## Specifiers and Adjectives, 1 of 3

### Five more words before a noun

Five more words and phrases can stand before an adjective or a noun: alle, ein paar, was für, etwas and nichts.

Alle is a specifier. The other four are not. After ein paar, etwas or nichts, an adjective has the forms it has with no specifier: ein paar weisse Hemden, etwas Passendes.

### Alle as a specifier

Alle means all. It is a der-type specifier.

In the singular it usually ends in -es or -em: alles, allem. It stands alone or has only an adjective after it: Alles andere kaufe ich morgen.

In the plural it stands alone or begins a specifier-adjective-noun sequence: In allen grossen Städten finden Sie einige gute Hotels.

**150** Das ist alles.
That's everything.

**151** Die finden Sie in allen Preislagen.
You'll find them in all price ranges.

**152** Können Sie mir ein paar weisse Hemden zeigen?
Can you show me a few white shirts?

**153** Was für ein Stoff ist das?
What kind of material is that?

**154** In der Preislage finden Sie sicher etwas Passendes.
In that price range you'll certainly find something suitable.

**155** Haben Sie alles?
Do you have everything?

**156** Ich bin mit allem zufrieden.
I'm satisfied with everything.

**157** Alles andere kaufe ich morgen.
I'll buy everything else tomorrow.

**158** Nicht alle deutschen Wagen sind klein.
Not all German cars are small.

**159** In allen grossen Städten finden Sie einige gute Hotels.
In all large cities you'll find a few good hotels.

A. Specifiers and Adjectives

I

Das ist alles.
That's everything.

Die finden Sie in allen Preislagen.
You'll find them in all price ranges.

Können Sie mir ein paar weisse Hemden zeigen?
Can you show me a few white shirts?

Was für ein Stoff ist das?
What kind of material is that?

In der Preislage finden Sie sicher etwas Passendes.
In that price range you'll certainly find something suitable.

In the last five units we have presented the forms and patterns of specifiers and adjectives in sequences and standing alone. A few additional items we have encountered should also be noted. Here are examples:
```
```
A. Specifiers and Adjectives

I.1. All- is a der-type specifier

Haben Sie alles?
Do you have everything?

Ich bin mit allem zufrieden.
I'm satisfied with everything.

Alles andere kaufe ich morgen.
I'll buy everything else tomorrow.

Nicht alle deutschen Wagen sind klein.
Not all German cars are small.

In allen grossen Städten finden Sie einige gute Hotels.
In all large cities you'll find a few good hotels.

1. All- is a der-type specifier. In the singular it usually occurs with the endings -es or -em and usually stands alone or is followed only by an adjective. In the plural it occurs both alone and as part of the regular specifier-adjective-noun sequence.
```
## Specifiers and Adjectives, 2 of 3
### Phrases with no endings
Ein paar and was für are fixed phrases, not specifiers. Like the numbers, they never change form.
Ein paar means a few and refers to a plural. An adjective after it has the forms it has with no specifier: ein paar leichte Sommeranzüge.
Was für means what kind of in a question: Mit was für einem Füller schreiben Sie. In an exclamation it means what.
In the singular a form of ein usually follows: Was für ein guter Stoff ist das, an exclamation. In the plural an adjective and a noun follow: Was für schöne und preiswerte Anzüge sind das, an exclamation.
### Etwas and nichts
Etwas means something. Nichts means nothing. Neither is a specifier.
An adjective after them often stands alone and works as a noun. It is usually written with a capital letter: etwas Passendes, nichts Neues.
That adjective has the forms of an adjective that refers to a das-noun.
### Specifier, adjective, noun
Alle, viele, einige, ein paar and was für are easy to confuse. Each one belongs to one of two kinds of sequence.
In the first kind a specifier comes first, then an adjective, then a noun: meine deutschen Bücher, welche deutschen Bücher, alle deutschen Bücher.
In the plural the adjective after a specifier ends in -en.
Was für ein deutsches Buch belongs here, because ein is a specifier. Was für stands outside the sequence.
**160** Hier sind ein paar leichte Sommeranzüge.
Here are a couple of light-weight summer suits.
**161** Ich habe nur ein paar grüne Krawatten.
I only have a couple of green neckties.
**162** Das sind Briefe von ein paar alten Freunden in Deutschland.
Those are letters from a couple of old friends in Germany.
**163** Was für Anzüge sind das, Sommeranzüge?
What kind of suits are those, summer suits?
**164** Was für schöne und preiswerte Anzüge sind das!
What good and inexpensive suits those are!
**165** Was für ein guter Stoff ist das!
What good material that is!
**166** Mit was für einem Füller schreiben Sie?
What kind of a pen are you writing with?
**167** In was für ein Geschäft gehen wir, in ein Herrenkonfektionsgeschäft?
What kind of a store are we going to, a men's ready-made clothing store?
**168** Ich möchte gern etwas Kaltes trinken.
I'd like something cold to drink.
**169** Haben Sie etwas Ähnliches hier?
Do you have something similar here?
**170** Es gibt nichts Neues.
There's nothing new.
**171** Ich habe nichts Bestimmtes vor.
I don't have anything particular planned.
**172** Sind das meine deutschen Bücher?
Are those my German books?
**173** Welche deutschen Bücher sind das?
Which German books are those?
**174** Nicht alle deutschen Bücher sind so teuer.
Not all German books are so expensive.
**175** Was für ein deutsches Buch ist denn das?
What kind of a German book is that?
```
FSI German Basic Course (1961), Unit 8, Notes on Grammar

