## Notes on Grammar: Position of the Direct Object in a Sentence

### The object before or after the verb

Kérek egy bélyeget. I want a stamp. Képet rajzol. He's drawing a picture.

In a positive sentence the object can come before the verb or after it. After the verb, it generally has egy. Before the verb, egy may be left out.

### In a negative sentence the object follows

Nem írok levelet. I'm not writing a letter. Nem olvasunk könyvet. We're not reading a book.

In a negative sentence nem stands right before the verb, and the object always comes after the verb. The object has no egy.

**127** Kérek egy bélyeget.
I want a stamp.

**128** Találnak egy levelet.
They find a letter.

**129** Képet rajzol.
He's drawing a picture.

**130** Nem írok levelet.
I'm not writing a letter.

**131** Nem olvasunk könyvet.
We're not reading a book.

```
A. Position of the Direct Object in a Sentence
Kérek egy bélyeget.  I want a stamp.
Találnak egy levelet.  They find a letter.
Képet rajzol.  He's drawing a picture.
Note in the above examples that in an affirmative sentence the direct object may come either before or after the verb. When it is placed before the verb, the indefinite article may be omitted. When the object follows the verb, the indefinite article is generally used.
Nem írok levelet.  I'm not writing a letter.
Nem olvasunk könyvet.  We're not reading a book.
In negative sentences like the two above, the position of the direct object is always after the verb and nem is placed immediately before the verb. Note that the indefinite article is omitted in this pattern.
```

## Notes on Grammar: Use and Agreement of Adjectives

### An adjective before a noun never changes

Piros cipőt akar venni. She wants to buy red shoes. Cipőt takes the -t. Piros stays as it is.

An adjective before its noun keeps one form, as in English. Ez and az, 'this' and 'that', are the exception. They agree with the noun in number and case: Ezek a tányérok nagyon drágák. These plates are very expensive.

### A predicate adjective agrees in number

Ezek az ágyak alacsonyak. These beds are low. The subject is plural, so the predicate adjective takes the plural -k too.

Az a két ceruza piros. Those two pencils are red. Ceruza is singular after a number, so piros stays singular.

### An adjective can stand for its noun

Piros rózsákat vesz? Nem, fehéreket. Is he buying red roses? No, white ones.

Fehéreket stands for 'white roses'. An adjective used in place of its noun takes the number of that noun. It takes the case of its own job in the sentence: here, the object.

**132** Ismerek egy magyar urat.
I know a Hungarian gentleman.

**133** Piros cipőt akar venni.
She wants to buy red shoes.

**134** Ezek az angol lányok.
These are the English girls.

**135** Az a két ceruza piros.
Those two pencils are red.

**136** Ezek az ágyak alacsonyak.
These beds are low.

**137** A tanulók magyarok.
The students are Hungarian.

**138** Meleg teát akar? Nem, hideget.
Do you want hot tea? No, cold.

**139** Piros rózsákat vesz? Nem, fehéreket.
Is he buying red roses? No, white ones.

**140** Angol anyagot vásárol? Nem, amerikait.
Is he shopping for English material? No, American.

**141** Itt vannak a jók?
Are the good ones here?

```
B. Use and Agreement of Adjectives
Adjectives (for example: jó - 'good', tiszta - 'clean', piszkos - 'dirty', éhes - 'hungry', meleg - 'warm', hideg - 'cold',) have the following general functions in Hungarian:
1. Attributes, which correspond to the English limiting and descriptive adjectives placed before the noun they modify.
2. Predicates, which correspond to predicate adjectives in English.
3. Substantives (with noun to which they refer not expressed).
When used as an attribute, the adjective in Hungarian is invariable, as in English, with the exception of the demonstrative adjective ('this', 'that'), which must agree in number and case with the noun it modifies:
Ismerek egy magyar urat.  I know a Hungarian gentleman.
Piros cipőt akar venni.  She wants to buy red shoes.
Ezek az angol lányok.  These are the English girls.
When used as a predicate, the adjective will always agree in number with the subject:
Az a két ceruza piros.  Those two pencils are red.
Ezek az ágyak alacsonyak.  These beds are low.
A tanulók magyarok.  The students are Hungarian.
When used as a substantive, its number will be determined by the noun that it describes, and its case will depend on the way it is used in the sentence:
Meleg teát akar? Nem, hideget.  Do you want hot tea? No, cold.
Piros rózsákat vesz? Nem, fehéreket.  Is he buying red roses? No, white ones.
Angol anyagot vásárol? Nem, amerikait.  Is he shopping for English material? No, American.
Itt vannak a jók?  Are the good ones here?
```

## Notes on Grammar: Nominative and Accusative Forms of Adjectives

### Adjectives take -t with a linking vowel

Nem talál pirosat, csak sárgát. She can't find a red one but only a yellow one.

