## De Nederlandse Taal

### A conversation to listen to

A spontaneous conversation between two educated Dutch speakers, recorded in 1961 without a script. The text keeps what they said as they said it: hesitations, repeated words, words left out.

Listen first with the text, then without it. The aim is to follow the whole conversation by ear.

**1** Amerikanen menen dikwijls, dat Nederlands alleen maar een dialect is van het Duits. Dat is natuurlijk helemaal verkeerd.
Americans often think Dutch is only a dialect of German. That, of course, is completely wrong.

**2** Maar weet je, wat ze helemaal niet geloven, dat in zo'n klein landje als Nederland eigenlijk, eh, dat er zoveel verschillende dialecten bestaan.
But do you know, they won't believe at all that there are so many different dialects in a country as small as Holland.

**3** Ja, je hebt b.v. in Limburg de zachte “g”.
Yes, for instance, in Limburg you have the soft “g”.

**4** Juist.
That's right.

**5** Maar eigenlijk is Fries dus niet Nederlands, eigenlijk.
But the Frisian language isn't really Dutch.

**6** Nee, Fries is een taal op zichzelf. Maar heb je wel eens gehoord, dat eh, Fries het meest op het Engels lijkt?
No, Frisian is a language all it's own. But did you know that Frisian resembles English most of all?

**7** Nee.
No.

**8** En dan in het Zuiden van Nederland. Natuurlijk in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen bijvoorbeeld lijkt het weer op het Belgisch.
And then in the south of the Netherlands. Of course, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen it resembles Belgian again.

**9** Dan heb je het Vlaams, ja . . . maar ik vind dat het beste zou dus eigenlijk gesproken worden door de omroepers van de radio.
Then you have Flemish, yes . . . but I really think that the best language is spoken by the announcers over the radio.

**10** Ja, ook een prettige stem om naar te luisteren, meestal.
Yes, and most of the time, a very nice voice to listen to.

**11** En de uitspraak is natuurlijk de beste.
And, of course, the pronunciation is the best.

**12** Perfect.
Perfect.

**13** En natuurlijk dan heb je de Amsterdamse uitspraak of de Rotterdamse uitspraak.
And, of course, then there is the dialect of Amsterdam. The pronunciation of the language in Amsterdam or the pronunciation of the language in Rotterdam.

**14** Ja, dat verschilt ook nog een heleboel.
Yes, that makes a lot of difference.

**15** Want als je soms een echte Amsterdammer hoort, dan kan je horen, dat het echt plat Nederlands is.
Because when you hear somebody from Amsterdam, then you can really tell that it's low Dutch.

**16** Ja, wat hebben ze ook weer voor een kwartje, een “heitje”?
Yes; what do they say again for a quarter, a “heitje”?

**17** En meer van die woorden.
And more words like that.

I. Dialog for Listening

DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book III, Lesson 15. De Nederlandse Taal

This is a spontaneous conversation between educated and imaginative Dutch speakers. No scripts were used in recording. The result is natural spoken Dutch.

All the dialogs entitled Dialog for Listening have been reproduced in your text in such a way as to capture their spontaneity. This includes hesitation sounds, repetitions, omitted words and other features that are characteristic of unrehearsed, non-selfconscious, conversational-style speech.

The Dialog for Listening section is for oral comprehension. The student should follow this section in his text, as he listens to it on tape, until such time as he can dispense with the text and understand everything from the tape alone.

## Uit Eten Gaan

**18** Goedenavond, mijnheer. Kan ik U helpen?
Good evening, sir. Can I help you?

**19** Wat hebt U op het menu vanavond?
What do you have on the menu tonight?

**20** Heeft U nog geen menu gezien?
Haven't you seen the menu yet?

**21** Nee.
No.

**22** Ogenblikje, zal ik er even één voor U halen. Kijkt U eens, ik weet niet of U iets aparts wilt hebben, maar als U één van deze drie wilt hebben.
Just a second, I'll get you one, look here, I don't know if you would like something special, but if you want one of these three . . .

