## Notes on Grammar: The Possessive in Hungarian

### My is an ending on the noun

Az édesanyám is jól van. My mother is well also. Messze van a hivatala? Is her office far?

Hungarian has no words for 'my', 'his' or 'their', and no 's. It adds a suffix to the noun for the thing owned: -m for 'my', -d for 'your' said to te, -nk for 'our'.

The form for 'his' or 'her', hivatala, also means 'your' said to maga. Itthon van a kedves nővére? Is your dear sister at home? The form for 'their' also means 'your' said to more than one.

### The stem is the stem of the plural

After a vowel, -m, -d and -nk go straight on. Final a and e become á and é: ceruza, ceruzám, ceruzánk.

After a consonant, a linking vowel comes first: kabátom, házam, kertem. It is the same vowel the plural takes before -k. Before 'our' the ending is -unk or -ünk: kabátunk, kertünk.

A stem that changes before -t or -k changes the same way here: név, nevek, nevem, and ló, lovak, lovam.

### His and their, with j or without

After a vowel, his is -ja or -je and their is -juk or -jük: ceruzája, ceruzájuk. After j, gy, ly, ny, c, cs, s, sz, z or zs there is no j: kése, hegye.

After other consonants there is no easy way to know: kertje, but asztala. Their has j when his has j. Apa and anya drop the a before j: apja, anyja.

The table gives sixteen nouns with every possessive ending. The his column shows which nouns take j.

A. The Possessive in Hungarian

Possession in English is expressed by such words as 'my', 'your', 'his', 'her', 'our', and 'their', or by the use of the apostrophe with s after a noun. Hungarian has no forms corresponding to the above English ways of expressing possession. Instead possession is shown by suffixes added to the stem of the noun indicating the person or thing possessed. The following table gives the forms of the possessive for singular nouns in all persons.

Singular Possessive Forms in Hungarian
 | My | Thy | His, Her, Its, Your | Our | Your (familiar) | Their, Your
ceruza | ceruzám | ceruzád | ceruzája | ceruzánk | ceruzátok | ceruzájuk
kefe | kefém | keféd | keféje | kefénk | kefétek | keféjük
cipő | cipőm | cipőd | cipője | cipőnk | cipőtök | cipőjük
kocsi | kocsim | kocsid | kocsija | kocsink | kocsitok | kocsijuk
kés | késem | késed | kése | késünk | késetek | késük
kert | kertem | kerted | kertje | kertünk | kertetek | kertjük
ing | ingem | inged | inge | ingünk | ingetek | ingük
kabát | kabátom | kabátod | kabátja | kabátunk | kabátotok | kabátjuk
asztal | asztalom | asztalod | asztala | asztalunk | asztalotok | asztaluk
ház | házam | házad | háza | házunk | házatok | házuk
szűcs | szűcsöm | szűcsöd | szűcse | szűcsünk | szűcsötök | szűcsük
hegy | hegyem | hegyed | hegye | hegyünk | hegyetek | hegyük
tó | tavam | tavad | tava | tavunk | tavatok | tavuk
mű | művem | műved | műve | művünk | művetek | művük
kéz | kezem | kezed | keze | kezünk | kezetek | kezük
tükör | tükröm | tükröd | tükre | tükrünk | tükrötök | tükrük

Note from the above examples that the stem together with the auxilary vowel preceding the possessive ending is exactly the same as that used before the plural ending -k. Note also that the auxiliary vowel preceding the possessive -m ('my'), -d ('thy'), and -tok (plural familiar 'your') is identical for these three forms. As the chart shows, the first person plural 'our' is expressed by adding -nk to a noun stem that ends in a vowel (with lengthening of a to á and e to é) and -unk or -ünk to a stem ending in a consonant.

The third person his (her, its) and their end in -ja (-je) and -juk (-jük) respectively for regular nouns whose stem ends in a vowel (again with modification of a to á and e to é for those stems that end in these vowels). For those noun stems ending in the sounds represented in traditional Hungarian spelling by j, gy, ly, ny, c, cs, s, sz, z, and zs, the third person possessive singular and plural lacks -j-. For words ending in any other consonant sound, there is no easy way of knowing whether -j- will occur in the suffix. Most monosyllabic words that end in g, l, m, n and r require -j-, and most words of more than one syllable ending in b, d, f, k, p and t also require -j-. But since there are many exceptions to most of these rules, the student must memorize the particular form when he comes across it. Therefore, as a help to the student, beginning with this unit, the third person singular possessive suffix will be given with the basic form in the build-ups for the following types of substantives:

(1) All words ending in a vowel that do not require -j- in the possessive.

(2) All words ending in a consonant other than j, gy, ly, ny, c, cs, s, sz, z, and zs.

(3) All words that undergo a change in the stem when a suffix is added.

(4) Nouns that are used with both endings.

Nouns that fall into one of the above four categories and that have been included in the first six units are listed with their third person possessive in an appendix to this unit.

The student will keep in mind that the third person plural possessive will contain or lack a -j- in accordance with whether it is included or not in the corresponding third person singular.

