## Introducing a prospective tenant · Dialogue 1 of 4

### Names before the greeting

Mrs. Yamamoto brings Mr. Clark to meet Mrs. Tanaka about a house for rent.

Mrs. Tanaka says *私、 田中と 申します。 どうぞ よろしく*, meaning "My name is Tanaka. Pleased to meet you."

A person being introduced states their name, then says *はじめまして*, *どうぞよろしく*, or both.

### Leaving out particles

The line *私、 田中と 申します* leaves out *は* after *私*.

Speakers often omit *GA*, *WA*, and *O*, especially in short sentences. This makes the expression slightly less formal.

### Kanji: 申, 実

New kanji in these lines. Read down: the kanji, its reading, then the words it makes.

### Kanji: -A 客, 近

New kanji in these lines. Read down: the kanji, its reading, then the words it makes.

**1** 御めん ください。
ごめんください。
Excuse me, is anyone home?

**2** まあ、 山本の 奥さん。 よく いらっしゃいました。
まあ、やまもとのおくさん。よくいらっしゃいました。
Well, Mrs. Yamamoto, I am glad you came.

**3** 実は 今日は お宅の かし家の 事で、 この方を おつれしました。 クラークさんと おっしゃって、 さい近 アメリカから お出でに なったのです。
じつはきょうはおたくのかしやのことで、このかたをおつれしました。クラークさんとおっしゃって、さいきんアメリカからおいでになったのです。
Matter of fact is that I brought this person today about the house you have for rent. This is Mr. Clark, and he came recently from the United States.

**4** 左様で 御ざいますか。
さようでございますか。
Is that right? My name is Tanaka. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

**5** 私、 田中と 申します。 どうぞ よろしく。
わたくし、たなかともうします。どうぞよろしく。
My name is Tanaka. Pleased to meet you.

**6** クラークと 申します。 どうぞ よろしく。
クラークともうします。どうぞよろしく。
We are the Clarks. Pleased to meet you.

```
--NO KOTO DE
Following a nominal, NO KOTO DE expresses the idea of 'on account of such-and-such,' 'concerning such-and-such,' or 'because of the matter pertaining to such-and-such.'
Examples:
ANO SEITO WA SHIKEN NO KOTO DE SHINPAI SHITE IMASU. "That student is worried on account of the examination."
KODOMO NO GAKKOO NO KOTO DE KONBAN DETE IKANAKEREBA NARIMASEN. "I have to go out tonight on account of my children's schooling."
OKANE NO KOTO DE KUROO SHITE IMASU. "I'm suffering for lack of money."
```

```
SETE or SASETE ITADAKIMASU
Following the negative base of consonant verbs and the negative base of vowel and irregular verbs, SETE ITADAKIMASU and SASETE ITADAKIMASU respectively express a polite request. For example, the literal translation of SHITSUREI SASETE ITADAKIMASU is "I'll have you cause me
(or let me) to be rude and ill-mannered." When the causative gerund (TE-form of a causative auxiliary verb) is followed by a verb of giving or receiving, it expresses an extremely polite way of asking permission. As you can see from the above sentence, to frame a sentence in such an indirect way as to show that it is not my wish but your command that I excuse myself is a mark of great respect. This practice is very popular among women in their polite speech or when shopkeepers express their courtesy to their customers.
Examples:
IKASETE ITADAKIMASU. "With your permission, I'll go."
KOKO DE MATASETE ITADAKIMASU. "With your permission, I'll wait here."
SORE O MISASETE ITADAKIMASU. "With your permission, I'll take a look at it."
MADO O SHIMESASETE ITADAKIMASU. "With your permission, I'll close the window."
```

```
HOSHII
HOSHII is an I-adjective indicating one's wants, and the thing wanted is followed by the particle WA or GA, depending on emphasis. HOSHII is regularly used in expressions of wanting but not in polite requests. For example, compare:
TABAKO GA HOSHII KARA, TABAKOYA E ITTE KIMASU. "I want some cigarettes, so I'm going to the cigar store."
with:
TABAKO O ONEGAI SHIMASU or TABAKO O KUDASAI. "I'd like some cigarettes." Or: "May I have some cigarettes?"
Also compare:
TABAKO GA HOSHII, "I want some cigarettes," meaning 'to want something.'
TABAKO O KAITAI, "I want to buy some cigarettes," meaning 'want to do something.' (cf. L. 29)
The negative of HOSHII is HOSHIKU WA NAI.
CHITTOMO HOSHIKU WA ARIMASEN. "I don't want it at all."
```

```
HAJIMEMASHITE, DOOZO YOROSHIKU
HAJIMEMASHITE is a greeting said to the other by the person who is being introduced. It is a shorter equivalent of humble polite HAJIMETE OME NI KAKARIMASU. YOROSHIKU is the adverbial (KU-form) of the adjective YOROSHII. DOOZO YOROSHIKU means 'please treat me favorably' or 'please remember me well.' A person being introduced always says, HAJIMEMASHITE or HAJIMETE OME NI KAKARIMASU and/or DOOZO
YOROSHIKU. Note also that in Japanese it is customary to repeat one's own name immediately upon being introduced before HAJIMEMASHITE.
```

```
DE (at the beginning of a sentence)
DE used at the beginning of a sentence is a conjunction meaning 'and' or 'and so---.' At times SORE DE is used instead of DE alone.
Examples:
DE, ANATA WA DOO SHIMASHITA KA. "And what did you do?"
DE, ANATA MO IKITAI NO DESU NE. "And so you too want to go?"
```

```
Omission of particles
GA, WA, and O are frequently omitted, particularly in short sentences; as a result the expression is slightly less formal.
Examples:
WATAKUSHI (WA) KONO UCHI (GA) TOTEMO KI NI IRIMASHITA WA. "I fell in love with this house."
KORE (O) KUDASAI. "Please give me this."
TABAKO (GA) ARIMASU KA. "Do you have cigarettes?"
