## Verbs. The unreal or subjunctive - hätte, könnte, wäre, würde, 1 of 2

### Forms for what is not real

The subjunctive is the set of verb forms for situations that are not real. Another name for these forms is the unreal.

Four forms are common: hätte, könnte, wäre and würde. They are equivalent to English would and could.

They express a polite request or suggestion. They express a wish that may not come true. They express something that depends on a condition.

### The four unreal verbs

Hätte, könnte, wäre and würde are the unreal forms of haben, können, sein and werden.

As in the past tense, ich and er share one form. Wir and sie share one form.

The er-form ends in e and the wir-form in en: könnte, könnten. The du-form ends in st and the ihr-form in t: könntest, könntet.

These are the most common unreal forms in German.

### Unreal forms for polite requests

A major use of the unreal is the polite request or suggestion. All four forms are used, with or without gern or bitte.

Hätte or würde plus gern works like möchte. Ich hätte gern einen leichten Anzug: I'm interested in a light-weight suit.

Vielleicht könnte Ihre Frau mal zu ihm in die Sprechstunde gehen is a polite suggestion: perhaps your wife could go to his office sometime.

**115** Ich hätte gern Rumpsteak mit Röstkartoffeln. (10)
I'd like steak with fried potatoes.

**116** Hätten Sie einen Augenblick Zeit für mich? (18)
Could you spare me a moment of your time?

We could hang the big picture over the sofa.

**118** Könnten wir in eurem Wagen mitfahren? (11)
Could we go with you in your car?

**119** Ja, das wäre nett. (12)

I'm interested in a light-weight suit.

**125** Jetzt würde ich noch gern die Kongresshalle sehen.

Would you please fill out this registration blank?

Wenn Sie den Jungen jetzt gleich in die Sprechstunde bringen würden, könnte ihn Herr Doktor sofort behandeln. (18)
If you'd bring the boy right to the office now the doctor could treat him immediately.

The forms hätte (or hätten), könnte(n), wäre(n) and würde(n) have occurred at various places in our units to date.

Notice that these verb forms are equivalent to "would" or "could" forms or phrases in English. They indicate 1) something desired but not yet achieved, as a polite request or suggestion, or 2) something which may not be achieved, as a wish, or 3) something possible or hypothetical which depends for its achievement on the fulfillment of an additional factor or condition. In other words they indicate UNREAL situations. For this reason they are frequently called UNREAL forms. You will also hear them referred to as SUBJUNCTIVE forms.
```
```
A. VERBS. THE UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE - hätte, könnte, wäre, würde

II

Hätte, könnte, wäre and würde are UNREAL forms of the irregular verbs haben, können, sein and werden. The complete inventory of UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE forms for these four verbs is given below. As in the Past Tense, ich- and er-forms are identical, likewise wir- and sie-forms.

er-form: hätte, könnte, wäre, würde

wir-form: hätten, könnten, wären, würden

du-form: hättest, könntest, wärest, würdest

ihr-form: hättet, könntet, wäret, würdet

These are the most common and most frequent UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE forms you will encounter in German. (Note that in rapid and informal speech the second vowel of wäre, wären, wärest and wäret is often not pronounced.)
```
```
A. VERBS. THE UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE - hätte, könnte, wäre, würde

III.1

Ich hätte gern einen leichten Anzug.
I'm interested in a light-weight suit.

Jetzt würde ich noch gern die Kongresshalle sehen.
Now I'd like to see the Congress Hall too.

Würden Sie bitte diese beiden Anzüge aufbügeln lassen?
Would you please have these suits pressed?

Vielleicht könnte Ihre Frau mal zu ihm in die Sprechstunde gehen.
Perhaps your wife could go to his office sometime.

Wen würden Sie vorschlagen?
Who would you suggest?

Und das wäre ... ?
And that would be ... ?

We have noted that UNREAL forms express basically three types of situations: 1) a polite request or suggestion, 2) a wish which the speaker may not expect to be fulfilled, or 3) a possible or hypothetical action or state which is dependent or contingent upon another action or state.