A. Specifiers and Adjectives

I.2. ein paar and was für are NOT specifiers

Hier sind ein paar leichte Sommeranzüge.
Here are a couple of light-weight summer suits.

Ich habe nur ein paar grüne Krawatten.
I only have a couple of green neckties.

Das sind Briefe von ein paar alten Freunden in Deutschland.
Those are letters from a couple of old friends in Germany.

Was für Anzüge sind das, Sommeranzüge?
What kind of suits are those, summer suits?

Was für schöne und preiswerte Anzüge sind das!
What good and inexpensive suits those are!

Was für ein guter Stoff ist das!
What good material that is!

Mit was für einem Füller schreiben Sie?
What kind of a pen are you writing with?

In was für ein Geschäft gehen wir, in ein Herrenkonfektionsgeschäft?
What kind of a store are we going to, a men's ready-made clothing store?

2. The fixed phrases ein paar and was für are NOT specifiers. They are indeclinable modifiers like the numbers. They are invariable; that is, they have no endings or variations in form. Ein paar has indefinite plural reference, and adjectives following it have the forms of the adjective-noun sequence noted in Unit 7. Was für has both plural and singular reference. In the singular it is usually followed by a form of the specifier ein, in the plural by the adjective-noun sequence. Was für may function both to introduce a question: "What kind of ...?" or to introduce an exclamation: "What ... !"
```
```
A. Specifiers and Adjectives

I.3. etwas and nichts are NOT specifiers

Ich möchte gern etwas Kaltes trinken.
I'd like something cold to drink.

Haben Sie etwas Ähnliches hier?
Do you have something similar here?

Es gibt nichts Neues.
There's nothing new.

Ich habe nichts Bestimmtes vor.
I don't have anything particular planned.

3. The quantity words etwas and nichts likewise are NOT specifiers, and adjectives following them have the forms of the adjective-noun sequence or of the adjective standing alone.

Note that an adjective standing alone after one of these words has indefinite reference, and its forms are those of an adjective referring to a das-noun. The adjective itself functions as a noun, and it is usually capitalized in the writing system.
```
```
A. Specifiers and Adjectives

II.1. Specifier-adjective-noun sequences

Sind das meine deutschen Bücher?
Are those my German books?

Welche deutschen Bücher sind das?
Which German books are those?

Nicht alle deutschen Bücher sind so teuer.
Not all German books are so expensive.

Was für ein deutsches Buch ist denn das?
What kind of a German book is that?

II. Some confusion arises in phrases with alle, viele, einige, ein paar and was für. Here is a summary presentation of specifier-adjective-noun sequences and adjective-noun sequences involving these words.