**23** Die goulash daar houd ik niet erg van, maar wat zou je aanbevelen van die twee andere?
I don't like the goulash too much, but which of the other two would you recommend?

**24** Ik weet niet of U van roostbief houdt.
I don't know whether or not you like roastbeef.

**25** Ja, als het van goede kwaliteit is dat wou ik eigenlijk horen.
Yes, if it's good, that's what I wanted to know.

**26** Ja natuurlijk, mijnheer, we hebben alleen maar goede kwaliteit hier.
Yes, of course, sir, we only have high quality here.

**27** Heb je nog aspergesoep?
Do you still have the asparagus soup?

**28** Ja.
Yes.

**29** Schrijft U dan mij op voor aspergesoep.
Put me down for the asparagus soup.

**30** Wilt U een bordje of een kop?
Would you like a bowl or a cup?

**31** Een kop alsjeblieft.
A cup, please.

**32** Een kop, en dan de kip met appelmoes en hoe wilt U Uw aardappelen? Gebakken of gekookt of?
A cup and then the chicken with applesauce, and how would you like your potatoes? Fried or boiled?

**33** Gebakken aardappelen.
Fried potatoes.

**34** En wilt U nog een salade erbij?
And would you like a salad with it?

**35** Ja, alsjeblieft.
Yes, please.

**36** En wat wilt U voor dessert, we hebben appelgebak of ijs of vruchtenpudding.
And what would you like for dessert; we have apple pie or ice cream or fruit pudding.

**37** Ik geloof dat ik het dessert maar helemaal weglaat of is dat inbegrepen?
I think I'll leave out the dessert completely, or is it included?

**38** Het is inbegrepen in de prijs, mijnheer.
It's included in the price, sir.

**39** Oh.
Oh.

**40** Eén vijfentachtig het hele menu.
One guilder, eighty-five cents the entire meal.

**41** Ja, geeft U dan het appelgebak.
Yes, well, then give me the apple pie.

**42** Appelgebak en koffie neem ik aan?
Apple pie and coffee, right?

**43** En koffie alsjeblieft.
And coffee, please.

**44** Fijn, dan zal ik 't eventjes voor U bestellen, mijnheer. Het zal niet lang duren want op het ogenblik is het niet zo erg druk.
Fine, then I'll order it for you, sir. It won't be long, because we aren't very busy at the moment.

## Venetië

**45** Ik heb gehoord dat je een paar jaar in Venetië geweest bent?
I heard that you lived in Venice for a few years?

**46** Ja, wij hebben 2 jaar in Venetië gewoond eh, we zijn pas terug.
Yes, we lived in Venice for two years, eh, we just came back.

**47** Oh, dat is mooi.
Oh, that's nice.

**48** Het is een heel charmante stad, maar de twee jaar, die we er gewoond hebben, vond ik het niet zo leuk meer op het einde.
It's a very charming city, but the two years we lived there, I didn't like it too much at the end, anymore.

**49** Oh ja?
Oh, yes?

**50** Ze zeggen wel eens, dat Amsterdam het Venetië van het Noorden is, maar het verschil in atmosfeer is toch wel te merken.
They sometimes say that Amsterdam is the Venice of the North, but you can notice the difference in atmosphere.

**51** Eh, bedoelde U dat Amsterdam zoveel gezelliger is in de winter?
And, you mean that Amsterdam is so much more friendly in the winter?

**52** Ja, Amsterdam is meer een cosmopolitische stad. De Venetianen beschouwen zich niet eens als gewoon Italianen. Ze zijn een aristocratisch ras op zichzelf eigenlijk meer.
Yes, Amsterdam is more a cosmopolitan city. The Venetians don't consider themselves Italians. They are really an aristocratic race in itself.

