## De D.A.F.

### A conversation to listen to

A spontaneous conversation between two educated Dutch speakers, recorded in 1961 without a script. The text keeps what they said as they said it: hesitations, repeated words, words left out.

Listen first with the text, then without it. The aim is to follow the whole conversation by ear.

Have you seen the new DAF cars yet?

Well, this last vacation in Holland I saw quite a few driving around. Kind of a little, a small kind of car with an odd shape.

Yes, I've often seen pictures of them. What is the real difference, eh, between the DAF and the other small cars such as a Renault and a Volkswagen, and so on?

The Netherlands started to make a small car like that, then, because they'd come up with an idea for an automatic clutch.

Well, are they built heavier or lighter than a Renault or a Volkswagen?

They're a little lighter, mainly because it has an aluminum engine, I think, and also, of course, the transmission has been omitted completely.

Of course, it doesn't hold the road as well as a heavier car?

**8** Dat is waar.
That's true.

What would you suggest, supposing that I wanted to buy a car?

Well, for your wife an automatic transmission would be nice, but for yourself, I'd perhaps buy a Renault or a Volkswagen.

Oh, but then that would be two cars!

**12** Ja, dat zou dan het beste zijn.
Yes, that would be best.

**13** Nou, ik zal eens uitkijken, zeg. Dank je wel voor je goede raad.
Well, I'll look around. Thanks for your good advice.

**14** Goed. Dag Shuul.
Fine. Bye, Shuul.

I. Dialog for Listening

DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book III, Lesson 29. De D.A.F.

This is a spontaneous conversation between educated and imaginative Dutch speakers. No scripts were used in recording. The result is natural spoken Dutch.

All the dialogs entitled Dialog for Listening have been reproduced in your text in such a way as to capture their spontaneity. This includes hesitation sounds, repetitions, omitted words and other features that are characteristic of unrehearsed, non-selfconscious, conversational-style speech.

The Dialog for Listening section is for oral comprehension. The student should follow this section in his text, as he listens to it on tape, until such time as he can dispense with the text and understand everything from the tape alone.

The Hague is really a difficult city to go out in evenings. I can never really find anything that I can go to, there is really so little to do in The Hague, I find.

Well, of all three of the big cities, of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague, I believe that The Hague offers the most.

**17** Nou ja, het is meer Scheveningen natuurlijk.
Well, yes; naturally, it's more Scheveningen.

**18** Ja, dat is natuurlijk wel waar.
Yes, that's really quite true.

On the Geverts Deynoots Square, there you have . . . then you have the Dance Palace there on the corner and the “Kurhaus” bar, and then you have the Savoy. And the students' night club is there, too. And, of course, Pia Beck [ very popular jazz pianist and vocalist].

**20** Pia Beck, ja.
Pia Beck, yes.

**21** In de kelder daar.
In the cellar there.

**22** Vliegende Hollander.
The Flying Dutchman. That's, of course, where . . . eh, the “Kurhaus”, naturally, is always an attraction, too, with its concerts, but then you have to be especially interested in music.

Have you ever been to one of those concerts in eh . . . ?

Two years ago we went to the “Kurhaus”, to Nathan Milstein.

In Den Haag zelf is niets.
There really is a lot of lively night life there at Scheveningen, but then that's about all. In The Hague itself there is nothing.

**26** Helemaal niets.
Nothing at all.

## Sinterklaas

Pardon me, sir, for addressing you, but who is that man, there, with the high red miter and the long beard, with all the children standing around him?

**28** Oh, dat is St. Nikolaas.
Oh, that's St. Nicholas.

**29** St. Nikolaas, wie is dat?
St. Nicholas, who's that?

St. Nicholas was really a bishop at Mira, in Asia Minor, and was highly venerated in Spain, and, in the Middle Ages, his fame spread to the Netherlands.

**31** Is dat met de Spaanse bezetting gekomen?

That was a result of the Spanish occupation. He was the patron saint of seafarers and, so, eh, the patron saint of Amsterdam.

**33** Amsterdam?
Amsterdam?

Yes, because Amsterdam was a port city. At that time, too, the custom was slowly established of having St. Nicholas give rewards for good behavior every year to the seafarers' children, who lived in a kind of boarding school, if they had been good.

Did that start in the Middle Ages, as you said?

**36** Dit is in de Middeleeuwen begonnen.
That began in the Middle Ages.

**37** En op welke dag is St. Nikolaas?
And when is St. Nicholas' day?

**38** Dat is de zesde december.
That's the sixth of December.

Who is the little black man who always goes with him?

Yes, that's Black Pete, and that's another legend, that was added later. Well, then, once the idea had been established here that St. Nicholas came from Spain, then, of course, he had to have someone from Spain to accompany him.

**41** Oh!
Oh!

Pardon me, sir, do you have a light?

**43** Zeker, zeker.
Certainly, certainly.

**44** Hier . . . Juist.
Here . . . right. Oh, I see that you're reading the sports' page. Are you interested in sports, too?

