akik irigyelve boldogságomat, igyekeztek őt elhódítani tőlem.
There were bold men who, envying my happiness, endeavored to win her away from me.

Céljukat hízelgéssel, nagy szerelem és egyéb javak kecsegtető ígérgetésével igyekeztek elérni.
Their design they sought to accomplish by flattery, and by alluring promises of a great love and of sundry other advantages.

My wife was often sorely tempted, and I suffered terribly.

But in the end it was I who always prevailed, and my tempters were obliged to own that in that contest which a Darwin, a Weininger, a Ferenc Molnár, an Endre Ady have described and proclaimed to be the greatest and most dreadful of all contests, I am the stronger.

Egy-két párbajom is akadt, melyekben többnyire én sebesítettem meg ellenfeleimet - mint seborvos, mondhatom, elég súlyos sebek voltak, egyik pláne halálos kimenetelű.
I had also one or two duels, in which for the most part it was I who wounded my adversaries — as a surgeon, I may say the wounds were tolerably grave, one indeed proving fatal.

Beszéltem arról, hogy ezekben a nehéz időkben sokat foglalkoztam azzal a nagy kérdéssel, mely korunkat is leginkább foglalkoztatja: a nő problémájával.
I spoke of how, in these difficult times, I much occupied myself with that great question which most occupies our own age as well: the problem of woman.

I read a great deal, and went often to the theater, as to the forum most stirring, and ever timely, upon the politics of the human soul.

Szépirodalomban járatos ember lévén, bő kivonatokban vázoltam századunk és a múlt század legnagyobb költői alkotásait s ezeknek a tanulságait: lángelméjű férfiak műveit, melyekből tökéletesen megismerhetővé válik az a rejtély, amit nőnek nevezünk.
Being a man well versed in polite letters, I sketched, in ample extracts, the greatest poetic achievements of our century and of the century past, and their lessons — the works of men of genius, from which that mystery we call woman may be made perfectly known.

Beszéltem azokról a nagyokról, akik a férfierkölcs, a magasabb bölcselet éles szemüvegén át rajzolták meg a nőt, s azokról, akik a testi szerelem durva és egyszerű tényeit akarván csak látni, úgyszólván szabad szemmel, tehát tökéletlenebb műszerrel figyelték és ábrázolták őt.
I spoke of those great men who portrayed woman through the keen lens of manly morality and higher philosophy, and of those others who, desiring to see only the coarse and simple facts of carnal love, observed and depicted her as it were with the naked eye, and thus with a less perfect instrument.

Under this one heading came Zola and the Marquis de Sade together, naturalism and pornography alike (of this latter I spoke at some length, touching upon particulars which, out of decency, I cannot here repeat) — and into a separate and distinguished company fell those appointed dissectors of the secret of the female soul — a Flaubert, a Stendhal, a Bataille.

Röviden előadtam a tartalmát egész sereg modern drámának: elvonultattam Ibsent, Strindberget, Maeterlincket, Gerhard Hauptmannt, Shaw-t, Bernsteint.
I set forth briefly the substance of a whole host of modern dramas: I paraded before her Ibsen, Strindberg, Maeterlinck, Gerhart Hauptmann, Shaw, and Bernstein.

A házasságtörési drámáról külön beszéltem, arról a módról, ahogy hol tréfásan (háromszög!), hol tragikusan írták meg a nő ingatag jellemének szörnyű következményeit a férfi sorsában.
Of the drama of adultery I spoke apart, and of the manner in which, now in jest (the triangle!) and now in tragedy, they set down the dreadful consequences of woman's fickle character upon the fate of man.

Whereupon Opula unexpectedly interposed, and put to me that astonishing question, what manner of undergarment and outer garment Strindberg had worn — and what Duse had worn at the dress rehearsal of the play called The Lady of the Camellias.