1. Specifier-adjective-noun sequences:
```
## Specifiers and Adjectives, 3 of 3
### Adjective and noun
In the second kind there is no specifier, only an adjective and a noun. In the plural the adjective ends in -e: deutsche Bücher.
Viele and einige are adjectives, not specifiers. So the next adjective has the same ending: viele deutsche Bücher, einige deutsche Bücher.
Ein paar and was für stand outside the sequence: ein paar deutsche Bücher, was für deutsche Bücher.
Compare alle deutschen Bücher with viele deutsche Bücher.
**176** Sind das deutsche Bücher?
Are those German books?
**177** Hier sind ein paar deutsche Bücher.
Here are a couple of German books.
**178** Was für deutsche Bücher sind denn das?
What kind of German books are those?
**179** Viele deutsche Bücher sind für uns wichtig.
Many German books are important for us.
**180** Einige deutsche Bücher sind sehr teuer.
Some German books are very expensive.
```
FSI German Basic Course (1961), Unit 8, Notes on Grammar

A. Specifiers and Adjectives

II.2. Adjective-noun sequences

Sind das deutsche Bücher?
Are those German books?

Hier sind ein paar deutsche Bücher.
Here are a couple of German books.

Was für deutsche Bücher sind denn das?
What kind of German books are those?

Viele deutsche Bücher sind für uns wichtig.
Many German books are important for us.

Einige deutsche Bücher sind sehr teuer.
Some German books are very expensive.

