The Aeneid is the poem Rome wrote to explain itself. A man carries his father out of a burning city and spends the rest of his life paying for a future he will not see: a love abandoned on the shore of Carthage, a descent to the dead to be shown what it is all for, and a war in Italy he never wanted. Vergil gives empire its noblest voice and then, line by line, counts what it costs. It is the most influential poem in European literature, and the sound of the Latin is half the reason.