An adjective ending in a vowel takes -t as a noun does, and final a becomes á: sárgát. An adjective ending in a consonant generally takes a linking vowel, even after s: pirosat.

The linking vowel is usually a after back vowels, e after front vowels: meleget. Some take o: nagyot. A few take none: magyart, angolt.

### Plural adjectives

A poharak piszkosak. The glasses are dirty. Éhesek vagyunk. We're hungry.

An adjective forms its plural as a noun does. Where it needs a linking vowel, it is generally a or e: piszkosak, éhesek. Most adjectives ending in i, ú or ű take one too: amerikaiak, egyszerűek.

The plural object adds a or e and -t to the plural: Szürkéket akar, nem barnákat. He wants grey ones, not brown ones.

**142** Nem talál pirosat, csak sárgát.
She can't find a red one but only a yellow one.

**143** Hideg teát kérek, nem meleget.
I want cold tea, not hot.

**144** A nagyot megveszem.
I'll buy the large one.

**145** Éhesek vagyunk.
We're hungry.

**146** A poharak piszkosak.
The glasses are dirty.

**147** A szobák egyszerűek.
The rooms are plain.

**148** A lányok amerikaiak.
The girls are American.

**149** Egyszerűeket kérünk.
We want simple ones.

**150** Szürkéket akar, nem barnákat.
He wants grey ones, not brown ones.

**151** A nagyokat megveszem.
I'll buy the big ones.

```
C. Nominative and Accusative Forms of Adjectives
The accusative singular of adjectives ending in a vowel is formed in the same way as that of nouns ending in a vowel (that is, -a, -e become -á, -é). Adjectives ending in a consonant generally have a vowel is usually -a- (after back vowels) or -e- (after front vowels) -o- is occasionally found after back vowels as in nagyot. A few words have no vowel, as magyart, angolt.
Nem talál pirosat, csak sárgát.  She can't find a red one but only a yellow one.
Hideg teát kérek, nem meleget.  I want cold tea, not hot.
A nagyot megveszem.  I'll buy the large one.
The nominative plural of adjectives is formed in the same way as that of nouns. However, where a linking vowel is necessary, generally it will be -a- or -e- before the -k. Most adjectives whose basic forms end in i, ú or ű require the auxiliary vowel -a- or -e- before the plural suffix:
Éhesek vagyunk.  We're hungry.
A poharak piszkosak.  The glasses are dirty.
A szobák egyszerűek.  The rooms are plain.
A lányok amerikaiak.  The girls are American.
The accusative plural of adjectives is formed by adding -a- or -e- plus -t to the plural nominative form:
Egyszerűeket kérünk.  We want simple ones.
Szürkéket akar, nem barnákat.  He wants grey ones, not brown ones.
A nagyokat megveszem.  I'll buy the big ones.
```

## Notes on Grammar: Position of the Predicate Adjective in a Sentence

### Where the adjective stands with vagyok

Én beteg vagyok. I'm sick. With a first person subject, the adjective comes before the verb.

Ki? Who? Én vagyok beteg. I am sick. In the answer to ki or kik, the subject is the stressed word. It stands before the verb, and the adjective moves after it.

Nem vagyok fáradt. I'm not tired. In a negative sentence nem stands before the verb, and the adjective always comes after it.

**152** (Én) beteg vagyok. Ki?
I'm sick. Who?

**153** Én vagyok beteg.
I am sick.

**154** (Mi) éhesek vagyunk. Kik?
We're hungry. Who?

**155** Mi vagyunk éhesek.
We are hungry.

**156** (Én) nem vagyok fáradt.
I'm not tired.

**157** (Mi) nem vagyunk kövérek.
We're not fat.

**158** (Én) nem vagyok éhes.
I'm not hungry.

**159** (Én) nem vagyok nagy?
Am I not big?

```
D. Position of the Predicate Adjective in a Sentence
(Én) beteg vagyok. Ki?  I'm sick. Who?
Én vagyok beteg.  I am sick.
(Mi) éhesek vagyunk. Kik?  We're hungry. Who?
Mi vagyunk éhesek.  We are hungry.
As shown in the above sentences, the position of a predicate adjective in an affirmative sentence with subject in the first person is before the verb. However, an answer to the question 'Who?' (ki, kik?), where the subject is emphasized, will require the predicate adjective to be placed after the verb.
(Én) nem vagyok fáradt.  I'm not tired.
(Mi) nem vagyunk kövérek.  We're not fat.
(Én) nem vagyok éhes.  I'm not hungry.
(Én) nem vagyok nagy?  Am I not big?
In a negative sentence like the examples above, the predicate adjective likewise always comes after the verb.
```

## Notes on Grammar: Interrogative Form of an Equational Sentence

### Two orders for a question

A szálloda tiszta? Tiszta a szálloda? Both mean 'Is the hotel clean'.