Arra kért, írjam ezt le részletesebben, mert a többi fejtegetést két szóból is megértette volna, ehhez azonban tüzetesebb adatokra van szüksége.
She desired that I should set this down in greater detail, for the rest of my discourse she could have understood in two words, whereas for this she stood in need of more exact particulars.

Kissé meglepődve engedelmeskedtem: elmondtam, hogy Strindberg toalettjével röviden végezhetek - Európa férfiai nagy vonásokban, úgyszólván egyenruhát hordanak, egyszerű szabású burkot, melynek hivatása elrejteni a férfi meztelenségét meg a test vonalait, minél gazdaságosabb módon: e célra öt cső szolgál: egyikbe a derekunkat, kettőbe a karunkat és kettőbe a lábunkat dugjuk bele.
Somewhat astonished, I obeyed: I told her that I might dispose of Strindberg's toilet briefly — the men of Europe wear, in the main, what is well-nigh a uniform, a covering of simple cut, whose office it is to conceal the male nakedness and the lines of the body, in the most economical manner possible: to this end five tubes serve us: into one we thrust our waist, into two our arms, and into two our legs.

Ezeket a szürke vagy fekete szövetből (soha más színűből) készült csöveket két darabbá varrják össze, kabáttá és nadrággá, oly módon, hogy a meztelen test két természetes választóvonala, derék és térd ne érvényesülhessen.
These tubes, made of grey or black cloth (never of any other color), are sewn together into two pieces, a coat and a pair of breeches, in such a manner that the two natural dividing-lines of the naked body, the waist and the knee, may not assert themselves.

This garb is worn by every man in Europe, and the aforesaid Strindberg wore it too, so long as he lived, though I do not understand in what manner this pertains to the subject.

Nehezebb feladat a második kérdésre felelni - dámáink a legváltozatosabb és leggazdagabb ruhákban járnak ugyanis: ez öltözékeknek célja, éppen úgy, mint az állatvilágban, kettős: csekély részben szolgálják az időjárás elleni védelmet, fő feladatuk a nőknek sajátos, női értelemben való érvényesülése, a férficsábítás, a férfi vágyainak ingerlése oly módon, hogy a nő illatos és letépni való virágnak, vagy még inkább kívánatos gyümölcsnek hatását keltse, s fokozza értékét a férfi szemében.
A harder task it is to answer the second question — for our ladies go about in the most varied and the richest of raiment: the purpose of these garments, precisely as in the animal kingdom, is twofold: in small part they serve as protection against the weather, but their chief office is that peculiar assertion of woman in the feminine sense, the seduction of man, the provocation of man's desires, in such manner that the woman may produce the effect of a fragrant flower ripe for the plucking, or still more, of a desirable fruit, and so enhance her worth in the eyes of the man.

Opula remarked that she would have me employ fewer similes — their purpose she could not discern, and she declared that our land-dwelling bulloks stand in exactly the same relation to their similes as those degenerate (disfigured) oihas who live among us, and whom I am accustomed to call "women," stand to the garments with which they seek to render perfect the imperfection of their bodies.

If we cannot love, or make others love, with sufficient passion and delight, the thing of which we speak, we straightway drag forth a simile to supply the want, as does the merchant who says of butter that "it is like almonds," or of almonds that "they are like butter," because he does not trust that the goods can speak for themselves, and produce their effect by their own qualities.

If our degenerate oihas have need of garments before we can desire them as flower or as fruit, this can only be, evidently, because without their garments they are not flower enough, and not fruit enough.

For the rest she did not hold this to be essential, for on the strength of my discourse she was now more or less clear upon what she had wished to know.

Only she did not yet understand how it came about that, when they found me, I was clothed in a garment of the very sort I had described as belonging to the bulloks.