2. Adjective-noun sequences:

Remember! Alle is a specifier. Viele and einige are adjectives. Ein paar and was für are indeclinable modifiers and not part of the specifier-adjective-noun or adjective-noun sequences.
```
## Adjectives with Dative, 2 of 2
### A phrase with für
English completes such an adjective with a phrase that begins with to or for.
With some adjectives, German can also use a phrase with a preposition: Diese Jacke ist zu klein für mich. Er ist viel zu alt für meine Schwester.
**195** Diese Jacke ist zu klein für mich.
This suit-coat is too small for me.
**196** Er ist viel zu alt für meine Schwester.
He's much too old for my sister.
**197** Die Arbeit ist zu viel für meine Frau.
The work is too much for my wife.
III.a. The prepositional phrase as complement
Diese Jacke ist zu klein für mich.
This suit-coat is too small for me.
Er ist viel zu alt für meine Schwester.
He's much too old for my sister.
Die Arbeit ist zu viel für meine Frau.
The work is too much for my wife.
Note that the adjective is complemented in English by a phrase with a preposition, usually "to" or "for". The prepositional phrase may occur in German as a complement to some adjectives also.
## Word order, 1 of 2
### The verb is second
In a German statement the finite verb is the second element. The first element can be short or long.
It can be a pronoun or a noun alone. It can be a long phrase: Hier im Vorort ist es wirklich viel schöner und ruhiger als in der Stadt.
It can also be a clause. A clause is a group of words with its own subject and verb: Wie ich sehe, haben Sie eine schöne Bibliothek.
German often does not use the English order of subject, verb and object. Wein trinke ich nicht gern puts the object first.
### Where a place sentence begins
An article is the word a or the. Ein is the German a.
The words ein, einige and viele usually do not begin a sentence that tells where something is. The place comes first: Da drüben ist ein Spiegel. Direkt neben der Post ist ein Schreibwarengeschäft.
English also avoids this start. A mirror is over there sounds awkward.
**198** Die finden Sie in allen Preislagen.
You'll find them in all price ranges.
**199** Wein trinke ich nicht gern.
I don't care for wine.
**200** Der neue Schreibtisch passt sehr gut zu Ihren Möbeln.
The new desk matches your furniture very well.
**201** Die Angehörigen meiner Frau leben hier.
My wife's family lives here.
**202** Hier im Vorort ist es wirklich viel schöner und ruhiger als in der Stadt.
It's really much nicer and quieter here in the suburbs than in the city.
**203** In den anderen Zimmern steht schon alles an Ort und Stelle.
Everything's in place in the other rooms.
**204** Den grauen habe ich leider nicht mehr in Ihrer Grösse.
I'm sorry, I don't have the grey one in your size any more.
**205** Wie ich sehe, haben Sie eine schöne Bibliothek.
(As) I see you have a fine library.
**206** Direkt neben der Post ist ein Schreibwarengeschäft.
There's a stationery store right next to the post office.
**207** Da drüben ist ein Spiegel.
There's a mirror over there.
**208** Hier nebenan ist eins.
There's one next door here.
**209** Hier sind noch einige nette Häuser zu vermieten.
There are still some nice houses for rent here.
I. In Unit 3 we observed that the FINITE VERB FORM is the SECOND ELEMENT of a German statement. Here are some more examples illustrating this basic German word order pattern taken from the basic sentences of Units 4 - 8.
Note that the FIRST ELEMENT of these sentences may be as short as a pronoun or a noun alone, or as long as a complete specifier-adjective-noun sequence. It may have the nominative, accusative or dative form. It may be a prepositional phrase or a phrase consisting of a noun or specifier-adjective noun sequence plus another noun or sequence in the genitive form. It may also be a separate clause with its own subject and verb. Notice, too, how often German word order differs from the pattern: Subject-Verb-Object, which is basic in English.
II. The words ein, einige, viele usually do not begin a sentence which gives a location, answering the question "where?". The following examples from the basic sentences illustrate this point.
Notice that English likewise avoids beginning sentences with the indefinite article or the words "some" and "a few". Try re-phrasing the English sentences on the right above so as to begin with "one" or "some" or "a" and notice how awkward and unnatural these sentences sound.
### A phrase in front of a statement
A short statement such as ich glaube, ich höre or ich finde can stand in front of another statement. Its verb is one like finden, fürchten, glauben or sagen.
It is not the first element of the statement after it. The two are separate statements.
Each one has the verb second: Ich glaube, Fräulein Bruce hat eine. Glaube is second in the first statement. Hat is second in the other.
**210** Ich fürchte, das ist telephonisch etwas umständlich.
I'm afraid that's a bit complicated on the telephone.
**211** Ich höre, Sie wollen nach Amerika fahren.
I hear you're planning to go to America.
**212** Ich glaube, Fräulein Bruce hat eine.
I think Miss Bruce has one.
III. THE FINITE VERB FORM is the SECOND ELEMENT also in statements which are preceded by an introductory phrase containing a verb such as finden, fürchten, glauben, sagen. Note the following examples:
These examples actually represent in each case two separate statements. The first statement is thus not an element of the second; in each one separately the basic word order pattern is observed.
## Compound nouns, 1 of 2
### Compound nouns
A compound is one word made of two or more words. English has compound nouns such as newspaper.
English writes some compounds as two words, such as letter-paper. German writes nearly all of them as one word.
German compounds are very common. Some have four or five elements or more.
### The final element decides
The final element of a compound noun is a noun. The elements before it may be a noun, a verb stem, a preposition or an adjective.
The final element decides whether the compound is a der-noun, a das-noun or a die-noun. Das Geschäft gives das Papiergeschäft.
Die Maschine gives die Schreibmaschine. Der Mittag gives der Nachmittag.
### A noun before a noun
Two nouns can make one. Die Bahn and der Hof make der Bahnhof.
Nouns of any class can combine. Der Sport is a der-noun and das Hemd is a das-noun. The result, das Sporthemd, is a das-noun.
The compound also has the same plural as its final element: der Sommeranzug, plural Sommeranzüge.
### A verb stem before a noun
A verb stem can come first. Schreib- is the stem of schreiben. With die Maschine it makes die Schreibmaschine.
Park- from parken and der Platz make der Parkplatz. Schau- from schauen and das Fenster make das Schaufenster.
The final noun still decides the class.
### A preposition before a noun
A preposition can come first. Nach and der Mittag make der Nachmittag. Bei and das Spiel make das Beispiel.
The class still comes from the final noun. Der Umweg and die Unterwäsche are compounds of the same kind.
**215** das Papiergeschäft = das Papier + das Geschäft
the stationery store = the paper + the store
**216** die Schreibmaschine = schreib- + die Maschine
the typewriter = write- + the machine
**217** der Nachmittag = nach + der Mittag
the afternoon = after + the noon
**218** der Neubau = neu + der Bau
the new building = new + the building
**219** der Sommer,- + der Anzug,¨e = der Sommeranzug,¨e
the summer + the suit = the summer suit
**220** das Papier,-e + das Geschäft,-e = das Papiergeschäft,-e
the paper + the store = the stationery store
**221** die Heimat + die Stadt,¨e = die Heimatstadt,¨e
the home + the city = the home town
**222** die Bahn,-en + der Hof,¨e = der Bahnhof,¨e
the railway + the yard = the station
**223** der Sport + das Hemd,-en = das Sporthemd,-en
the sport + the shirt = the soft-collar shirt
**224** das Blei + der Stift,-e = der Bleistift,-e
the lead + the pin = the pencil
**225** park- (parken) + der Platz = der Parkplatz
park- (to park) + the place = the parking lot
**226** schau- (schauen) + das Fenster = das Schaufenster
look- (to look) + the window = the show window
**227** schreib- (schreiben) + die Maschine = die Schreibmaschine
write- (to write) + the machine = the typewriter
**228** nach + der Mittag = der Nachmittag
after + the noon = the afternoon
**229** bei + das Spiel = das Beispiel
by + the play = the example
**230** vor + die Anmeldung = die Voranmeldung
before + the notice = the person-to-person call
```
FSI German Basic Course (1961), Unit 8, Notes on Grammar