A szálloda tiszta is an equational sentence: a subject and an adjective or noun that describes it, with no verb.

As a question it has two orders. One keeps the subject first. The other puts the adjective first, and Hungarian prefers this one. Either way the adjective agrees with the subject. Hidegek az esték? Are the evenings cold?

**160** 1. A szálloda tiszta?
Is the hotel clean?

**161** 2. Tiszta a szálloda?
2. Is the hotel clean?

**162** 1. Az esték hidegek?
Are the evenings cold?

**163** 2. Hidegek az esték?
2. Are the evenings cold?

**164** 1. A kávé meleg?
Is the coffee hot?

**165** 2. Meleg a kávé?
2. Is the coffee hot?

**166** 1. A fiúk jók?
Are the boys good?

**167** 2. Jók a fiúk?
2. Are the boys good?

```
E. Interrogative Form of an Equational Sentence
1. A szálloda tiszta?  Is the hotel clean?
2. Tiszta a szálloda?
1. Az esték hidegek?  Are the evenings cold?
2. Hidegek az esték?
1. A kávé meleg?  Is the coffee hot?
2. Meleg a kávé?
1. A fiúk jók?  Are the boys good?
2. Jók a fiúk?
As illustrated in the above examples, Hungarian employs two patterns for the question form of an equational sentence: (1) the usual declarative word order (subject plus predicate adjective), and (2) inverted order (predicate adjective plus subject). Although there may be no difference in the meaning of the two patterns, Hungarian prefers the form requiring the adjective before the noun. (Note that as a predicate the adjective is inflected regardless of whether it comes after the noun or before it.)
## Notes on Grammar: The Present Tense of Lenni and Hol - itt - ott; hova - ide - oda
### The verb to be
Éhesek vagyunk. We're hungry. Vagyunk is a form of lenni, 'to be' or 'to become'.
The table gives its six present forms. Maga and ő share one form, van. Maguk and ők share vannak.
### The Present Tense of Lenni, 1 of 2
### The Present Tense of Lenni, 2 of 2
### Where at and where to
Hol van a szálloda? Where's the hotel? Hova megy? Where are you going?
Hol asks at what place. Hova asks to what place. Itt and ott, 'here' and 'there', answer hol. Ide and oda, 'here' and 'there', answer hova.
Hova, ide and oda go with a verb of motion from one place to another. Hol, itt and ott go with a verb of no motion, or motion within one place.
The table pairs each word of place with its word of direction.
### Hol - itt - ott; hova - ide - oda, 1 of 2
### Hol - itt - ott; hova - ide - oda, 2 of 2
**168** Hol van a szálloda?
Where's the hotel?
**169** Johnson úr itt van.
```
F. The Present Tense of Lenni ('To Be', 'To Become')

(Én) | vagyok | (Mi) | vagyunk
(Te) | vagy | (Ti) | vagytok
(Maga) | van | (Maguk) | vannak
(Ő) | van | (Ők) | vannak
```
```
G. Hol - itt - ott; hova - ide - oda

Hol van a szálloda? Where's the hotel?
Johnson úr itt van. Mr. Johnson's here.
Ott van jobbra a vendéglő. The restaurant's there to the right.
Hova megy? Where are you going?
Ide akar jönni? Do you want to come here?
Jövő héten oda megy. He's going there next week.

The underlined words in all the sentences above have one thing in common: they all have something to do with location or place. The distinction between hol - itt - ott and hova - ide - oda is that the first set always refers to location or place at or in which, whereas the set hova - ide - oda always indicates place or location to which:

hol : where | (at, in, what place) | hova : where | (to what place, 'whither')
itt : here | (in this place) | ide : here | (to this place, 'hither')
ott : there | (in that place) | oda : there | (to that place, 'thither')

Keep in mind that a word from the set hova - ide - oda is used with a verb indicating motion or movement from one place to another, whereas a word from the group hol - itt - ott is used when the verb does not indicate motion or when the movement is confined within a specified place or location.
