## Japan's textile industry · Questions

### Japan's textile materials

*日本では むかしから 織物業が さかんです* begins a description of Japan's textile industry.

It explains that raw silk is domestic. Cotton comes from the United States and Mexico, while wool comes mainly from Australia and New Zealand.

The textile industry has been flourishing in Japan since the olden days. This is especially true in the area centered around Osaka. Cotton textiles flourish the most, but nearly all the cotton used as the raw material for cotton thread has to be imported from the United States and Mexico. Cotton used to be grown in Japan as well, but today nearly one hundred percent of it is imported. When it comes to raw materials for textiles, only raw silk is domestically produced. Wool, the raw material for woolen yarn, comes mainly from Australia and New Zealand. Sheep are raised in Japan, too, but as a source of wool, they are so few as to be insignificant.
