## Notes on Grammar: 'Ik' Verbs

### Verbs that end in -ik

Teniszezik. She plays tennis. A férje dolgozik. Her husband works. Hétfőn érkezik. She arrives on Monday.

Most verbs have no ending in the he and she form of the present: mond, he says. An ik verb is a verb whose he and she form ends in -ik.

Most ik verbs differ from other verbs only in the singular. Most are intransitive, so they have only the indefinite form.

### The I form ends in -m

A feleségem úszik vagy csónakázik, én pedig fekszem a fák alatt és alszom. My wife swims or goes boat riding. I lie under the trees and sleep.

In the I form an ik verb ends in -m: fekszem, fázom, érkezem. Some speakers say -k: fázok, érkezek. The -m form is more common and is preferred.

The table gives the present of five ik verbs. The singular rows hold the forms that differ from other verbs.

### Eat and drink are ik verbs too

Azt hiszem, tokaji bort isznak. I believe they're drinking Tokay wine.

Enni, to eat, and inni, to drink, are ik verbs. They are transitive, so they also have definite forms: eszem, I eat it, issza, he drinks it.

The second table gives the definite forms of enni and inni in the present.

Búcsúzik.  He says goodby.

The above sentences from the dialog of this unit all contain examples of a small group of verbs that do not fit into the pattern of conjugation of most other verbs we have had thus far. The characteristic of these verbs is the ending -ik of the third person singular present, in contrast to the "zero" ending of the regular type of verb. Most 'ik' verbs are irregular only in the singular. The majority of them are intransitive and so are inflected only in the indefinite form. Two examples of 'ik' verbs are listed in Unit 4. Although Enni and Inni in that unit are classified as irregular, they may also be identified as 'ik' verbs. Since these two are transitive, they have both definite and indefinite forms.

The following examples give the patterns for the conjugation of the present tense of 'ik' verbs:

fázni | érkezni | ugrani | fürdeni | feküdni
fázom
(fázok) | érkezem
(érkezek) | ugrom
(ugrok) | fürdöm
(fürdök) | fekszem
(fekszek)
fázol | érkezel | ugrasz
(ugorsz) | fürdesz
(fürödsz) | fekszel
fázik | érkezik | ugrik | fürdik | fekszik
fázunk | érkezünk | ugrunk | fürdünk | fekszünk
fáztok | érkeztek | ugrotok
(ugortok) | fürdötök
(fürödtök) | feküsztök
fáznak | érkeznek | ugranak
(ugornak) | fürdenek
(fürödnek) | fekszenek
(feküdnek)
(feküsznek)

The definite forms of the present of ENNI and INNI are:

ENNI | INNI
eszem | iszom
eszed | iszod
eszi | issza
esszük | isszuk
eszitek | isszátok
eszik | isszák

Note: In the speech of some Hungarians you will find a tendency to use the -k ending instead of the -m in the first person singular present indefinite of ik verbs. However, the -m ending is more prevalent and is considered preferable.
```
## Notes on Grammar: The Infinitive
### The infinitive ends in -ni
Leül olvasni. He sits down to read. A konyhába megy főzni. She's going into the kitchen to cook.
The ending -ni makes the infinitive: olvasni, to read, főzni, to cook. As in English, it often follows another verb.
Hol kell leszállni? Where do I have to get off? Maga hány órakor akar elmenni? At what time do you want to leave?
### The infinitive as a noun
Jobb adni, mint kapni. It's better to give than to receive. Nagyon kellemes úszni. It's very pleasant to swim.
The infinitive is a verbal noun. It can stand where a noun stands, as in English: to swim is pleasant. Nem jó egész nap aludni. It isn't good to sleep all day.
### A vowel before -ni
Most verbs add -ni to the stem with nothing between: várni, látni, adni, ülni.
Some add the auxiliary vowel -a- or -e- first: mondani, küldeni, segíteni, érteni. In most of them, three consonants would otherwise stand together. Hungarian has such clusters only at the start of a word.
These verbs take the auxiliary vowel before any ending that begins with a consonant: mondasz, mondanak. The table gives the present of five of them.
### The Infinitive, 1 of 4
### The Infinitive, 2 of 4
### The Infinitive, 3 of 4
### The Infinitive, 4 of 4
**96** Leül olvasni.
He sits down to read.
**97** A konyhába megy főzni.
She's going into the kitchen to cook.
**98** Segítenek neki ruhát venni.
They're helping her to buy a dress.
**99** Hol kell leszállni?
Where do I have to get off?
**100** Nem jó egész nap aludni.
It isn't good to sleep all day.
**101** Nagyon kellemes úszni.
It's very pleasant to swim.
**102** Jobb adni, mint kapni.
It's better to give than to receive.
```
B. The Infinitive

