## Notes on Grammar: The Suffixes -ban, -ben and -ba, -be

### In and into are suffixes

Mi van a bőröndben? What's in the suitcase? Menjünk az ebédlőbe. Let's go to the dining room.

English says 'in' and 'into' with separate words. Hungarian adds a suffix to the noun. -ban or -ben means 'in', the place where a thing is. -ba or -be means 'to' or 'into', with a verb of motion.

Vowel harmony chooses between -ban and -ben: a bőröndben, a folyóban, in the river.

### Final a and e become long

Milyen gyönyörű rózsák vannak a vázában! What beautiful roses there are in the vase!

The suffix goes on the nominative. A final a or e becomes á or é first: váza, vázában.

In the plural the suffix goes on the plural form: Mindennap friss virágot teszek a vázákba. I put fresh flowers in the vases every day.

### In the city, into the city

Autóbuszok járnak a városban. There are buses moving in the city. Autóbuszok járnak a városba. There are buses moving into the city.

-ban or -ben means inside a space. The verb usually shows no motion. Where it does, the motion stays inside the space.

-ba or -be means motion from outside a space to its inside: Bécsbe megy. He's going to Vienna.

**105** Mi van a bőröndben?
What's in the suitcase?

**106** Az Állami Áruházban elég jó ruhák vannak.
In the State Store there are some fairly good suits.

**107** Nagyon szeretnek halászni a folyóban.
They like to fish a lot in the river.

**108** Mi újság az Egyesült Államokban?
What's the latest in the United States?

**109** Szoktak kirándulni a hegyekbe?
Do you usually go on hikes to the mountains?

**110** A fiú az angol elemibe jár.
The boy goes to the English grammar school.

**111** Menjünk az ebédlőbe.
Let's go to the dining room.

**112** Friss rózsákat teszek a vázákba.
I put fresh roses in the vases.

**113** A tanulók a vendéglőben vannak.
The students are in the restaurant.

**114** Autóbuszok járnak a városban.
There are buses moving in the city.

**115** Bécsbe megy.
He's going to Vienna.

**116** Autóbuszok járnak a városba.
There are buses moving into the city.

```
A. The Suffixes -ban, -ben and -ba, -be
We have already seen how Hungarian expresses many grammatical concepts, for example, person, number and case, by the addition of suffixes to a single root or stem. This pattern of structure, which seems strange to English speakers, is found in many other languages. In this unit we are concerned with two additional sets of suffixes which indicate structural relationships which are expressed in English by separate words. The examples below show how Hungarian and English differ in expressing the concept represented in English by the words 'in', 'into' and 'to':
Mi van a bőröndben?  What's in the suitcase?
Az Állami Áruházban elég jó ruhák vannak.  In the State Store there are some fairly good suits.
Nagyon szeretnek halászni a folyóban.  They like to fish a lot in the river.
Mi újság az Egyesült Államokban?  What's the latest in the United States?
Szoktak kirándulni a hegyekbe?  Do you usually go on hikes to the mountains?
A fiú az angol elemibe jár.  The boy goes to the English grammar school.
Menjünk az ebédlőbe.  Let's go to the dining room.
Friss rózsákat teszek a vázákba.  I put fresh roses in the vases.
Note that in these sentences -ban (or -ben) corresponds to English 'in' and -ba or -be to English 'to' or 'into'. That is, -ban (-ben) indicates 'in' (showing place where), while -ba (-be) with verbs of motion indicate movement 'into' a place or area.
The suffixes -ba or -be and -ban or -ben are added to the "basic form" of the noun except when that form ends in -a or -e, in which case these vowel sounds are lengthened into á or é before the suffix.
For the plural the -ban, -ben, and the -ba, -be suffixes are added to the plural basic form, the formation of which is outlined in Unit 3.
The drawing below illustrates the distinction in meaning between -ban, -ben and -ba, -be:
-Ban, -ben means 'in, within, inside' an enclosure or space. The verb of the statement in which it is used usually does not indicate motion; however, if it does, the motion is confined within the area as defined by the suffixed noun:
A tanulók a vendéglőben vannak.  The students are in the restaurant.
Autóbuszok járnak a városban.  There are buses moving in the city.
-Ba, -be means 'to, into'. It is generally used in conjunction with a verb expressing motion from outside to the inside of or into an area or enclosure:
Bécsbe megy.  He's going to Vienna.
Autóbuszok járnak a városba.  There are buses moving into the city.
```

## Notes on Grammar: The Present Tense of Some Irregular Verbs and How to Say 'Is Not' and 'Are Not' in Hungarian

### Six verbs with irregular stems

Köszönöm szépen, én nem iszom semmit. Thank you very much, but I don't drink anything. És maga, Johnson úr? Mit iszik? And you, Mr. Johnson? What will you have?

