## De “Rotterdam”

### A conversation to listen to

A spontaneous conversation between two educated Dutch speakers, recorded in 1961 without a script. The text keeps what they said as they said it: hesitations, repeated words, words left out.

Listen first with the text, then without it. The aim is to follow the whole conversation by ear.

Have you already heard about the flagship “Rotterdam” of the Holland-America Line?

Yes, I saw the launching two years ago.

**3** In Rotterdam?
Oh, in Rotterdam?

**4** Ja.
Yes. It was launched in the beginning of the year. It made its maiden voyage in September.

**5** Naar New York.
To New York.

**6** Naar New York, was met Prinses Beatrix aan boord.
To New York with Princess Beatrix on board.

I remember that my parents attended the gala dinner on board ship in New York.

**8** Dat was zeker wel leuk?
That must have been nice?

Yes, they both had a great time.

Have you already been on the new “Rotterdam”?

**11** Ja.
Yes.

**12** Hoe vond je het?
How did you like it?

The most fantastic ship I've ever been on.

How is the tourist class on board the new “Rotterdam”?

Well, I would almost say that it's as luxurious as the first class on other ships.

So, if you want to go by yourself on the “Rotterdam,” you will be able to travel tourist class in a private cabin?

**17** Ja, dat kan. Maar . . .
That's possible.

**18** Dat wist ik nooit.
I never knew that.

Well, I was lucky. I came over first class.

**20** Oh, dat was zeker wel ontzettend leuk?
That must have been very nice?

Yes, the band was great, of course. Every night there was dancing until far into the night. There was always good food on board.

Yes, that's quite good on the Dutch ships.

I'm planning to go to Eindhoven next week.

I think that really would be worth your while.

**25** Hoe zijn de Philipsfabrieken eigenlijk eh, opgekomen?
How did the Philips plant, eh, develop?

Well, it started very simply. I think it was the grandfather, or maybe even the father of Dr. Anton Philips, who was a peddler. And that slowly developed into the first lightbulb industry.

Yes, then they expanded in a relatively short period from those lightbulbs.

**28** Ja.
Yes.

At the moment, Philips is really one of the most well-known companies in the world.

Yes, of course, they had the advantage of starting exactly at the right time during the tremendous development of electricity.

Yes, that makes a lot of difference. And another thing that other firms don't have yet is that articles for export, like electric razors, have a special button on the plug so you can change from 110 to 240 volts.

**32** Ja.
Yes.

**33** Wat ontzettend gemakkelijk is.
Which is very useful.

## Amsterdam

Say, Shuul, good to see you back in Eindhoven. And how was your trip in Amsterdam?

**35** Oh, dat is me erg goed bevallen.
Oh, I liked it very much. I know the town a little, but I finally decided to take this little boat trip.

**36** Ja, weinig . .
Yes, few . . . Many Dutchmen who go to Amsterdam say, “Oh, well, we'll do it later sometime.”

Yes. I mean this trip through the canals and the ports of Amsterdam.

’s Nachts . . .
Yes, I've done it, too. I did it only last summer. At night . . .

**39** Oh!
Oh!

**40** . . . met alle lichtjes aan. Ik vond het een fantastisch gezicht!
. . . with all the little lights, I thought it was a fantastic sight.

**41** Oh, beviel je dat goed? . . .
Oh, you liked that? Oh, well, and what is the interesting part of such a boat trip at night?

Of course, it's not as busy, but that's all right when . . . because Amsterdam at night never stops. It goes on until all hours.

**43** Ja, dat zal wel.
Yes, that's so.

Of course, the nicest facades are illuminated with colored lights at night, which gives a beautiful effect.

Yes, that's a good idea. I'm glad to hear that. Next time I'll think of that.

Jan, did you see the soccer match between Sparta and Feijenoord last week?

Yes, I was able to get some tickets at the last moment.

