## Choosing a cloisonné gift · Dialogue 1 of 6

### A gift of cloisonne

A customer says, *七宝焼が ほしいんだが*, "I want some cloisonne, but do you have any?" The clerk offers several kinds.

Gold or silver wire outlines a design on silver or copper. Colored enamel fills the spaces before repeated baking and polishing complete the ware.

## Wired and wireless cloisonné · Dialogue 2 of 6

### Wire and painted designs

The clerk explains, *有線ですと、金や 銀の はり金で もようが 入れてあります*, "With wire design, gold and silver wires form the design."

*無線* has no wire. Its design looks like a painted picture, while the wired example has a butterfly and a brilliant peony.

### A softer informal question

The customer asks, *有線もようのも あるかね*, "Do you have one with a wire design, too?"

An informal question ending in *か* can sound abrupt. Adding *ね* after *か* makes it less abrupt without changing its meaning.

**7** はい、はいって おりません。御しょうちの様に 七宝には 有線と 無線が ありまして ----。
はい、はいっておりません。ごしょうちのようにしっぽうにはゆうせんとむせんがありまして----。

## Bargaining over expensive cloisonné · Dialogue 3 of 6

### The price of wired cloisonne

The buyer says the butterfly looks alive, then asks, *これで いくらかね*, "How much is this?" The *ね* after *か* softens the question.

The wired piece costs twenty-nine thousand yen. *少し まからないかね* asks whether the clerk can reduce the price a little.

The clerk attributes the high price to the gold and silver wire, but the buyer still considers it expensive.

*贈り物だから、別々に 包んで くれないか* means "Since they are gifts, will you wrap them separately?"

He then asks, *日本の 七宝焼は どこで 出来るのかね*, "Where is Japanese cloisonne made?" The *ね* softens the informal question.

**19** では、特別に 勉強いたしまして、二万五千円に いたして おきましょう。
