## Planning a scenic tour · Dialogue 1 of 6

### A tour of famous views

One man plans to use his vacation to visit Matsushima and see the rest of Japan.

His friend says, *松島 は いいね*, meaning "Matsushima is a nice place."

### The three famous views

Miyajima, Matsushima, and Amano-hashidate have been called Japan's Scenic Trio since olden days. The name is *日本三景*.

The answer *松島、天の 橋立、宮島 の 三つだ* names all three places.

Matsushima means "pine-clad island." Its name comes from the hundreds of pine-clad isles in the bay of Sendai.

### Kanji: 松, 景

New kanji in these lines. Read down: the kanji, its reading, then the words it makes.

### Kanji: 天

New kanji in these lines. Read down: the kanji, its reading, then the words it makes.

**1** 僕は 来月 二週間ほど 休かを とる事にしたので、東北地方、特に 松島に 行って 見たいと 思ってるんです。
ぼくはらいげつにしゅうかんほどきゅうかをとることにしたので、とうほくちほう、とくにまつしまにいってみたいとおもってるんです。
I have decided to have about two weeks vacation next month, so I am hoping to go to the TOOHOKU area, especially to Matsushima,

**2** 松島 は いいね。日本 三景 の 中で 一番 美しい と 言われている。
まつしまはいいね。にほんさんけいのなかでいちばんうつくしいといわれている。
Matsushima is a nice place. It is said to be the most beautiful place among the ’’Scenic Trio of japan” ,

**3** 日本 三景 というのは どこかね。
にほんさんけいというのはどこかね。
Where are the so-called ’’Scenic Trio of Japan”?

**4** 松島、天の 橋立、宮島 の 三つだ。
まつしま、あまのはしだて、みやじまのみっつだ。
They are Matsushima, Ama-no-hashidate, and Miya jima,

**5** まだ 一つも 見てないから、休か を 利用して、三景 ばかりでなく 全国 を 見物して まわりたいんだよ。
まだひとつもみてないから、きゅうかをりようして、さんけいばかりでなくぜんこくをけんぶつしてまわりたいんだよ。
I haven’t seen any of those places yet; so making use of vacations, I want to take in sightseeing of not only the ’’Scenic Trio” but also the entire country.