Most végre megértettem, hogy Opula engem nem tart bullok-nak, azaz férfinak, hanem az elkorcsosodott oihá-k neméhez számít - magához hasonlónak, nőnek vél, tekintettel testi megjelenésemre, mely az ő szempontjából valóban inkább hasonlított "érzelmes lény"-hez, azaz nőhöz, mint ama szörnyetegekhez, akik Capilláriában a felséges férfit képviselik.
I now understood at last that Opula did not take me for a bullok, that is to say a man, but reckoned me to the sex of the degenerate oihas — she supposed me, that is, to resemble herself, a woman, having regard to my bodily appearance, which, from her point of view, did indeed bear more resemblance to a "sentimental being," that is, a woman, than to those monsters who in Capillária represent the exalted male.

For the present I took care not to enlighten her upon her error — honestly speaking, in this country the error was rather flattering to me — but it seemed likewise the more prudent course not to instruct her in the truth of the matter; for, alas, I had no reason to hope that she would still converse with me and hold me worthy of her regard, were she to learn that in essence I stood nearer to those worms which had aroused in her only contempt and disgust.

To this false belief I owed her confidence, and I had neither the right, nor yet the courage, to refuse that confidence.

Though she held me a degenerate one, she held me an oiha nonetheless, and reckoned that I should understand her, and that in the end we should agree upon the subject of the bulloks.

Ruházatomra vonatkozóan tehát kitérő választ adtam, céloztam holmi kalózokra, akik megtámadták hajónkat, mielőtt az elsüllyedt, s engem kényszerítettek rá, hogy átöltözzem!
Touching my raiment, then, I gave an evasive answer, and hinted at certain pirates who had assailed our ship before she went down, and had compelled me to change my garb!

From this Opula learned that our own bulloks are, in bodily size and development, much of a piece with us oihas — a fact singular enough, yet one which "by no means signifies," as she saw likewise from my own confessions, "that there exists, in point of soul, of understanding, or of feeling, any difference between them worthy of mention, as against the bulloks of Capillária."

Ezt magam is elismertem, úgymond, mindazzal, amit kérdéseire adott válasz formájában elbeszéltem.
This I myself owned, so she said, by the whole of what I had related in answer to her questions.

Álmélkodásom nem ismert határt e váratlan kijelentésre: hiszen éppen az ellenkezőjéről akartam őt meggyőzni mindannak, amit, íme, levon előadásomból.
My astonishment knew no bounds at this unlooked-for declaration: for it was precisely of the contrary of all this that I had sought to persuade her, of all that she now, behold, drew forth from my discourse.

Kértem, mondaná el, miben látja ezt a hasonlóságot, amihez képest a különbségek "említésre érdemesnek" se mondhatók.
I begged that she would tell me wherein she perceived this likeness, beside which the differences could not even be called worthy of mention.

Opula válaszából végre megtudtam, ami eddig csak homályos, kialakulatlan sejtelem formájában élt bennem, mint kisgyermekben a származás titka; megtudtam, hogy természetrajzi és élettani szempontból milyen szerepet játszanak Capilláriában a bullok-ok a fajfenntartás nagy munkájában.
From Opula's answer I learned at last that which had hitherto lived within me only in the shape of a dim and unformed intimation, as the secret of one's begetting lives within a small child; I learned what part, from the standpoint of natural history and of physiology, the bulloks play in Capillária in the great work of the perpetuation of the species.

Röviden, néhány szóban közlök erről annyit, amennyit a tudományos tárgyilagosság és útleíró lelkiismeretem okvetlenül megkövetel: távol áll tőlem, hogy illetlen részletekkel háborítsam fel a szemérmes olvasót.
Briefly, I shall set down in a few words only so much of this as scientific objectivity and my conscience as a chronicler of travels must needs require: it is far from my purpose to disturb the modest reader with indecent particulars.

Nos tehát: az oihá-k, éppen úgy, mint a mi asszonyaink, eleveneket szülnek, mégpedig önmagukhoz hasonló oihá-kat.
Now then: the oihas, precisely as our own women, bring forth their young alive, and indeed oihas resembling themselves.

Of the question of fertilization very little is understood in Capillária; most of them do not even know that anything more is needed for the conception of the fetus than sound organs and good nourishment.