Iszom and iszik belong to inni, 'to drink'. Their stem does not look like the infinitive. These verbs are irregular mainly in their stems. Their endings mostly follow the usual pattern.

The table gives enni, menni, venni, inni, vinni and jönni in all six persons. In the plural, every ending is regular: eszünk, esztek, esznek.

### The Present Tense of Some Irregular Verbs, 1 of 3

### The Present Tense of Some Irregular Verbs, 2 of 3

### The Present Tense of Some Irregular Verbs, 3 of 3

### Nincs is the negative of van

A gyerek nincs az iskolában. The child isn't in school. Nincs kert a városban. There's no garden in the city.

The negative of van is nincs or nincsen. The negative of vannak is nincsenek: Kovácsék nincsenek az ebédlőben. The Smiths aren't in the dining room.

### Every other negative takes nem

Nem vagyunk éhesek. We're not hungry. The other forms of lenni take nem before the verb, as any verb does.

An equational sentence has no verb, so nem alone makes it negative: A konyha nem elég modern. The kitchen isn't modern enough.

**117** A gyerek nincs az iskolában.
The child isn't in school.

**118** Nincs kert a városban.
There's no garden in the city.

**119** Kovácsék nincsenek az ebédlőben.
The Smiths aren't in the dining room.

**120** Nincsenek szép virágok a vázákban.
There aren't any beautiful flowers in the vases.

**121** Nem vagyunk éhesek.
We're not hungry.

**122** A konyha nem elég modern.
The kitchen isn't modern enough.

**123** Az urak nem tanulók.
The gentlemen are not students.

```
B. The Present Tense of Some Irregular Verbs
Note that the main irregularities of the verbs below occur in their stems. The personal endings for the most part follow a pattern, and are entirely regular in the plural.
ENNI | MENNI | VENNI | INNI | VINNI | JÖNNI
eszem (eszek) | megyek | veszek | iszom (iszok) | viszek | jövök
eszel | mész (mégy) | veszel | iszol | viszel | jössz
eszik | megy | vesz | iszik | visz | jön
eszünk | megyünk | veszünk | iszunk | viszünk | jövünk
esztek | mentek | vesztek | isztok | visztek | jöttök
esznek | mennek | vesznek | isznak | visznek | jönnek
```

```
C. How to Say 'Is Not' and 'Are Not' in Hungarian
A gyerek nincs az iskolában.  The child isn't in school.
Nincs kert a városban.  There's no garden in the city.
Kovácsék nincsenek az ebédlőben.  The Smiths aren't in the dining room.
Nincsenek szép virágok a vázákban.  There aren't any beautiful flowers in the vases.
Nem vagyunk éhesek.  We're not hungry.
A konyha nem elég modern.  The kitchen isn't modern enough.
Az urak nem tanulók.  The gentlemen are not students.
As seen in the sentences above, the negative forms corresponding to van and vannak are nincs (or nincsen) and nincsenek respectively. For all other persons of lenni ('to be') the usual rule for the formation of the negative applies: nem before the verb. (However, keep in mind that in an equational sentence where there is no verb, the negative is expressed by nem alone.)
```

## Substitution Drill

### A word for behind that follows its noun

A ház mögött nagy kert van. Behind the house there is a big garden.

Mögött means 'behind'. English puts 'behind' before its noun, as a preposition. Mögött comes after its noun: a ház mögött.

A word that does the work of an English preposition but follows its noun is a postposition. The noun before it stays in the nominative: ház.

### Home and at home

Haza megy? Are you going home? Otthon vannak. They're at home.

Haza and otthon both mean 'home'. They differ as oda and ott do. Haza goes with motion, stated or implied. Otthon means at home, with no motion.

What's in the box?

D. The Concept of Postpositions: Mögött

Note that in the sentence, A ház mögött kert van, the word mögött has the same use as the English word 'behind'. Since the word 'behind' comes before the word to which it relates, it is classified as a 'preposition'. Because the Hungarian word mögött comes after the noun to which it relates, it is called a 'postposition'. In Hungarian the 'object' of a postposition is in the basic form. The general concept of the postposition in Hungarian will be analyzed in a subsequent unit.

E. Distinction Between Haza and Otthon

Besides its common meaning of 'fatherland', 'native country', haza also has the connotation of 'to one's own home or residence'. It is distinguished in use from otthon (which also means 'home'), in the same way as ott differs from oda: haza is used only where motion is expressed or implied; otherwise otthon is required: Haza megy? 'Are you going home?'; otthon vannak 'they're at home.'