**6** 三年ぐらい 日本 に 居るんでしょうから、出来るだけ 見物して まわるのは いい 考だね。
さんねんぐらいにほんにいるんでしょうから、できるだけけんぶつしてまわるのはいいかんがえだね。
I suppose you’ll be staying in japan for about three years, but it’s a very good idea to go around sightseeing as much as you can.

```
1 —TO IU---- TO IU preceded and followed by the same noun, expresses the meaning of ’’every-----”.
Examples:
SHIMA TO IU SHIMA NIWA MATSU NO KI GA SHIGETTE IRU. ’’Pines grow thickly on every island.”
HEYA TO IU HEYA NIWA MADO GA ARIMASU. ’’There are windows in every room,”
MACHI TO IU MACHI NIWA EIGAKAN GA ARIMASU. ’’There are movie houses in every town.”
SEITO TO IU SEITO WA KANJI GA DEKIMASU. ’’Every student can write Kanji,”
KAMI TO IU KAMI NI NIPPONGO GA KAITE ARU. ”On every paper, Japanese is written.”
```

```
2 Question without KA While all sentences ending with question particle KA are questions, not all questions end with KA. Questions without KA are of two basic kinds. In the first type, the sign of the question is a final question-mark intonation; in Japanese, a rising pitched intonation.
Compare:
WAKARU ”It is clear."
WAKARU? "Is it clear?"
Examples of this kind also occur in formal style, particularly in the speech of women;
WAKARIMASU "It’s clear."
WAKARIMASU? "Is it clear?"
In the second kind of question without KA, the sign of the question is an interrogative word (for example, NAN, DOOKA, DOCHIRA, DORE, etc.) Such questions usually end with a tentative form (DESHOO or DAROO) and period intonation,
Examples;
DARE DESHOO "Who is it?" or "Who would that be?"
DOO SHIMASHOO ”What shall we do?”
SORE NAN DESHOO ”What would that be?” or ”What is that?”
```

```
1 SORYA, KORYA, ARYA KORYA, SORYA, ARYA are the contractions of KORE WA, SORE WA, and ARE WA. —RYA could be long or short. If long, it will be —RYAA.
Examples:
KORYA KOMATTA ”As for this, I’m baffled.”
SORYA IKEMASEN • ’’That won * t do.”
```

```
NIPPON SANKEI Miyajima, Matsushima, and Amano-hashidate are called the ’’Scenic Trio” of Japan from olden days. Matsushima will be explained here but the other two are described in the next two lessons. Matsushima (pine-clad Island) is so named from the hundreds of pine-clad isles in the bay of Sendai.
*ゆうらん船で 海から 見物するのが 一番 いいだろう* says that viewing it from the sea is probably best.
### A question without *か*
Not every question ends in the particle *か*. A final rising pitch can mark a question.
*君、行った 事 が ある* with rising pitch means "Have you ever been there?"
### Kanji: 展, 法
うん、ある。まつしまはゆうらんせんでうみからけんぶつするのがいちばんいいだろう。それから、ちかくのやまのちょうじょうからもながめることができる。てんぼうのせつびがあるから。
Yes, I have. It probably is best to view Matsushima from the sea on an excursion ship. And you can also view it from the summit of the nearby mountain because there is a viewing facility there.
Is it a big place?
### Hundreds of pine-covered islands
One speaker corrects a claim that Matsushima has eight hundred islands. He gives the number as more than two hundred sixty.
In *その 島という島には*, the repeated *島* points to every island. Each has densely growing pine trees.
*そりゃ* is a conversational contraction of *それは*.
## The beauty of scattered islands · Questions
### Matsushima in one account
The passage brings together the three famous views, Matsushima's varied islands, and the pine trees on every island.
*島という島には えだぶりの よい 松が しげっている* says that well-shaped pine trees grow densely on every island.
In good weather, the passage recommends a sightseeing boat through the islands. The boat reveals the beautiful open-sea sides hidden from the platform.
**74** 日本の 国には けしきの よい 所が 沢山 ありますが、松島、天の 橋立、宮島の 三つは むかしから 日本三景と 呼ばれています。この 中でも 松島は 一番 美しいと 言われています。松島は 仙台湾に あって、大小 二三百の 様々な 形の 島が 海上に ちらばっていて、しかも、島という島には えだぶりの よい 松が しげっているのです。松島見物は 付近の 山の 展望台から する事も 出来ますが、天気さえ よければ、ゆうらん船に のって、島と 島の 間を 通って 見物するのが 一番 いいらしいです。
にほんのくににはけしきのよいところがたくさんありますが、まつしま、あまのはしだて、みやじまのみっつはむかしからにほんさんけいとよばれています。このなかでもまつしまはいちばんうつくしいといわれています。まつしまはせんだいわんにあって、だいしょうにさんびゃくのさまざまなかたちのしまがかいじょうにちらばっていて、しかも、しまというしまにはえだぶりのよいまつがしげっているのです。まつしまけんぶつはふきんのやまのてんぼうだいからすることもできますが、てんきさえよければ、ゆうらんせんにのって、しまとしまのあいだをとおってけんぶつするのがいちばんいいらしいです。
There are many scenic places in Japan, but Matsushima, Amanohashidate, and Miyajima have long been called the Three Scenic Places of Japan. Of these, Matsushima is said to be the most beautiful. Matsushima is in Sendai Bay, where two or three hundred islands of various sizes and shapes are scattered across the sea, and every one of the islands is thickly covered with beautifully shaped pine trees. You can see the sights of Matsushima from observation platforms on the nearby mountains, but if the weather is good, apparently the best way is to board a sightseeing boat and pass between the islands.
**75** 展望台から ながめると、外海に 面した 方は 見えないのです。外海に 面している 部分は 大きい なみが あたるので、形が 又 変っていて、美しいそうです。
てんぼうだいからながめると、がいかいにめんしたほうはみえないのです。がいかいにめんしているぶぶんはおおきいなみがあたるので、かたちがまたかわっていて、うつくしいそうです。
When you look from the observation platform, you cannot see the side facing the open sea. Because large waves strike the parts facing the open sea, their shapes are different again and are said to be beautiful.