**48** Dan heb je wel geboft.
You were really lucky.

Yes, they're always difficult to come by. Sparta and Feijenoord are both clubs from Rotterdam and they give all the tickets to their members.

Yes, but most of the time there are tickets for sale.

Well, they're bought by their members.

**52** Oh.
Oh . . .

So, if you're not a member you can hardly get a ticket.

**54** Uit hoeveel mensen bestaat één team?
How many people are on a team?

Well, each club has eleven men of which one is allowed to touch the ball with his hands.

**56** Dat de keeper.
That's the keeper.

**57** Dus de doelverdediger.
The goal keeper, yes.

**58** De doelverdediger, ja.
The goal keeper, yes.

And the other ten are divided over the field.

**60** Ja.
Yes.

Usually, there are three or four reserve players on the bench.

Are they allowed to play at any time or is that just during the break?

No, they're only allowed to take part when one of the players is hurt or during the break.

What other clubs do you know besides Sparta, Feijenoord and Ajax?

Other big clubs in the Netherlands would be the PSV of Eindhoven, and Fortuna. That's the club from Limburg, which is always pretty good.

**66** En Blauw-Wit, waar is dat van?
And Blauw-Wit, where is that from?

Blauw-Wit isn't in the honor division anymore, I think. It isn't one of the big clubs anymore.

**68** Grootste clubs . . .
Biggest clubs . . .

## De Filmindustrie in Nederland

**69** Heeft Nederland eigenlijk een filmindustrie?
Does the Netherlands actually have a film industry?

Yes, it's quite a young one, but we do have a film industry. I think the studios are in Duivendrecht.

And do they show those abroad, too, or are they only suitable for the Dutch public?

No, the latest movie came out at the film festival in Cannes.

Oh, is that right? So, the Netherlands are actually quite well known internationally in the film field.

Yes, especially for documentary films; I don't know if you saw Bert Haanstra's movie?

**75** Nee. En niet-documentaire films? Hoe zit dat met de taal?
No. And what about the non-documentaries? What about the language?

Abroad I think they play in Dutch with different subtitles everywhere . . .

**77** Dus de omgedraaide wereld.
So, actually the other way ’round?

**78** Ja, inderdaad.
That's right.

But I really never knew that the Netherlands had a film industry. Have they been at it for a long time?

Well, they started right after the war and, eh, of course, we don't have special movie actors, we get most of our actors from the stage.

**81** Ja, het zijn natuurlijk betere acteurs.
And, of course, they are better actors.

**82** En betere acteurs.
And better actors.

## Substitution drill 1, part 1

### Substitution drills

A drill starts from one sentence of the dialogs. Each turn gives a new word or phrase to put in the sentence in place of one of its parts.

Say the whole sentence again with the new part in place. The shape of the sentence does not change. Only the one part does.

**83** Ze hadden alletwee zeer veel plezier.
They both had a lot of fun.

**84** Ze hadden alletwee heimwee.
They both were homesick.

```
Substitution Drills
DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book II, Lesson 41. Substitution Drill 1.
Listen to and repeat the first sentence of the drill on tape. Your voice will be followed by a low voice on tape to correct any mistakes in your utterance. You will now immediately hear a word or phrase that you are to substitute into the original sentence. Without hesitating, say the entire sentence again, this time with the new element in place of an element in the original sentence. You will again be corrected. Then you will hear, as before, another element for substitution. Again you will repeat the entire sentence, dropping the old element and substituting the new element in its place.
They are based on the previous five dialogs. Their purpose is to give you fluency in controlling sentences of the dialogs with additional variations provided by the substitution elements. You will observe that the basic structure of the dialog sentences does not change in these drills.
The test tape consists of a translation drill containing fifteen sentences taken from the dialogs of the unit. This is a test for comprehension.
Have pencil and paper ready. Listen to the sentences and write an English equivalent in the time allotted.
The test tape tests only your comprehension of dialog sentences. The English provided in these answers is an equivalent and not a literal translation. Any parallel English sentence would be acceptable.
```