A few learned oihas, of a kind resembling our own "degenerate" sort, have nevertheless demonstrated — and this I succeeded in learning only after long cross-questioning — that those oihas from whose diet is wanting that delicacy which was served up to me on the first day of my sojourn there, the freshly pressed, living bullok-marrow, do not bring forth young until they have once more conceived a desire for that delicacy.

Úgy látszik hát, a bullok-velőben van valami anyag, ami nélkül nincs szaporodás: de erre nézve megoszolnak a vélemények.
It appears, then, that there is in bullok-marrow some substance without which there is no propagation; but upon this point opinions are divided.

As for the bulloks, they, by every sign, spring to life out of the refuse of the sea floor — that they should propagate among themselves, as do the other worms and creeping things of the sea floor, there is no evidence whatsoever — nor has it yet been possible to demonstrate whether they bring forth their young alive, or lay eggs, as do reptiles.

This much is certain, that they live only in those regions of the boundless sea floor where oihas are likewise to be found: in the wild they do not occur, but in the company of the oihas, always and everywhere, in very great numbers, as a species of parasite — nor is there any need to take thought for their breeding, for they breed of themselves in sufficiently great numbers, to that end which, as domestic worms, they serve in bringing about the conditions of life of the oihas.

So much was it that I learned from Opula touching the natural history of the bulloks.

And this would be little, and by no means satisfying, were it not in my power to add a few conclusions of my own, as the fruit of my modest researches — researches which I carried out independently, and without instruction from the oihas, in Capillária.

These conclusions, or rather these discoveries, might be reckoned, in our own scientific thought, a result of very great significance indeed: in Capillária they proved to be of so uninteresting a nature that when I communicated them to Opula, in the hope that she would celebrate me as a Capillárian Darwin or Newton, who had discovered the principle of kinship with the bulloks, she shrugged her shoulders, and said that what I told her might well be so, but that it was not in the least entertaining or amusing.

The road and the manner of my discovery I shall not set down, for it would be tedious; its final result, in brief, is this:

The bulloks, which in Capillária are held to be useful worms, as among us the silkworm, and of which it is allowed at most that they assist the propagation of the oihas after the manner of a stimulant — in reality, even today, as the legend of oiha-mythology already mentioned maintains, derive from the very body of the oihas: only the peculiar and degenerate manner of their birth has hidden this fact from the eyes of the oihas.

Minden oiha születésekor száz-kétszáz bullok is napvilágra kerül - mégpedig a placentában, azaz a méhlepényben.
At the birth of every oiha there come likewise to the light of day some hundred or two hundred bulloks — and that within the placenta, that is, the afterbirth.

These newborn little bulloks are worms exceeding small, scarcely visible to the naked eye; it is understandable that the oihas, who do not relish grubbing about among such disgusting matter, as do our own natural scientists, should not hitherto have taken notice of them.

They swarm within the afterbirth, and at the time of birth there is likewise, in the excrement of the oihas, such a small bullok-fetus; if then the afterbirth and the excrement be swept away by the running water, the little bulloks take hold among the branches of the algae and the corals, or else become mingled into the mud of the sea floor: there they set out upon their development.

Hence the belief that the refuse of the sea floor disgorges them out of itself.

In the final reckoning, then, according to our own scientific thought, it might be said that the oihas and the bulloks stand in the same relation to one another as, among us, do men and women.

But in Capillária, where the notion of the "two sexes" is a thing unknown, where the concepts of man, of the superior being, of the crown of creation, apply exclusively to the oihas, to maintain that an oiha and a bullok stand toward one another as the two halves of a single whole, as two equal factors of the highest possibility of life — this would be as ridiculous and as foolish an assertion as if, among us on dry land, some crack-brained scholar should attempt to demonstrate that human dignity is represented, not by reason and understanding, the seat of the soul, the human brain, but by, say, the liver, or the kidney, or the spleen, or the organ of generation, or some fermenting fungus that assists our digestion.