D. COMPOUND NOUNS

I

I. English has many compound nouns like newspaper, fireman, outpost, etc., which the writing system treats as single units. We have others like letter-paper, Minute Man, lookout post, after-effect, etc., which, although they are the same sort of compounds, are written as two units, sometimes completely separate and sometimes connected by a hyphen. In German, compound nouns are of very common occurrence and not infrequently contain four or five or even more elements. They are almost all written as single units and hence often look rather formidable. They may turn out to be more difficult than automobileinsurancesalesman, however.
```
```
D. COMPOUND NOUNS

II

das Papiergeschäft = das Papier + das Geschäft
the stationery store = the paper + the store

die Schreibmaschine = schreib- + die Maschine
the typewriter = write- + the machine

der Nachmittag = nach + der Mittag
the afternoon = after + the noon

der Neubau = neu + der Bau
the new building = new + the building

II. Let us examine some typical German compound nouns which we have encountered in the last few units and see what they are composed of:

Notice that the FINAL ELEMENT of each of these words is a noun. This is just like English, as the examples in the paragraph above show. Notice also that each of these compounds is a der-noun, a das-noun or a die-noun according to whether its FINAL ELEMENT is a der-noun, a das-noun or a die-noun. PRECEDING ELEMENTS may be: 1) another NOUN, 2) a PREPOSITION, or 4) an ADJECTIVE. Let us examine these types of compound nouns in turn.
```
```
D. COMPOUND NOUNS

II.1. Compounds made up of NOUN + NOUN

der Sommer,- + der Anzug,¨e = der Sommeranzug,¨e
the summer + the suit = the summer suit

das Papier,-e + das Geschäft,-e = das Papiergeschäft,-e
the paper + the store = the stationery store

die Heimat + die Stadt,¨e = die Heimatstadt,¨e
the home + the city = the home town

die Bahn,-en + der Hof,¨e = der Bahnhof,¨e
the railway + the yard = the station

der Sport + das Hemd,-en = das Sporthemd,-en
the sport + the shirt = the soft-collar shirt

das Blei + der Stift,-e = der Bleistift,-e
the lead + the pin = the pencil

1. Compounds made up of NOUN + NOUN

Notice that das-nouns may combine with der-nouns and die-nouns as well as with das-nouns, and der-nouns may combine with die-nouns and das-nouns as well as with der-nouns, etc., BUT IT IS ALWAYS THE FINAL ELEMENT that determines whether the compound as a whole is a der-noun, a das-noun or a die-noun. A compound noun also has the same plural as its final element. What are the component parts of the following compound nouns? der Autobus, der Stadtplan, das Briefpapier, das Telephonbuch, die Stuhllehne, die Briefmarke.
```
D. COMPOUND NOUNS
II.2. Compounds made up of VERB STEM + NOUN
by + the play = the example
vor + die Anmeldung = die Voranmeldung
before + the notice = the person-to-person call
3. Compounds made up of a PREPOSITION + NOUN
Here are a few more compounds of this type. Although some of them are new you will have no difficulty in recognizing their component parts. der Vorort, der Umweg, das Hinterhaus, die Nebenstrasse, die Unterwäsche, die Zwischenzeit.
```

## Compound nouns, 2 of 2

### An adjective before a noun

An adjective can come first, with no ending.

