## Notes on Grammar: Forms of the Subjunctive

### Rest: a command with -j-

Pár napig még ne keljen fel. Pihenjen. Stay in bed a few more days and rest.

Pihenjen, 'rest', is a command. The subjunctive is the verb form marked by -j-. Hungarian makes commands with it.

The personal ending follows the -j-. És addig, mit adjak neki? And until then, what shall I give him? Adjak is 'shall I give'.

### When the -j- changes

Most nyissa ki a száját. Now open your mouth. Nyissa comes from nyitni, but it has no j.

The j has changed by assimilation: a sound changes to match the sound next to it. After s, sz, z and dz, the j becomes that consonant: olvass-, ússz-, nézz-, eddz-.

After t, the result is ss when a short vowel comes before the t: nyissa, köss-. After a long vowel, or a consonant other than s or sz, it is ts: taníts-, tölts-. Lát and bocsát take ss: láss-.

### Definite, indefinite and irregular

Vizsgálja meg! Examine him. The subjunctive has indefinite and definite forms: írjak, írjam.

The second person singular has a short form and a long one: írj, írjál, írd, írjad.

A few verbs are irregular: egyek, igyak, vegyek, vigyek, legyek, higgyek. Beside jöjj there is gyere.

The tables show what -j- becomes after each stem ending, then the forms of regular verbs, of jöjjek and menjek, and of the irregular verbs.

The forms corresponding to the English imperative (such as 'go!', 'wash yourself!') are one use of the Hungarian subjunctive (as it is traditionally called). As the above forms illustrate, -j- is a characteristic sign of the subjunctive. This -j- is, however, assimilated after a sibilant or t. Accordingly, note in the table below that when the stem of the verb ends in a sibilant or t, and when j is added, the following assimilations take place:

## Notes on Grammar: Uses of the Subjunctive

### Let's, may, should

Most mérjük meg a lázat. Let's take your temperature now.

In a main clause the subjunctive is mostly a command. It also says 'let's' and 'may': Együnk, let's eat. Isten áldja meg, may God bless you.

It states what should be done: Tízkor legyen ott. You should be there at ten. This use is most common in questions. Elhívjam a körzeti orvost? Should I call the district doctor?

### After hogy

Fontos, hogy mielőbb a kórházba menjen. It's important for him to go to the hospital as soon as possible.

In a clause with hogy, the subjunctive follows verbs of command, wish and forbidding. It also follows phrases of possibility, importance and necessity: Lehetetlen, hogy megtanuljam. It's impossible for me to learn it.

Hogy with the subjunctive also states a purpose, 'so that': Most nyissa ki a száját, hogy megnézzem a torkát. Now open your mouth so that I can examine your throat.

### I want him to go

Azt akarom, hogy menjen. I want him to go.

English uses an infinitive with its own subject: him to go. Hungarian uses a hogy clause with the subjunctive.

When the subject of both verbs is the same, Hungarian has the infinitive, as English does. Menni akar. He wants to go.

