  2. 2

    alleys that, through towering dwellings,

  3. 3

    press darkly downward toward the harbor;

  4. 4

    the bright gold of the processions will roll;

  5. 5

    in place of rags, the inherited

  6. 6

    bed-linens, which long to billow,

  7. 7

    from the balconies, each higher than the last

  8. 8

    (as if mirrored in flowing water) will hang.

  9. 9

    But today, on the door-knockers, hammers

  10. 10

    at every moment someone fully laden,

  11. 11

    and they drag ever-new purchases along;

  12. 12

    and yet the stalls still stand there, bursting full.

  13. 13

    On the corner, a hacked-open

  14. 14

    ox displays its fresh inner walls,

  15. 15

    and all the legs end in little flags.

  16. 16

    And a hoard as if from a thousand sacrifices

  17. 17

    crowds onto benches, slings itself round pegs,

  18. 18

    squeezes, bulges, heaves itself out of the gloom

  19. 19

    of all the doors, and before the gaping

  20. 20

    of the melons the loaves stretch themselves out.

  21. 21

    Full of greed and bustle is the dead;

  22. 22

    yet far quieter are the young cockerels

  23. 23

    and the hung-up billy-goats

  24. 24

    and quietest of all the lambs,

  25. 25

    which the boys take up around their shoulders

  26. 26

    and which nod willingly with each step;

  27. 27

    while, set in the wall, the brooch of the glass-cased

  28. 28

    Spanish Madonna, and the silver

  29. 29

    in the diadems

  30. 30

    gleams the brighter with the foretaste of candlelight

  31. 31

    shimmers. But above, in the window,

  32. 32

    an ape shows itself off, squandering every glance,

  33. 33

    and swiftly, in a presumptuous

  34. 34

    posture performs gestures that are unbecoming.