1) The following are additional examples of questions, requests and suggestions we have encountered containing UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE forms:

The use of hätte and würde plus gern in requests is very much like the use of möchte discussed in Unit 4. However, all four UNREAL forms - hätte, könnte, wäre and würde - frequently occur in sentences of this type, with or without an additional modifier like gern or bitte. A major function of the UNREAL is thus as a politeness formula.
```
## Verbs. The unreal or subjunctive - hätte, könnte, wäre, würde, 2 of 2
### Unreal forms for wishes
An unreal wish is a wish that the speaker may not expect to come true. Wünschte or wünschten introduces it.
Any unreal form can occur in the wish. Ich wünschte, er wäre hier: I wish he were here.
Wir wünschten, er würde mehr Zeit für uns haben has würde with an infinitive.
### Unreal forms with a condition
A conditional sentence is a sentence in which one possible action or state depends on another. The condition is a clause that begins with wenn.
Es würde nichts schaden, wenn Sie Ihre Diät einhalten würden: it wouldn't hurt a bit if you would stick to your diet.
Both clauses have an unreal form. The first says what would happen. The wenn-clause gives the condition.
### A condition left unsaid
A conditional sentence can be incomplete. The wenn-clause may be understood and not spoken.
Ja, das wäre nett has no wenn-clause. It can be understood as the longer Es wäre nett, wenn Sie für mich auch eine Karte besorgen würden.
### Würde with any infinitive
Würde plus any infinitive makes an unreal verb phrase. Würde haben means the same as hätte. Würde können means könnte. Würde sein means wäre.
Es wäre nett, Sie dort zu treffen. Es würde nett sein, Sie dort zu treffen. Both mean it would be nice to meet you there.
English has almost no special unreal forms. It uses would, could or a past tense. Were, as in I wish he were here, is one of the few.
**130** Ich wünschte, dass du länger bleiben könntest.
I wish that you could stay longer.
**131** Ich wünschte, er wäre hier.
I wish he were here.
**132** Wir wünschten, er würde mehr Zeit für uns haben.
We wish he had more time for us.
**133** Es wäre vielleicht gut, wenn er eine Tetanusspritze bekommen würde.
It would be a good thing perhaps if he were to get a tetanus shot.
**134** Es würde nichts schaden, wenn Sie Ihre Diät einhalten würden.
It wouldn't hurt a bit if you would stick to your diet.
**135** Darf ich für Sie auch eine Karte besorgen?
May I get you a ticket too?
**136** Ja, das wäre nett.
Yes, that would be nice.
**137** Es wäre nett, wenn Sie für mich auch eine Karte besorgen würden.
It would be nice if you would get me a ticket too.
**138** Es würde nett sein, Sie dort zu treffen.
It would be nice to meet you there.
**139** Es wäre nett, Sie dort zu treffen.
It would be nice to meet you there.
**140** Würden Sie morgen um ein Uhr Zeit für mich haben?
Would you have time to see me tomorrow at one o'clock?
**141** Hätten Sie morgen um ein Uhr Zeit für mich?
Would you have time to see me tomorrow at one o'clock?
**142** Es würde kein Problem sein, das neue Auto zu kaufen, wenn wir mehr Geld hätten.
Buying the new car would be no problem if we had more money.
**143** Es wäre kein Problem, das neue Auto zu kaufen, wenn wir mehr Geld hätten.
Buying the new car would be no problem if we had more money.
**144** Ich würde morgen mit ihm sprechen können, wenn er um zehn Uhr hier wäre.
I would be able to talk to him tomorrow if he were here at ten o'clock.
**145** Ich könnte morgen mit ihm sprechen, wenn er um zehn Uhr hier sein würde.
I could talk to him tomorrow if he were to be here at ten o'clock.
I wish that you could stay longer.
Ich wünschte, er wäre hier.
I wish he were here.
Wir wünschten, er würde mehr Zeit für uns haben.
We wish he had more time for us.
2) Only one example of a wish (paragraph I,f) has occurred in the basic sentences so far. Any UNREAL form may occur in a wish sentence however.
Note that the special forms wünschte or wünschten introduce a wish which the speaker may not expect to be fulfilled. This type of wish sentence can be called an UNREAL WISH.