Neu and der Bau make der Neubau. Fern and das Gespräch make das Ferngespräch. Gross and die Stadt make die Grosstadt.

The final noun decides the class here too.

### Special forms inside a compound

Many nouns and verbs have a special form when they are not the final element. Sometimes it is the plural form.

Staats- comes from der Staat. Etagen- comes from die Etage. Frage- comes from fragen. Elektro- comes from elektrisch.

Bücher- in der Bücherschrank is the plural of das Buch.

### More than two elements

A compound can have more than two elements. Split it from the end.

Das Herrenkonfektionsgeschäft ends in Geschäft, so it is a das-noun. Without Herren, Konfektionsgeschäft remains, which is also a compound.

Der Sommerschlussverkauf splits the same way.

### New compounds

German speakers make new compounds all the time. No dictionary lists them all.

The meaning of a compound is usually the sum of its parts: Geschäftsbrief, Schreibwarengeschäft.

A few do not add up to the English word, such as Fahrstuhl and Vorort. Words of this kind are almost always in the dictionary.

**231** neu + der Bau = der Neubau
new + the building = the new building

**232** fern + das Gespräch = das Ferngespräch
far + the conversation = the long distance call

**233** gross + die Stadt = die Grosstadt
big + the city = the big city

**234** Staats- (der Staat) + der Angehörige = der Staatsangehörige
state- (the state) + the member = the citizen

**235** Wirtschafts- (die Wirtschaft) + die Abteilung = die Wirtschaftsabteilung
economic- (the economy) + the section = the economic section

**236** Etagen- (die Etage) + das Haus = das Etagenhaus
floor- (the floor) + the house = the apartment house

**237** Frage- (fragen) + der Bogen = der Fragebogen
question- (to ask) + the sheet = the questionnaire

**238** Elektro- (elektrisch) + der Herd = der Elektroherd
electro- (electric) + the stove = the electric stove

D. COMPOUND NOUNS

II.4. Compounds made up of an ADJECTIVE + NOUN

neu + der Bau = der Neubau
new + the building = the new building

fern + das Gespräch = das Ferngespräch
far + the conversation = the long distance call

gross + die Stadt = die Grosstadt
big + the city = the big city

4. Compounds made up of an ADJECTIVE + NOUN

The following are a few more examples of this type of compound: der Kühlschrank, das Fernamt, die Kleinstadt.
```
```
D. COMPOUND NOUNS

III

Staats- (der Staat) + der Angehörige = der Staatsangehörige
state- (the state) + the member = the citizen

Wirtschafts- (die Wirtschaft) + die Abteilung = die Wirtschaftsabteilung
economic- (the economy) + the section = the economic section

Etagen- (die Etage) + das Haus = das Etagenhaus
floor- (the floor) + the house = the apartment house

Frage- (fragen) + der Bogen = der Fragebogen
question- (to ask) + the sheet = the questionnaire

Elektro- (elektrisch) + der Herd = der Elektroherd
electro- (electric) + the stove = the electric stove

III. Many nouns and verbs have special forms or plural forms when they occur as non-final elements in compounds. The following compounds contain such special forms:

In the following compounds identify both the special combining form of the first element and the form the element has when not combined. der Bücherschrank, der Küchentisch, der Kassenzettel, das Zigarrengeschäft, das Besuchsvisum, das Konfektionsgeschäft, die Geschäftsreise, die Bilderkiste, die Visa-Abteilung.
```
```
D. COMPOUND NOUNS

IV

IV. As mentioned in paragraph I, German compound nouns frequently have more than two elements. The following examples have occurred in our basic sentences up to this point. Can you break them down into their component elements? das Herrenkonfektionsgeschäft, der Sommerschlussverkauf.
```
```
D. COMPOUND NOUNS

V

V. Compounding is an active process in the language, and you will often hear and see compounds which no dictionary lists. Since the meaning of the whole compound is usually the sum of its parts (cf. Geschäftsbrief, Schreibwarengeschäft), you will usually be able to figure out the meaning of a new compound with little or no difficulty. In a few cases, of course, the English equivalent may not be apparent at all (cf. Fahrstuhl, Vorort), but words of this kind are almost always listed in the dictionary.