**111** Kérem, hogy nézze meg.
I want you to see it.

**112** Lehetetlen, hogy megtanuljam.
It's impossible for me to learn it.

**113** Nem engedi meg, hogy elmenjek.
He won't let me go.

**114** Azért eszünk, hogy éljünk.
We eat so that we may live.

**115** Hallgasson, hogy a gyerek tanulhasson.
Be quiet so that the child can study.

**116** Azért dolgozik, hogy a családját eltartsa.
He works in order to support his family.

**117** Azt akarom, hogy menjen.
I want him to go.

**118** Mondták, hogy nézzük meg.
They told us to see it.

**119** Menni akar.
He wants to go.

```
B. Uses of the Subjunctive
The subjunctive in Hungarian may be used in both independent and dependent clauses. In independent clauses it is limited mostly to the imperative usage, but may be employed as in English to include patterns such as Isten áldja meg 'May God bless you' Nyugodjon békében 'May he rest in peace' and Csak essen 'Let the rain come down' Együnk 'Let's eat'.
It is also frequently used to express obligation, indefiniteness, and uncertainty, Tízkor legyen ott 'You should be there at ten'. This usage occurs most commonly in the interrogative Oda menjek holnap? 'Shall I go there tomorrow?' Eljöjjön? 'Should he come?'.
In dependent noun clauses (those introduced by the word hogy) the subjunctive is used after verbs indicating command, wish, and forbidding, and after impersonal expressions indicating possibility, importance and necessity. It is also used in purpose clauses, that is, when hogy denotes 'in order that', 'so that':
Kérem, hogy nézze meg.  I want you to see it.
Lehetetlen, hogy megtanuljam.  It's impossible for me to learn it.
Nem engedi meg, hogy elmenjek.  He won't let me go.
Azért eszünk, hogy éljünk.  We eat so that we may live.
Hallgasson, hogy a gyerek tanulhasson.  Be quiet so that the child can study.
Azért dolgozik, hogy a családját eltartsa.  He works in order to support his family.
Note in the sentences below that the English infinitive constructions, where the subject of the infinitive is not the same as the subject of the sentence, correspond to a subordinate clause in Hungarian:
Azt akarom, hogy menjen.  I want him to go.
Mondták, hogy nézzük meg.  They told us to see it.
But:
Menni akar.  He wants to go.
```

## Notes on Grammar: The Negative of the Subjunctive

### Ne, not nem

Ne ijedjen meg. Don't get frightened.

Before a subjunctive the negative is always ne or se, never nem or sem.

Ne beszéljenek angolul. Don't speak English. Maga se menjen el. Don't you go either. Vigyázzon, hogy el ne essen. Be careful not to fall.

**120** Maga se menjen el.
Don't you go either.

**121** Vigyázzon, hogy el ne essen.
Be careful not to fall.

**122** Ne beszéljenek angolul.

**123** Senki se ugorjon le a villamosról.

C. The Negative of the Subjunctive

Maga se menjen el. Don't you go either.
Vigyázzon, hogy el ne essen. Be careful not to fall.
Ne beszéljenek angolul. Don't speak English.
Senki se ugorjon le a villamosról. Don't anybody jump off the streetcar.

As the above sentences indicate, the negative before a subjunctive form is always ne or se (never nem or sem).

## Notes on Grammar: Verb Prefix Position in the Imperative Use of the Subjunctive and Sequence of Tenses with the Subjunctive

### Sit up: the prefix after the verb

Üljön fel és vegye le a pizsama kabátot. Sit up and take your pajama top off.

In an ordinary command, the prefix follows the verb: üljön fel, vegye le. This is the most common order.

In the negative, ne or se comes first, then the verb, then the prefix. Ne álljon fel! Don't get up.

### A stressed command: the prefix first

Megállj! Stop. When the verb or its prefix is stressed, the prefix comes first and is written as one word with the verb.

In a stressed negative the order is prefix, ne, verb. Meg ne állj! Don't stop. El ne menj innen! Don't go away from here.

The table pairs each command with its negative. The last three rows are in the stressed order.

### Verb Prefix Position in the Imperative Use of the Subjunctive

### Only a present tense

Azt mondja, hogy menjek el. He tells me to go. Azt mondta, hogy menjek el. He told me to go.

The subjunctive has only a present tense. After a past verb, as after a present one, it stays the same: menjek.

**124** Azt mondja, hogy menjek el.
He tells me to go.

**125** Azt mondta, hogy menjek el.
He told me to go.

```
D. Verb Prefix Position in the Imperative Use of the Subjunctive
Word order in the imperative of prefixed verbs depends on the degree of emphasis. If the command is not a strong one, the affirmative imperative consists of the main part of the verb followed by the prefix; the negative consists of ne (or se) plus main part of verb plus prefix. (This is the order most commonly used.) However, when the verb or its prefix is stressed, in the affirmative imperative the prefix precedes the main part of the verb (and in the written form combines with it to form a single word); in the emphatic negative imperative, the word order is: prefix plus ne (or se) plus main part of verb.
 |
Álljon fel! | Ne álljon fel!
Üljenek le! | Ne üljenek le!
Várjanak meg! | Ne várjanak meg!
Megállj! | Meg ne állj!
Elmenj innen! | El ne menj innen!
Megkérdezze, hogy jön-e. | Meg ne kérdezze, hogy jön-e.
```

```
E. Sequence of Tenses with the Subjunctive
Since the subjunctive in Hungarian is limited in form to the present tense, there is no problem concerning sequence of tenses: where a subjunctive form is called for, it will necessarily be in the present tense:
Azt mondja, hogy menjek el.  He tells me to go.
Azt mondta, hogy menjek el.  He told me to go.
```

## Notes on Grammar: Hungarian Constructions Corresponding to English 'Let'
