じゅんぜんとしたパブリックコースはひとつだけ。ふたつはぐんのコース。ほかはみんなクラブそしきといえるんだ。ひとつはこうかいしてるがね。
There is just one pure public golf course, and you might say that all the rest are the club system. Of course, one of them is open to the public. There are two courses for the military.

**5** それらは みんな 十八ホールかね。
それらはみんなじゅうはちホールかね。
Are they all 18-hole courses?

**6** 海軍のは 九ホールだと 思う。外は みんな 十八ホールだ。

I think the Navy course is 9 holes. The rest of them are 18 holes.

```
-----WA OROKA Following nominals, WA OROKA expresses the meaning of "not to mention ---- ", "to say nothing of", and "let alone." This is synonymous with —DOKORO KA which we have already learned in Lesson 78, except that DOKORO KA follows the basic forms of verbs and adjectives.
## Challenges of oceanfront golf · Dialogue 3 of 5
### Golf beside the ocean
The speakers describe bunkers, rough, strong wind, and fairways beside the ocean. *下手を すると 海の 中に うちこむ* means "If you are not careful, you will hit into the ocean."
Even simple shots fail under this pressure. Trying harder can produce more mistakes.
### Par, much less a birdie
*バーディは おろか、パーさえ 望めない* means "You cannot hope for a par, let alone a birdie."
*は おろか* follows the less attainable result, *バーディ*. The line then says that even the more attainable *パー* is beyond hope.
### Kanji: 望
New kanji in these lines. Read down: the kanji, its reading, then the words it makes.
**13** 冗談だよ。ペブルビーチ・コースは バンカーが 多く、海が すぐ そばに あるので、スコアは 九十に 近かった。でも、美しい コースだね。
じょうだんだよ。ペブルビーチ・コースはバンカーがおおく、うみがすぐそばにあるので、スコアはきゅうじゅうにちかかった。でも、うつくしいコースだね。
That's nonsense. The Pebble Beach course has many bunkers and there is an ocean right by, so my score was close to 90. But it surely is a beautiful course, isn't it?
**14** 僕も あそこでは、ラフに うちこんだり、海に うちこんだり、少し 風も 強かったので、ボギーが 上々というところだった。
ぼくもあそこでは、ラフにうちこんだり、うみにうちこんだり、すこしかぜもつよかったので、ボギーがじょうじょうというところだった。
When I played there, I hit into the rough and hit into the ocean and besides the wind was a little too strong, so the best I could do was to play bogey golf.
**15** あそこは フェアウェーも 手入れが よく してあって いいが、あるところは 海の すぐそばで、下手を すると 海の 中に うちこむ。七番ホールの ティーオフなどは おそろしい ようだった。
あそこはフェアウェーもていれがよくしてあっていいが、あるところはうみのすぐそばで、へたをするとうみのなかにうちこむ。ななばんホールのティーオフなどはおそろしいようだった。
The fairway was kept very well there, but at some places it is right by the ocean and if you are not careful, you'll hit into the ocean. The tee off at the 7th hole was kind of frightening.
**16** あそこは 目の下に グリーンが あるからね。まあ よほど 運が よくないと、バーディは おろか、パーさえ 望めない。
あそこはめのしたにグリーンがあるからね。まあよほどうんがよくないと、バーディはおろか、パーさえのぞめない。
That place has the green right under your eyes, so -----. Well, anyway, unless you are very lucky, you can't hope for a par let alone a birdie at Pebble Beach.
**17** 心理的に やられるんだね。ごく かんたんな ショットでも やりそこなって しまう。
しんりてきにやられるんだね。ごくかんたんなショットでもやりそこなってしまう。
I think we get beaten psychologically. We miss even a very simple shot.
**18** その通り。うまく やろうと すれば する程 へまを やる。あせると だめだね。
そのとおり。うまくやろうとすればするほどへまをやる。あせるとだめだね。
## Contrasting amounts and abilities · Perception drill
### Unable to read, much less write
*書く 事は おろか、読む 事さえ 出来ない のです* means "I cannot even read, let alone write it."
*は おろか* follows a noun or a nominal expression. It means "not to mention," "to say nothing of," or "let alone."
In this line, writing is out of reach. Even the more attainable act of reading is also out of reach.
### More than the first amount
*二時間は おろか、四時間も 勉強しなければならないんだ* means "I have to study, not two hours, but as much as four hours."
Here *は おろか* rejects two hours as too little. The contrasting amount extends the statement to four hours.
**27** バーディ は おろか パーさえ 望めない。
バーディはおろかパーさえのぞめない。
You can't even hope for par, let alone a birdie.
**28** このごろ 日本語が 少し 書ける ように なりましたか。
**29** 書く 事は おろか、読む 事さえ 出来ない のです。
かくことはおろか、よむことさえできないのです。
I can't even read, let alone write it.
**30** 田村君、君 十ドル 持っているか。
たむらくん、きみじゅうドルもっているか。
Say, Tamura, do you have $10.00?
**31** 十ドルは おろか、今 一ドルも 持っていないんだ。
じゅうドルはおろか、いまいちドルももっていないんだ。
I don't even have one dollar now, let alone $10.00.
**32** 君は 家で 毎晩 二時間ぐらい 勉強するのかね。
きみはいえでまいばんにじかんぐらいべんきょうするのかね。
Do you study about two hours at home every night?
**33** 二時間は おろか、四時間も 勉強しなければならないんだ。僕は 頭が 悪いからね。
にじかんはおろか、よじかんもべんきょうしなければならないんだ。ぼくはあたまがわるいからね。
I have to study, not two hours, but as much as four hours. I am not so smart, you see.
**34** 山本さんは 酒が 飲めないんだね。
やまもとさんはさけがのめないんだね。
Mr. Yamamoto can't drink sake, isn't that right?
**35** ええ、酒は おろか、ビールさえ 飲めないんです。
ええ、さけはおろか、ビールさえのめないんです。
## Much less comparisons · Pattern 1 1 of 3
### Even the easier case fails
The *は おろか* pattern places sake first as the less attainable case. The rest says that even beer is impossible.
**38** 酒 は おろか ビールさえ 飲めない。
さけはおろかビールさえのめない。
I cannot drink even beer, much less sake.
**39** かん字は おろか ひらがなさえ 書けない。
### Much less in a negative statement
*今のところ 新しい 自動車は おろか 古い 自動車さえ 買えないのです* means "For the time being, I cannot buy even an old car, much less a new one."
In this negative line, the pattern places the less attainable new car first. Even an old car remains impossible.
**47** 日本語の 生徒は 習う事が 多いですね。
にほんごのせいとはならうことがおおいですね。
Students of Japanese have a lot to learn, don’t they?
## Questions with much less · Pattern 1 3 of 3
### A question sets the first case
Questions about ability, possession, or plans supply the first case. The answer contrasts it with another case.
