*とうざよ金は しょうばい上の 取引に よく 使われますね* means "Checking accounts are used often for business transactions, aren't they?"

### Kanji: 引

New kanji in these lines. Read down: the kanji, its reading, then the words it makes.

**1** あなたは どの銀行と 取引していますか。
あなたはどのぎんこうととりひきしていますか。
Which bank do you do business with?

**2** すみとも 銀行と 取引しています。
すみともぎんこうととりひきしています。
I do business with the Sumitomo Bank.

**3** 日本の 銀行よ金には どんなのが ありますか。
にほんのぎんこうよきんにはどんなのがありますか。
What kind of bank accounts do Japanese banks have?

**4** そうですね。 ふ通よ金、とうざよ金、ていきよ金などと 色々 あります。
そうですね。ふつうよきん、とうざよきん、ていきよきんなどといろいろあります。
Well, let me see. There are various kinds, such as ordinary savings accounts, checking accounts, time deposit accounts, etc.

**5** とうざよ金は しょうばい上の 取引に よく 使われますね。
とうざよきんはしょうばいじょうのとりひきによくつかわれますね。
Checking accounts are used often for business transactions, aren't they?

**6** ええ、しょうばい上の 取引は 大抵 小切手を 使いますからね。
ええ、しょうばいじょうのとりひきはたいていこぎってをつかいますからね。
Yes, because usually checks are used for business transactions.

```
Causative verbs - 'to make one do ---'
The ending SU is added to the first base of consonant verbs (regular) to form causative verbs with the meaning of 'to make one do ---' or 'to let one do ---.' The causative verbs thus formed are also consonant verbs and they carry the same meaning as the verbs that are formed by using the causative auxiliary SERU and SASERU.
Examples:
KIKU / KIKASU (to hear) / (to make one hear)
HANASU / HANASASU (to talk) / (to make one talk)
KAKU / KAKASU (to write) / (to make one write)
WAKARU / WAKARASU (to understand) / (to make one understand)
MATSU / MATASU (to wait) / (to make one wait)
NOMU / NOMASU (to drink) / (to make one drink)
TATSU / TATASU (to stand) / (to make one stand)
Compare the following:
KIKU / KIKASEMASU I make one hear.
KIKASU / KIKASHIMASU I make one hear.
KAKU / KAKASEMASU I make one write.
KAKASU / KAKASHIMASU I make one write.
```

```
ARU KOTO WA ARU
KOTO WA preceded by a modifying clause consisting of the basic form of verbs, I-adjectives, nominal + NO or NA or DATTA and followed by an independent equivalent of the modifier, is equivalent to 'to be sure so-and-so, but ---,' 'granted so-and-so, but ---,' or 'I do so-and-so all right, but ---.'
Examples:
TABERU KOTO WA TABERU GA ---. I eat it all right, but ---.
OOKII KOTO WA OOKII GA ---. To be sure it is big, but ---.
BENRI NA KOTO WA BENRI DESU GA ---. It is convenient all right, but ---.
ITTA KOTO WA ITTA GA. I went all right, but ---.
If the inflected word before and after KOTO is negative, the combination means 'granted that so-and-so isn't true.'
Examples:
ANMARI TABENAI KOTO WA TABENAIN DESU GA, SHINPAI WA ARIMASEN.
Granted that he doesn't eat much, but there is nothing to worry about.
In the case of the past tense like 'I did such-and-such all right, but ---,' the modifying clause of KOTO can be in the present tense basic form.
Examples:
IKU KOTO WA ITTA GA, ---. I went all right, but ---.
TABERU KOTO WA TABETA GA, ---. I ate it all right, but ---.
```

```
YEN and SEN
The monetary unit of Japan is the YEN. To count YEN, --EN is added to the numerals. Note, however, that before --EN, '4' is YO- instead of the more usual YON or SHI. The forms from 1 to 10 are:
|
ICHI-EN | ROKU-EN
NI-EN | NANA-EN or SHICHI-EN
SAN-EN | HACHI-EN
YO-EN | KYUU-EN
GO-EN | JUU-EN
Dollar exchange rates have changed considerably since 1930, as follows:
| Dollar | YEN
1930 | 1 | 2
1941 | 1 | 4
1945 | 1 | 15
1949 | 1 | 360
100 SEN make one YEN, but since the purchasing value of the YEN is so low, SEN are not used.
They also discuss the growing use of checks in Japan.
### Sending money
ええ、でもこのごろはにほんでもしんようせいがはったつしてきたから、こぎってもかなりつかわれています。もちろんべいこくほどいっぱんかされていませんがね。
No, but a credit system has developed these days in Japan, so checks are used considerably. Of course, they are not as universal as in the United States.
**11** では、送金したり、遠くの市から 品物を ちゅうもん したりする時には、かわせを 使うのですか。
## Making and letting people act · Perception drill, Block 1
### Making someone wait
*長い間 待たしました* means "I made him wait a long time." The form *待たしました* expresses causing another person to wait.
For a consonant verb, change the last sound to its A sound and add *SU*. *MATSU* becomes *MATASU*.
The causative can mean either making or letting someone do the action.
### The same ending in other verbs
In the beer line, *飲まさない* means not letting someone drink.
The same change makes *NOMU* into *NOMASU* and *HANASU* into *HANASASU*. The result is also a consonant verb.
## Conceding a point · Perception drill, Block 2
### A fact granted before a contrast
*私は 日本語を 話す事は 話すが、あまり 上手では ありません* means "I do speak Japanese, but I am not very good at it."
### Verbs and adjectives in the pattern
*この町は 静かな事は 静かですが、不便です* means "This town is quiet, but it is inconvenient."
A verb or I-adjective uses its basic form before *事は*. A NA-adjective takes *な*, as in *静かな事は 静かですが*.
たべることはたべるが、――――
I'll eat all right, but ---.
### Accounts serve different purposes
The passage compares time deposits, checking accounts, and ordinary savings accounts.
*ていきよ金にお金を入れた場合には、自分の好きな時に、お金を出す訳にはいきません* says money cannot be withdrawn from a time deposit whenever the owner likes.
Time deposits therefore pay the highest interest. Checking accounts support business transactions and check payments, but their interest rate is very low.
## Japanese cash and remittances · Reading Selection 2 of 2
### Cash and remittances
The passage names Japanese banknotes and coins, then explains why people often use cash and money orders.
*それで、送金したり遠くの市から品物をちゅうもんしたりする時には、銀行かわせやゆうびんかわせを利用します* says bank or postal money orders serve remittances and distant orders.
*少し不便な事は不便ですが* grants that money orders are inconvenient before saying that theft is less likely.
### Yen and sen
*こうかには、一円、五円、十円、五十円、百円があります* lists coin values from one yen through one hundred yen.
The unit of money in Japan is the yen. To count yen, add *EN* to a number. *ICHI-EN* is "one yen".
Before *EN*, four is *YO*, not *YON* or *SHI*. *YO-EN* is "four yen". Seven is *NANA-EN* or *SHICHI-EN*.
One hundred *SEN* make one yen. The passage says the sen is not used after inflation reduced the value of the yen.