**45** Ja.
Yes. I'm not a, not an expert, not at all, but I do read through it every day to see what's new.

**46** Ja.
Yes, I'm a foreigner myself and, eh, I find it so interesting that the Dutch lose themselves completely in soccer. Where I come from, it's, of course, baseball, what you call "honkbal" in Holland. Or, uh, American football, which, of course, is something entirely different.

I've heard that, uh, European or Dutch football is played in America, too, but that it has a different name there. Is that so?

**48** Juist, juist.
Right, right. It's called soccer there and right now it's starting to get popular. Many of the universities have started it.

**49** Eh . .
Uh . . . do I understand correctly that you're allowed to use the hands there?

**50** Alles is toegelaten.
Everything is allowed. You can grab each other, which, of course, is strictly forbidden in Dutch football, as I understand.

**51** In het Nederlands voetbal. Oh, ja . . .
In Dutch football . . . yes, yes . . .

**52** Fijn.
Fine. Have a good trip.

**53** Dank U wel.
Thank you.

## Koninginnedag

Tomorrow is the Queen's Birthday again, how time flies, eh?

Yes, terrible. Now I've heard that they're planning to hold the birthday celebration of the Queen on the day of Queen Wilhelmina, that is, on the 31st of August.

I think it's much better. For that matter, we shouldn't be the only country to do that, because in England they do it exactly the same.

**57** Oh, is dat zo?
Oh, is that so?

Well, I think that's much better when it's on the 31st of August.

Yes, with such things, the question often is, who has to take the initiative.

No, I don't know who has to take the initiative in that case. Probably the government. Yes, and, of course, one advantage is, it falls on April thirtieth and then you have the First of May celebration and, after that, the Fifth of May celebration that, therefore, falls flat.

**61** Ja. Dat is waar.
Yes. That's true.

Because a lot of people complain about the Fifth of May celebration, but . . .

That is, it seems to me, also one of the reasons why the Fifth of May celebration, one could say, is such a flop.

Oh, that's always been a flop, I believe that they only celebrated it once, and that was all, too.

**65** Ja, ja.
Yes, yes, yes . . .

Yes, but we'll see what'll come of it.

## Substitution drill 1, part 1

### Substitution drills

A drill starts from one sentence of the dialogs. Each turn gives a new word or phrase to put in the sentence in place of one of its parts.

Say the whole sentence again with the new part in place. The shape of the sentence does not change. Only the one part does.

Have you already seen those new DAF cars?

**68** Heb je het nieuwe monument al gezien?
Have you already seen the new monument?

**69** Heb je de tentoonstelling al gezien?
Have you already seen the exposition?

**70** Heb je de laatste vertoning al gezien?
Have you already seen the last performance?

Have you already seen the latest Dior fashions?

Have you already seen any of the new cars?

Have you already seen the new Shell building?

```
Substitution Drills
DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book III, Lesson 34. Substitution Drill 1.
Listen to and repeat the first sentence of the drill on tape. Your voice will be followed by a low voice on tape to correct any mistakes in your utterance. You will now immediately hear a word or phrase that you are to substitute into the original sentence. Without hesitating, say the entire sentence again, this time with the new element in place of an element in the original sentence. You will again be corrected. Then you will hear, as before, another element for substitution. Again you will repeat the entire sentence, dropping the old element and substituting the new element in its place.
They are based on the previous five dialogs. Their purpose is to give you fluency in controlling sentences of the dialogs with additional variations provided by the substitution elements. You will observe that the basic structure of the dialog sentences does not change in these drills.
## Unit 5 test, part 1
### The unit's test
Fifteen sentences from the unit's dialogs, heard once each.
Write the English for each. Any English that says the same thing is right. The test asks only whether the sentence was understood.
**122** Wie is toch die man daar / met die rode mijter op?
Who is that man there with the red mitre?
**123** Hij was de patroon van de scheepvaarders / en dus patroon van Amsterdam.
He was the patron saint of the seafarers and, therefore, the patron saint of Amsterdam.
**124** Is dat begonnen in de Middeleeuwen, zoals U zegt?
Did that start in the Middle Ages, as you said?
**125** Wie is dat kleine zwarte mannetje / dat altijd bij hem loopt?
Who is that little black man who always goes with him?
**126** En op welke dag is Sint Nikolaas?
And when is St. Nicholas' Day?
**127** Wat zou je me aanraden / veronderstel dat ik zelf een auto zou willen kopen?
What would you suggest, supposing that I wanted to buy a car?
**128** Deze laatste vakantie in Nederland / heb ik er vrij veel zien rondrijden.
Well, this last vacation in Holland, I saw quite a few driving around.
```
Test on the Unit

DLI Dutch Refresher Course (1961), Book III, Lesson 35. Test on Unit 5.

The test tape consists of a translation drill containing fifteen sentences taken from the dialogs of the unit. This is a test for comprehension.

Have pencil and paper ready. Listen to the sentences and write an English equivalent in the time allotted.

The test tape tests only your comprehension of dialog sentences. The English provided in these answers is an equivalent and not a literal translation. Any parallel English sentence would be acceptable.
```
## Unit 5 test, part 2