Es wäre vielleicht gut, wenn er eine Tetanusspritze bekommen würde.
It would be a good thing perhaps if he were to get a tetanus shot.
Es würde nichts schaden, wenn Sie Ihre Diät einhalten würden.
It wouldn't hurt a bit if you would stick to your diet.
3) Here are two additional examples from the basic sentences in which UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE forms indicate that a possible state or action is contingent upon or conditioned by another possible state or action.
The contingency or condition is given in a clause beginning with wenn. These sentences are called CONDITIONAL SENTENCES.
Darf ich für Sie auch eine Karte besorgen?
May I get you a ticket too?
Ja, das wäre nett.
Yes, that would be nice.
Es wäre nett, wenn Sie für mich auch eine Karte besorgen würden.
It would be nice if you would get me a ticket too.
CONDITIONAL SENTENCES may or may not be complete. The condition, that is, the wenn-clause, may be implied but not expressed.
The second sentence here may be thought of as actually equivalent to:
Es wäre kein Problem, das neue Auto zu kaufen, wenn wir mehr Geld hätten.
Buying the new car would be no problem if we had more money.
Ich würde morgen mit ihm sprechen können, wenn er um zehn Uhr hier wäre.
I would be able to talk to him tomorrow if he were here at ten o'clock.
Ich könnte morgen mit ihm sprechen, wenn er um zehn Uhr hier sein würde.
I could talk to him tomorrow if he were to be here at ten o'clock.
Forms of würde may occur with any infinitive to form an UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE verb phrase. The phrases würde ... haben, würde ... können and würde ... sein thus occur in German in addition to the special forms hätte, könnte and wäre.
Notice that the phrases with würde in German are everywhere equivalent to the special UNREAL forms. In English we have almost no special UNREAL or SUBJUNCTIVE forms. In politeness formulas or in conditional sentences we normally use a phrase with "would" or "could" or a past tense form of the verb. The form "were" and the phrase "were to" do occur, especially in formal style, with a singular as well as a plural subject and may thus be thought of as "subjunctive" in English, but there are very few such distinctive forms.
## Prepositions - ausser, statt, trotz, wegen
### Ausser takes the dative
The preposition ausser is followed by the dative.
Ausser diesen Tabletten means in addition to these tablets. Diesen is dative.
### Three more prepositions with the genitive
Statt, trotz and wegen are followed by the genitive. They mean instead of, in spite of and on account of.
Wegen can also stand after its noun. Wegen meines Herzens and meines Herzens wegen mean the same.
With während, these are the most common prepositions with the genitive.
**146** Ausser diesen Tabletten nehmen Sie täglich dreimal je fünfzehn Tropfen ...
In addition to these tablets take fifteen drops three times a day ...
### More verbs with fixed prepositions
More verbs go with one preposition. Denken an is to think of. Hoffen auf is to hope for. Sprechen über is to talk about.
The English meaning can differ much from the meanings of the verb and the preposition apart.
After an, auf, über and unter the case is fixed for each pair, with no rule. Learn it with the pair.
The preposition always has an object. A pronoun for a person keeps its normal form: Ich denke an sie. For a thing or an idea, da- or dar- joins the preposition: Ich denke daran.
We discussed verbs and prepositions in Units 16 and 17 and reviewed those that had occurred up to that point as VERB-PREPOSITION COMPLEXES. Many of the verbs and prepositions we have encountered separately up to now also function as verb-preposition complexes. The most common of these additional combinations are listed as follows:
Note again that the English equivalents of these verb-preposition complexes sometimes differ considerably from the meanings of the verbs and prepositions separately. The occurrence of dative or accusative forms after the prepositions an, auf, über and unter is quite arbitrarily fixed and must be learned for each combination. In verb-preposition complexes the preposition always has an object. Remember that when the object is a pronoun referring to a human being regular pronoun forms are used, but when the object is a pronoun referring to something inanimate or abstract the special combining forms da- or dar- are used.
## Verbs and prepositions, 3 of 3
### A clause after the preposition
The object of the preposition can also be a clause or an infinitive phrase.
Then the preposition always joins da- or dar-. This form points ahead to the clause or the phrase and stands in for it.
Sie rechnet damit, dass wir nächstes Jahr nach England kommen. Damit points ahead to the clause with dass.
English often uses a form in -ing here: she's counting on our coming to England.
**172** Er denkt daran, im Herbst nach Deutschland zu fahren.
He's thinking of going to Germany in the fall.
**173** Sie rechnet damit, dass wir nächstes Jahr nach England kommen.
She's counting on our coming to England next year.
C. VERBS AND PREPOSITIONS
II
Er denkt daran, im Herbst nach Deutschland zu fahren.
He's thinking of going to Germany in the fall.
Sie rechnet damit, dass wir nächstes Jahr nach England kommen.
She's counting on our coming to England next year.
Verb-preposition complexes also occur with dependent clauses or infinitive phrases.
In this construction the preposition is always combined with the special pronoun forms da- or dar-. They anticipate the dependent clause or infinitive phrase and replace it as object of the preposition. Notice that in English the preposition is often followed by the -ing form of the verb.
## Conjunctions - denn
### Denn joins equal parts
Denn is a sentence connector, like aber, oder, sondern and und. These five are the common ones.
Normal word order follows denn.
Ja, das werde ich bald tun, denn bei unserer grossen Familie ist alle Augenblicke einer krank. Here denn means for, and ist comes second after it.
**174** Ja, das werde ich bald tun, denn bei unserer grossen Familie ist alle Augenblicke einer krank.
D. CONJUNCTIONS - denn
Ja, das werde ich bald tun, denn bei unserer grossen Familie ist alle Augenblicke einer krank.
Yes, I'll do that soon, for with a family as large as ours there's somebody sick all the time.
In this unit we have encountered the conjunction denn.
Denn is a sentence connector, or co-ordinating conjunction, followed by normal word order. With aber, oder, sondern and und it completes the group of common co-ordinating conjunctions.
## The indefinite relative pronoun - was
### Was after alles, das, etwas and nichts
Was is a relative pronoun too. Its relative clause refers back to one of the indefinite words alles, das, etwas and nichts.
Nichts, was er sagte, war richtig: nothing he said was right. Das ist etwas, was ich wirklich sehr empfehlen kann.
After a preposition, was becomes wo- or wor-, as the question word was does. Das war alles, woran sie gedacht hatte.
**175** Seitdem ich zu Hause bin, strengt mich alles, was ich tue, sehr an.
Since I've been home again everything I do fatigues me very much.
**180** Das ist etwas, worüber man sich freuen kann.
That's something you can be happy about.
```
FSI German Basic Course (1961), Unit 18, Notes on Grammar

E. THE INDEFINITE RELATIVE PRONOUN - was

Seitdem ich zu Hause bin, strengt mich alles, was ich tue, sehr an.
Since I've been home again everything I do fatigues me very much.

Nichts, was er sagte, war richtig.
Nothing (that) he said was right.

Das ist etwas, was ich wirklich sehr empfehlen kann.
That is something (that) I can recommend very highly.

Das, was er schrieb, war sehr gut.
What he wrote was very good.

Das war alles, woran sie gedacht hatte.
That was all that she was thinking of.

Das ist etwas, worüber man sich freuen kann.
That's something you can be happy about.

In this unit we have encountered a new type of relative clause, introduced by the pronoun was.

The INDEFINITE RELATIVE PRONOUN was introduces relative clauses referring back to the indefinite words alles, das, etwas and nichts.

Like the question-word was it has the special combining form wo- or wor- after prepositions.