In the preceding examples of conjugation, and on numerous other occasions in your Hungarian lessons thus far, you have come across verb forms ending in -ni. This ending identifies a verb form as an 'infinitive', a form corresponding to the basic English verb form preceded by the word 'to', as for example, 'to go', 'to be', and 'to have'.

For most verbs in Hungarian, the infinitive ending is attached directly to the root, as állni, fázni, várni, látni, adni, főzni, ülni.

For other verbs an auxiliary vowel (-a- or -e-) is required before the infinitive ending -ni: mondani, küldeni, tanítani, segíteni, érteni. In this class of verbs the auxiliary vowel breaks up what would otherwise in most cases comprise a cluster of three consonants, a combination not occuring in Hungarian except in word-initial position. Note in the examples of this type of verb inflected in the chart below that an auxiliary vowel is required before any suffix beginning with a consonant. (However, note that when the verb stem ends in d and the ending begins with t, the d may be assimilated in pronunciation with the auxiliary vowel dropping out.)

mondok | küldök | tanítok | segítek | értek
mondasz | küldesz | tanítasz | segítesz | értesz
mond | küld | tanít | segít | ért
mondunk | küldünk | tanítunk | segítünk | értünk
mondotok
(mondtok) | küldötök
(küldtök) | tanítotok | segítetek | értetek
mondanak | küldenek | tanítanak | segítenek | értenek

One common use of the infinitive in Hungarian corresponds to its English use as a dependent infinitive, that is, associated in a construction with another verb:

Leül olvasni. He sits down to read.
A konyhába megy főzni. She's going into the kitchen to cook.
Segítenek neki ruhát venni. They're helping her to buy a dress.
Hol kell leszállni? Where do I have to get off?

The infinitive is a verbal noun and occurs in many nominal uses, for example, as the object of a verb:

Nem jó egész nap aludni. It isn't good to sleep all day.
Nagyon kellemes úszni. It's very pleasant to swim.
Jobb adni, mint kapni. It's better to give than to receive.
```
## Notes on Grammar: The Suffixes -ból, -ből and -n, -on, -en, -ön and Telling Time
### Into and out of
New Yorkból Bécsbe repülnek. They're flying from New York to Vienna. A jövő héten jön haza Franciaországból. She's coming home next week from France.
The suffix -ba or -be means motion into a place. The suffix -ból or -ből means motion out of it, from the inside of it.
Both go with verbs of motion: jön ki a másik szobából, coming out of the other room.
### In and on
Ott van az asztalon. There's some there on the table.
The suffix -ban or -ben means in, inside of. The suffix -n means on, on top of, over. It has the forms -on, -en and -ön: asztalon.
Both go with verbs that do not show motion. A gyerekek a vízben játszanak. The children play in the water.
### Words that take -n for in
De most Szegeden tanul az egyetemen. But he's studying now at the University of Szeged.
With Magyarország, some Hungarian cities and a few other words, -n means 'in'. Magyarországon, in Hungary. Budapesten, in Budapest. Szegeden, in Szeged. Földváron, in Földvár. Külföldön, abroad.
The table lists the words met so far that take -n for 'in'.
### The Suffixes -ból, -ből and -n, -on, -en, -ön, 1 of 2
### The Suffixes -ból, -ből and -n, -on, -en, -ön, 2 of 2
### Half of the way to the next hour
Fél tizenegykor megyek. I'll be going at half past ten. Fél tizenegy is half of the way to eleven.
English counts from the hour that is past. Hungarian counts toward the next hour.
Negyed kettő is 1:15, a quarter of the way to two o'clock. Fél is half past. Háromnegyed, three quarters, is a quarter to the next hour.
### Minutes past a quarter
Csak öt perccel múlt tíz. It's only five minutes past ten.
In everyday speech the time is told by the quarter hour. Minutes, perc, past, múlt, are counted from the nearest quarter or half.
Egy perccel múlt negyed tizenegy is 10:16. Két perccel múlt fél három is 2:32. Hat perccel múlt háromnegyed hat is 5:51.
**103** öt perccel múlt egy.
1:05
**104** egy perccel múlt negyed tizenegy.
10:16
**105** két perccel múlt fél három.
2:32
**106** hat perccel múlt háromnegyed hat.
5:51
```
C. The Suffixes -ból, -ből and -n, -on, -en, -ön