**53** Ja.
Yes.

**54** Hun eigen dialect is ontzettend sterk en het is door de douaneregelingen, is het ook eh, vrij apart van Italië, het heeft een vrije haven en een aparte douane in Venetië. Ik vermoed dat Venetië in de dertiende of veertiende eeuw opgekomen is.
Their own dialect is very strong and also, because of the custom regulations it is, eh, rather separated from Italy; it has a free port and there is separate customs inspection in Venice. I think that Venice came up during the thirteenth or fourteenth century.

**55** Ja.
Yes.

## Fotograferen

**56** Jan, ik zie dat je ook een fototoestel hebt.
John, I notice that you also have a camera.

**57** Ja, het is niet zo'n duur toestel, maar ik hoop hiermee te beginnen.
It isn't such an expensive instrument but I hope to start with it.

**58** Oh, dat is prachtig zeg.
Oh, that is beautiful, say.

**59** Ik heb nog geen flash gekocht en ik heb zo'n beetje geëxperimenteerd om binnen dus toch nog foto's te maken.
I have not bought a flash, and I have experimented a little to take pictures inside, anyway.

**60** Ja, daar is natuurlijk niet zoveel aan te doen, tenzij precies een flash aan te schaffen. Dat is eigenlijk de oplossing.
Yes, you can't do to much about it unless you buy a flash, exactly. That is really the solution.

**61** En hoe noodzakelijk is een belichtingsmeter?
And how necessary is a light meter?

**62** Niet zozeer voor binnenwerk, het wordt eigenlijk kritiek bij een kleurenfoto. Er zijn maar weinig mensen die op het oog kunnen schatten, hoelang ze een kleurenfoto moeten belichten. Bij zwart en wit is het met een beetje oefening en een beetje scherpzinnigheid wel te doen.
Not so much for indoor shots, it becomes really critical with color film. There are only few people who can judge with the naked eye how much they have to expose color film. With black and white it can be done with a little bit of practice and ingenuity.

**63** En zijn die dingen erg duur?
And are these things very expensive?

**64** Een belichtingsmeter is niet zo duur.
A light meter is not that expensive.

**65** Het is de moeite waard om betere foto's te hebben.
It is worth the trouble to get better pictures.

**66** Ja, kijk ze worden pas duur als ze heel gevoelig zijn, en, met andere woorden, als je ze in het hele donker zou willen gebruiken.
Yes, look, they only become expensive if they are very sensitive, and, in other words, if you want to use them when it's very dark.

**67** En mijn volgende stap zal dus zijn om een belichtingsmeter te kopen.
And my next step will be to buy a light meter.

**68** Ja, als je van plan bent om kleurenfoto's te nemen, dan zou ik je dat zeker aanraden.
Yes, if you are planning to take color pictures, then I would certainly advise you to do that.

## Bij de Bakker

**69** Goedemorgen mijnheer. Kan ik U helpen?
Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

**70** Ja, alsjeblieft. U zult me echt moeten helpen, ik neem de plaats van mijn vrouw in; die had het zo druk, zei ze, met de was en allerlei dingen die bij elkaar kwamen en vroeg me of ik misschien voor brood kon zorgen voor het hele weekeinde.
Yes, please. You really have to help me, because I'm substituting for my wife; she said she was too busy with the laundry and all kinds of things which came at the same time and asked me if I could perhaps take care of the bread for the weekend.

**71** Oh, eens even kijken, wat voor brood had U willen hebben? Wit of roggebrood of bruinbrood?
Well, let me see, what kind of bread would you like? White or rye or wheat bread?

**72** Nou, laat eens kijken, wij hebben witbrood en bruinbrood gewoonlijk.
Let me see, we usually have white bread and wheat bread.

**73** Hoe groot is Uw familie eigenlijk?
How big is your family?

**74** Ja, dat is man en vrouw en drie kinderen.
Yes, that is husband, wife and three children.

**75** Drie kinderen, nou dan heeft U toch minstens wel twee wittebroden nodig voor het hele weekend. Wat wilt U verder hebben . . . gebak?
Three children, well, then, you need at least two loaves of white bread for the whole weekend. What else would you like . . . pastry?

