## A doctor visits a patient · Dialogue 1 of 6

### The doctor arrives

A doctor visits Mr. Miller after fever, vomiting, and purging began the previous night.

The doctor asks, *ミラーさん、どうなさったんですか*, "Mr. Miller, what happened to you?"

### A respectful title for a doctor

*先生ですか。 どうぞ お上りください。 お待ちして おりました* means "Oh, it's you, Doctor. Please come in. We have been waiting."

*先生* means "teacher" or "doctor." As a form of address, it stands alone or follows a family name and shows respect.

Hello.

**2** 先生ですか。 どうぞ お上りください。 お待ちして おりました。

どうしたものか、さくばんからねつがでて、もどすやら、くだすやらたいへんです。
I don't know what happened, but from last night I became feverish and I have been vomiting and purging and it's terrible.

```
1 --KA SHIRA Following nominals and the basic form of verbs, adjectives and auxiliary verbs, suffix KA SHIRA expresses an idea of "I wonder (if, whether, how, when, where, who, what)."
HONTOO KA SHIRA. "I wonder if it can be true."
TANAKA-SAN WA BYOOKI KA SHIRA. "I wonder if Mr. Tanaka is sick."
ASHITA AME GA FURU KA SHIRA. "I wonder if it is going to rain tomorrow."
1 Examples ANO HITO WA ITSU KURU NO KA SHIRA. "I wonder when he is coming."
YAMADA-SAN WA MOO NIHON KARA KAETTA KA SHIRA. "I wonder if Mr. Yamada has already returned from Japan."
ANO HITO WA DOO NATTA NO KA SHIRA. "I wonder what has become of him."
SAMUI KA SHIRA. "I wonder if it is cold."
```

```
--TTE ---TTE and its more formal equivalent TO are quotatives. They follow a quotation consisting of any sequence whatsoever--a word, a part of a word, a sentence, a speech, etc. Following utterances, --TTE is more common than TO in rapid conversational Japanese, particularly in informal and plain speech.
ANO HITO WA KURUTTE IIMASHITA. "He said he is coming."
TABAKO O YAMETATTE, YAMAMOTO-SAN NI IIMASHITA. "He said to Mr. Yamamoto that he had quit smoking."
YONJUUDOTTE WAKARIMASEN. "I don't understand YONJUUDO."
TANAKA-SAN WA IKUTTE ITTE IMASHITA. "Mr. Tanaka was saying that he would go."
MOO MITATTE IIMASHITA. "I said that I had seen it already."
```

```
SESSHI and KASHI In Japan they use SESSHI (centigrade) for measuring temperature whereas in the United States we use KASHI (Fahrenheit). In order to convert SESSHI temperature to KASHI, the following formula is used. C x 9/5 + 32 = F and conversely (F-32) x 5/9 = C. For example, in order to convert 38.5°C to Fahrenheit temperature: 38.5°C x 9/5 + 32 = 101.3 F. conversely to convert 101.3 F to centigrade temperature: (101.3F -32) x 5/9 = 38.5°C
```

```
SENSEI SENSEI means "teacher" and "doctor" in both the medical and non-medical sense. It is a regular term of address for such persons, always implying respect and deference on the part of the speaker. As a term of address, it may be affixed to the family name or used independently.
## Taking temperature and pulse · Dialogue 2 of 6
### Two temperature scales
The doctor takes Mr. Miller's temperature and pulse. Mr. Miller finds the Japanese clinical thermometer different.
*日本のは 温度が せっしに なっている だけです* means "The Japanese thermometer has the temperature in centigrade, that's all."
### Centigrade and Fahrenheit
Japan measures temperature in centigrade, *せっし*. The United States uses Fahrenheit, *かし*.
To change centigrade into Fahrenheit, multiply by nine fifths and add 32. To reverse the conversion, subtract 32 and multiply by five ninths.
Thus, 38.5 degrees centigrade is 101.3 degrees Fahrenheit.
### Quoted words with って
In *わかりませんね。 四十度って*, *って* follows *四十度* and marks those words as the quoted expression that Mr. Miller does not understand.
*って* can follow any quoted sequence. In quick, informal conversation, it is more common than its formal equivalent, *と*.
The doctor thinks the illness is food poisoning and advises soft food for a time.
Mr. Miller chooses *半じゅくの たまご、おかゆに うめぼし*, "soft boiled eggs and rice-gruel with pickled plums."