The suffix -ból (-ből) contrasts with -ba (-be) in that whereas -ba (-be) indicates motion into, -ból (-ből) basically means out of, from the inside of. (Both suffixes are used with motion verbs.)

The suffix -n (-on, -en, -ön) contrasts with -ban (-ben) in that while -ban (-ben) means in, inside of, -on (-en, -ön) signifies on, on top of, over. (Both suffixes are used with verbs that do not indicate motion.)

Note: When the suffix -n (-on, -en, -ön) is used with Magyarország (Hungary), with certain Hungarian cities and a few other words, it corresponds in meaning to the word 'in' in English. In addition to Magyarország, the following words that we have had thus far require this suffix to express 'in':

Buda | külföld | követség | észak | tél
Pest | állomás | konzulátus | dél | nyár
Szeged | tér | egyetem | kelet | hét
Földvár | környék |  | nyugat |
```
```
D. Telling Time

Some of the patterns Hungarians use in telling time are based on quite a different concept from that of English. For instance, when Americans verbalize the time expressed by the figures 1:15, we have the past hour in mind and usually say 'a quarter past one' or 'one-fifteen'. Hungarians, on the other hand, use the hour following as a point of reference, and say negyed kettő - 'a quarter of the way to two o'clock'. Likewise, 'half past' in Hungarian is expressed by fél - 'half' of the way to the next hour. 'Quarter to (of)' is háromnegyed - 'three quarters' of the way to the next hour. Thus our concept of telling time uses the past a great deal as a point of reference, while the Hungarian is more apt to look to the future in verbalizing the time.

In colloquial speech Hungarians reckon time according to the quarter hour, as suggested above. Minutes (perc) after or past (múlt) the hour will be given in relation to the nearest quarter or half. Thus, the pattern for

öt perccel múlt egy.  1:05
egy perccel múlt negyed tizenegy. 10:16
két perccel múlt fél három. 2:32
hat perccel múlt háromnegyed hat. 5:51
```
## Notes on Grammar: The Suffix -kor
### At a time: -kor
Maga hány órakor akar elmenni? At what time do you want to leave? Fél tizenegykor megyek. I'll be going at half past ten.
The suffix -kor means 'at'. It goes only on words for time. Ötkor, at five o'clock. Máskor, at another time. Mikor, when.
It has one form for back and front vowels alike. The word it is added to does not change.
**107** Hány órakor?
At what time?
**108** Ötkor.
At five o'clock.
**109** Mikor?
When?
**110** Máskor.
At another time.
```
E. The Suffix -kor

The ending -kor meaning 'at' has occurred many times in basic sentences of preceding units. It is always used with reference to time, and so can occur only with expressions indicating time. Note that -kor is not affected by the rule of vowel harmony, so its form is invariable. Note also that there is no modification of the stem to which it is added.

Hány órakor?  At what time?
Ötkor.  At five o'clock.
Mikor?  When?
Máskor.  At another time.
```
## Substitution Drill
