## Adjectives, 1 of 5

### Adjectives with and without endings

Some German adjectives have an ending and some do not: eine schöne Stadt, but Das Essen ist dort sehr gut.

An attributive adjective has an ending. It stands between a specifier and a noun: das amerikanische Konsulat, ein guter Roman.

A predicate adjective has no ending. A verb often separates it from the noun or pronoun it describes: Das Essen ist dort sehr gut.

### Predicate adjectives

A predicate adjective never has an ending.

It can come after the noun it describes: Die Wirtschaftsabteilung ist nicht sehr gross.

It can also come before the noun: Sehr schön ist diese neue französische Briefmarke. Schön still has no ending.

### Adjectives as adverbs

German also uses adjectives as adverbs: Sprechen Sie bitte langsam. Please speak slowly.

Like a predicate adjective, an adjective used as an adverb never has an ending: Er spricht ausgezeichnet deutsch.

**125** München ist eine schöne Stadt.
Munich is a beautiful city.

**126** Das Essen ist dort sehr gut.
The food is very good there.

**127** In welcher Gegend ist das amerikanische Konsulat?
What part of town is the American Consulate in?

**128** Er trifft einen alten Bekannten.
He meets an old acquaintance.

**129** Hier ist ein guter Roman.
Here's a good novel.

**130** Meine Schreibmaschine ist kaputt.
My typewriter is out of order.

**131** Die Wirtschaftsabteilung ist nicht sehr gross.
The Economic Section is not very large.

**132** Sehr schön ist diese neue französische Briefmarke.
(A) very beautiful (specimen) is this new French stamp.

**133** Ich verstehe Sie gut.
I understand you well.

**134** Sprechen Sie bitte langsam.
Please speak slowly.

**135** Er spricht ausgezeichnet deutsch.

Adjectives have occurred in a number of sentences in the first five units: Note that some of these adjectives have endings: schön-e, amerikanisch-e, alt-en, gut-er; while some do not: gut, interessant. The adjectives without endings are commonly called Predicate Adjectives; they are often seperated by a verb from the noun or pronoun they modify. The adjectives with endings are commonly called Attributive Adjectives. They occur in a SPECIFIER-ADJECTIVE-NOUN sequence: das amerikanische Konsulat, ein guter Roman.

## Adjectives, 2 of 5

An attributive adjective between a specifier and a noun always has an ending.

After a der-type specifier the ending is -e or -en: der neue Vizekonsul, den neuen Vizekonsul, dem neuen Vizekonsul, des neuen Vizekonsuls.

After an ein-type specifier the ending is -e, -en, -er or -es: ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, einen amerikanischen Schriftsteller, Ihr neues Auto, meine neue Sekretärin.

The ending changes with the case and with the noun: der-noun, das-noun, die-noun or plural.

4. If there is more than one adjective in a sequence, they all have the same form.

5. Except for the number "one", which is the specifier ein, and ordinal numbers like "first", "second", etc., which will be dealt with later on, the numerals have NO ENDINGS and do not affect the forms of adjectives in a SPECIFIER-ADJECTIVE-NOUN sequence at all.

### Missing nouns, two adjectives, numerals

The noun can be left out when the context makes it clear. The adjective keeps its ending: Ich habe hier nur seine alte. English uses one: his old one.

When two adjectives stand together, both have the same ending: diesem schönen alten Haus.

Numerals have no ending and do not change the adjective: meine zwei alten Kollegen.

Ein, one, is a specifier, so it is not one of these numerals. Ordinal numbers are also different. An ordinal number gives a place in a series, such as first or second.

### Adjectives used as nouns

Some attributive adjectives are used as nouns: der Bekannte, ein Bekannter. Their endings are the same as an adjective's.

One such noun can name a man or a woman, and the form changes to match: ein Deutscher, eine Deutsche.

The form also changes with the specifier. After a der-type specifier: der Deutsche. After an ein-type specifier: ein Deutscher.

The plural is the same for men and women: die Deutschen.

## Question-word pronouns with prepositions

### Who with a preposition

When the question word stands for a person, it takes its ordinary pronoun form after a preposition. This is the accusative or the dative: mit wem, für wen.

In English the preposition usually comes last, as in the question Who is he talking to. German always puts the preposition first, as in the question Mit wem spricht er.

### What with a preposition

When the question word stands for a thing, wo- can replace it after a preposition: womit, wovon. Um was and worum both mean what about.

If the preposition begins with a vowel, the form is wor-: worum.

Da- replaces a pronoun in the same way: damit, davon.

**188** Mit wem spricht er?
Who is he talking to?

**189** Zu wem soll ich gehen?
Who am I supposed to go to?

**190** Für wen tun Sie das?
Who are you doing that for?

**191** Um was handelt es sich? Worum handelt es sich?
What is it about?

**192** Wovon spricht sie?
What is she speaking of?

**193** Womit schreiben Sie lieber, mit dem Füller oder mit der Schreibmaschine?
What do you prefer to write with, pen or typewriter?

```
C. QUESTION-WORD PRONOUNS WITH PREPOSITIONS
I
Mit wem spricht er?
Who is he talking to?
Zu wem soll ich gehen?
Who am I supposed to go to?
Für wen tun Sie das?
Who are you doing that for?
When a question-word pronoun in a prepositional phrase refers to a human being, the regular pronoun form is used. Conversational English usually ends the sentence with the preposition, although formal and literary usage permit placing it at the beginning: For whom are you doing that? Note that German however always requires the sequence of preposition first, followed by object form (accusative or dative) of the pronoun.
C. QUESTION-WORD PRONOUNS WITH PREPOSITIONS
II
Um was handelt es sich? Worum handelt es sich?
What is it about?
Wovon spricht sie?
What is she speaking of?
Womit schreiben Sie lieber, mit dem Füller oder mit der Schreibmaschine?
What do you prefer to write with, pen or typewriter?
When an inanimate object is referred to, a question-word pronoun in a prepositional phrase may be replaced by the special form wo-. This is similar to the replacement of the pronoun by da- in such forms as daneben, damit, davon, etc., as noted in Unit 3. If the preposition begins with a vowel the special combining form is wor- (worum, worauf, woran, etc.)