**76** Wel, eh ik geloof dat wij altijd verse koekjes hebben voor het weekeinde en dan voor de zondagmiddag ook een gebakje voor ieder, dus dat zou dan 5 stuks zijn.
Well, eh, I think we always have fresh cookies for the weekend and then for Sunday, each of us has a pastry, that makes five.

**77** Zo, dat is dan de gebakjes. En wilt U nog iets van snoep hebben misschien?
Well, here are the pastries. And would you like some candy maybe?

**78** Ja, doet er ook maar wat snoep bij.
Yes, give me some candy, too.

**79** Zal ik het zo bij elkaar inpakken?
Shall I wrap it up all together?

**80** Ja, alsjeblieft.
Yes.

**81** Kunt U het meenemen of moet ik het laten brengen?
Can you take it with you or shall I have it delivered?

**82** Nee, dat neem ik dan zelf wel mee.
No, I'll take it myself.

**83** Neemt U het mee?
You will take it with you?

**84** Ja.
Yes.

**85** Fijn, dat is dan, laat eens even kijken, dat is dan drie-, vier-, vier-vijfentwintig mijnheer.
Fine, that is, let me see, that is, then, three, four, four twenty-five, sir.

**86** Ja, uitstekend.
Yes, excellent.

**87** Alstublieft.
Here you are.

**88** Goedemorgen.
Good morning.

**89** Goedemorgen.
Good afternoon.

**90** Dag juffrouw.
Good day, miss.

## Substitution drill 1, part 1

### Substitution drills

A drill starts from one sentence of the dialogs. Each turn gives a new word or phrase to put in the sentence in place of one of its parts.

Say the whole sentence again with the new part in place. The shape of the sentence does not change. Only the one part does.

**91** Dat is natuurlijk helemaal verkeerd.
That, of course, is all wrong.

**92** Dat is natuurlijk helemaal niet waar.
That, of course, is not true at all.

**93** Dat is natuurlijk langzamerhand zo gegroeid.
That, of course, was slowly formed this way.

**94** Dat is natuurlijk niet goed voor de lijn.
That, of course, isn't good for your figure.

**95** Dat is natuurlijk van belang voor onze maatschappij.
That, of course, is of importance to our company.

**96** Dat is natuurlijk een vergissing.
That, of course, is a mistake.

**97** Dat is natuurlijk niet te vermijden.
That, of course, can't be overlooked.

```
Substitution Drills
DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book III, Lesson 20. Substitution Drill 1.
Listen to and repeat the first sentence of the drill on tape. Your voice will be followed by a low voice on tape to correct any mistakes in your utterance. You will now immediately hear a word or phrase that you are to substitute into the original sentence. Without hesitating, say the entire sentence again, this time with the new element in place of an element in the original sentence. You will again be corrected. Then you will hear, as before, another element for substitution. Again you will repeat the entire sentence, dropping the old element and substituting the new element in its place.
They are based on the previous five dialogs. Their purpose is to give you fluency in controlling sentences of the dialogs with additional variations provided by the substitution elements. You will observe that the basic structure of the dialog sentences does not change in these drills.
## Unit 3 test, part 1
### The unit's test
Fifteen sentences from the unit's dialogs, heard once each.
Write the English for each. Any English that says the same thing is right. The test asks only whether the sentence was understood.
Yes, that also differs quite a bit.
**147** Maar eigenlijk is Fries dus niet Nederlands?
But the Frisian language isn't really Dutch?
Test on the Unit
DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book III, Lesson 21. Test on Unit 3.
The test tape consists of a translation drill containing fifteen sentences taken from the dialogs of the unit. This is a test for comprehension.
Have pencil and paper ready. Listen to the sentences and write an English equivalent in the time allotted.
The test tape tests only your comprehension of dialog sentences. The English provided in these answers is an equivalent and not a literal translation. Any parallel English sentence would be acceptable.