Remember also that whenever there is a change in the stem with the addition of the accusative -t or plural -k that same change will occur in all of the possessive forms; for example:

név - nevet - nevek - nevem - neve - nevük
ló - lovat - lovak - lovam - lova - lovunk
bokor - bokrot - bokrok - bokrunk - bokra

Some substantives have irregular forms in the possessive. Note the following used in this unit:

apa - apám, apád, apánk, apátok. BUT apja, apjuk
anya - anyám, anyád, anyánk, anyátok. BUT anyja, anyjuk
bátya - bátyám, bátyád, bátyánk, bátyátok. BUT bátyja, bátyjuk

(These three nouns of personal relationship lose their final vowel before the -j- preceding the third person suffixes.)

fiú - fiam, fiad, fiunk, fiatok, fia, fiuk
öccs - öcsém, öcséd, öcsénk, öcsétek, öccse, öccsük

(The basic form öccs is not generally used except in some compounds, such as unokaöccs, 'nephew'.)
```
## Notes on Grammar: Possessive Patterns
### The before the possessive
A barátom az iskolában tanul. My friend is studying in the school. English says 'my friend'. Hungarian says 'the my friend': a barátom.
A possessive noun takes the definite article, except a name or a noun used to address someone. Mondja, barátom, mit csinál? Tell me, my friend, what are you doing?
### Stress on whose it is
Ez az én barátom. This is my friend. To stress whose it is, the article and a personal pronoun stand before the possessive noun: az én barátom.
Az ő kabátja. His coat. Az ő kabátjuk. Their coat. Ő stands for 'his' and for 'their'. The ending shows which. Ők is never used this way.
### John's book
János könyve. John's book. A szálloda ajtaja. The door of the hotel.
The possessor is the noun that owns: János. It stands first, in the nominative. The thing owned follows in its his form: könyve. A plural possessor takes the same pattern: A fiúk pénze. The boys' money.
When the possessor is itself owned, both nouns take possessive forms: a barátom ceruzája, my friend's pencil. De itt van a nővérem írógépe. But here's my sister's machine.
**136** A barátom az iskolában tanul.
My friend is studying in the school.
**137** Jánosom az iskolában van.
My John is in school.
**138** Mondja, barátom, mit csinál?
Tell me, my friend, what are you doing?
**139** Ez az én barátom.
This is my friend.
**140** Az az ő apja, nem a mi apánk.
That's his father, not our father.
B. Possessive Patterns
The form corresponding to the English pattern: possessive adjective plus noun is generally preceded by the definite article in Hungarian except when the substantive is a proper noun or when it is used in address:
A barátom az iskolában tanul.  My friend is studying in the school.
BUT:
Jánosom az iskolában van.  My John is in school.
Mondja, barátom, mit csinál?  Tell me, my friend, what are you doing?
To emphasize possession, Hungarian usage requires the pattern: definite article plus personal pronoun before the usual possessive form:
Ez az én barátom.  This is my friend.
Az az ő apja, nem a mi apánk.  That's his father, not our father.
However, in the case of ő, the pattern is different. ő means 'his', 'her', 'its' when followed by the 'his' form of the possessive noun. When ő comes before a possessive noun with 'their' endings, ő means 'their'. The plural form ők is never used in this possessive construction. Examples:
Az ő kabátja.  His (her) coat.
Az ő kabátjuk.  Their coat.
When the possessor is a noun (either singular or plural) followed by the thing possessed, as John's book, the boys' money, the girl's friend, or the girls' family, or when the idea of possession is rendered by 'of' in English, as the door of the hotel, the corresponding Hungarian pattern is basic form of noun (either singular or plural) indicating possessor plus third person possessive ('his' form) of noun indicating the thing possessed:
János könyve.  John's book.
A szálloda ajtaja.  The door of the hotel.
A fiúk pénze.  The boys' money.
A lány barátja.  The girl's friend.
A lányok családja.  The girls' family.
In the preceding pattern if the possessor in turn is modified by a possessive adjective in English, as my friend's pencil, the corresponding Hungarian construction will require both possessor and thing possessed to be in possessive forms: a barátom ceruzája.
An alternative way of expressing possession with a possessive noun will be discussed in Unit 9.
## Notes on Grammar: The Possessive as Direct Object
### A possessive object
Nagyon szeretik a feleségemet. They like my wife a lot. The possessive takes the linking vowel e before -t: feleségemet.
Every possessive form takes a or e before the object -t. A possessive ending in a or e makes it á or é: Elviszem a nővére írógépét. I'm taking your sister's typewriter.
A possessive object is definite, so the verb takes the definite form: szeretik, elviszem.
**148** Nagyon szeretik a feleségemet.
They like my wife a lot.
**149** Látjuk a házukat.
We see their house.
```
C. The Possessive as Direct Object

All possessive forms require the linking vowel -a- or -e- before the direct object ending. (Note that the linking vowel is modified to -á- and -é- for those possessive forms ending in -a and -e.) When the direct object of a sentence contains a possessive, the verb is in the definite form.

Nagyon szeretik a feleségemet. They like my wife a lot.
Látjuk a házukat. We see their house.
