**1** Sein Blick ist vom Vorübergehn der Stäbe
His gaze, from the passing of the bars,
> A noun that takes an umlaut: der Stab, 'rod, bar', adds an umlaut to form its plural, die Stäbe. Vom Vorübergehn der Stäbe means 'from the passing of the bars', with der Stäbe a genitive plural depending on Vorübergehn. Vorübergehn is a noun made from the verb vorübergehen, 'to pass by'.

**2** so müd geworden, daß er nichts mehr hält.
has grown so weary that it holds nothing more.
> Old spelling of the conjunction dass: daß is the pre-1996 spelling of dass, the conjunction meaning 'that', which introduces a subordinate clause. Because it is subordinating, the finite verb hält moves to the end of its clause. Rilke's text keeps this older spelling rather than the modern one.

**3** Ihm ist, als ob es tausend Stäbe gäbe
To him it is as if there were a thousand bars

**4** und hinter tausend Stäben keine Welt.
and behind a thousand bars no world.

**5** Der weiche Gang geschmeidig starker Schritte,
The soft pace of supple, powerful strides,
> Adverb describing the stride: geschmeidig means 'supple, lithe, smooth'. Here it is an adverb modifying starker, 'powerful', describing how the strides move. starker Schritte is a genitive plural, 'of powerful strides', depending on Gang, 'pace, gait'.

**6** der sich im allerkleinsten Kreise dreht,
that turns in the very smallest of circles,

**7** ist wie ein Tanz von Kraft um eine Mitte,
is like a dance of force around a center

**8** in der betäubt ein großer Wille steht.
in which a great will stands numbed.

**9** Nur manchmal schiebt der Vorhang der Pupille
Only sometimes the curtain of the pupil

**10** sich lautlos auf –. Dann geht ein Bild hinein,
lifts soundlessly –. Then an image enters,

**11** geht durch der Glieder angespannte Stille –
passes through the taut stillness of the limbs –

**12** und hört im Herzen auf zu sein.
and ceases, in the heart, to be.
