Notes on Grammar: The Concept of the Plural

Singular after a number

Hat férfit láttam. I saw six men. Itt van három magyar újság. Here are three Hungarian newspapers.

English puts the noun in the plural after a number. Hungarian keeps it singular: férfit, újság. The same holds after words of quantity: Sok levelet írok. I'm writing many letters. Néhány könyvet vesz. He's buying a few books.

More singulars than English

Cigarettát akarok venni. I want to buy cigarettes. Szép szeme van. She has pretty eyes. For several things of the same kind, Hungarian generally uses the singular.

Two singular subjects joined by és, 'and', usually take a singular verb. With things, they always do. Hol van a sör és a bor? Where are the beer and the wine?

  1. 102

    I saw six men.

  2. 103

    Here are three Hungarian newspapers.

  3. 104

    I'm writing many letters.

  4. 105

    He's buying a few books.

  5. 106

Where are the beer and the wine?

  6. 107

    I want to buy cigarettes.

  7. 108

    She has pretty eyes.

  8. 109

John and Mary are going shopping.

  9. 110

The book and the paper are on the table.

A. The Concept of the Plural

As already mentioned in the preceding unit, both English and Hungarian use the concept of number, which distinguishes one (singular) from more than one (plural). However, the use of this concept in the two languages is not always the same. Quite often Hungarian will use the singular form where English requires the plural. This is always the case after numerals and words denoting quantity, such as 'many', 'several', 'few'. Likewise, where English uses the plural in referring to several items of identical description, Hungarian will generally use the singular. In compound statements, where a subject consists of two singular nouns connected by the conjunction 'and', the verb in English will generally be plural, whereas the corresponding concept in Hungarian will usually be expressed by the singular form of the verb. This is always true when the subject refers to things rather than persons.

Compare the Hungarian and corresponding English below:

Hat férfit láttam. I saw six men.
Itt van három magyar újság. Here are three Hungarian newspapers.
Sok levelet írok. I'm writing many letters.
Néhány könyvet vesz. He's buying a few books.
Hol van a sör és a bor? Where are the beer and the wine?
Cigarettát akarok venni. I want to buy cigarettes.
Szép szeme van. She has pretty eyes.
János és Mária vásárolni megy (mennek). John and Mary are going shopping.
A könyv és a papír az asztalon van. The book and the paper are on the table.

Notes on Grammar: The Formation of the Plural of Nouns and Cardinal Numerals, 1 of 3

The plural ends in -k

Itt vannak a fogkefék. Here are the toothbrushes. Ott elég jó férfiruhák vannak. They have some fairly good men's suits there.

The plural ending is -k. After a vowel it goes on the way -t does: ajtó, ajtók. Final a and e become á and é: férfiruhák, fogkefék.

After a consonant, always a linking vowel

Ott nagyon szép edények vannak. They have very beautiful dishes there. Edény ends in a consonant, so the plural takes a linking vowel: edények.

The -t form sometimes needs no linking vowel. The -k form after a consonant always needs one: asztal, asztalt, asztalok.

Where the -t form has a linking vowel, the plural has the same one: ágyat, ágyak.

Where the -t form has none, the plural generally takes o in back-vowel words, and e or ö in front-vowel words: asztalok, sörök.

The plural object

The plural object adds -at or -et to the plural: ajtókat, könyveket. The -t always comes after the -k.

The table gives each noun four times: subject and object, singular and plural. Every plural object ends in -kat or -ket.

Numbers are built from one to ten

Négyszázötven forint. Four hundred and fifty forints. The number is one word: négy, száz, ötven.

Eleven to nineteen put tizen before the unit: tizenegy, tizenhárom. Twenty-one to twenty-nine put huszon before it: huszonegy. From thirty on, the unit follows the ten directly: ötvennyolc.

The tens from forty to ninety end in -van or -ven. A long vowel shortens: négy becomes negyven, hét becomes hetven.

Kettő alone, két before a noun

Kérem, adjon két darabot. Give me two bars, please. Két stands before a noun. Kettő stands alone. Twelve has the same pair: tizenkettő, tizenkét.

Numbers up to 2000 are written as one word: ezerötszáz. From 2000 on, the thousands are one word, and a hyphen joins the rest: ötezer-ötvenöt, 5055.

In figures of five or more digits, a space marks the thousands where English puts a comma.

B. The Formation of the Plural of Nouns

Most English nouns have an ending in their plural forms, e.g., cats, dogs, horses. Hungarian likewise has an ending to indicate the plural: -k. This -k is added to words ending in a vowel in exactly the same way as the direct object suffix -t, that is, directly to the basic form if that form ends in any vowel except a and e. These vowels are modified into á and é respectively before the addition of the plural ending. For words ending in consonants, the -k must always be preceded by an auxiliary vowel. (Note that this differs from the formation of the direct object in that the direct object form does not always require an auxiliary vowel for words ending in consonants.)

The auxiliary vowels for the plural are exactly the same as those used for the direct object: -o- and -a- for back-vowel words, and -e- and -ö- for front-vowel words, in accordance with the rule of vowel harmony. The distribution of these vowels is identical also, since the direct object and plural stems are identical. Therefore, in all those cases where the direct object form does not require an auxiliary vowel, the corresponding form for the plural will generally require -o- before -k in back-vowel words, and -e- or -ö- before -k in front-vowel words. However, for the plural of proper names the ending is always -ék. (But note the usual change of -a,-e: Rózsa-Rózsáék, Fekete-Feketeék.)

The accusative (direct object) plural is formed by adding -at or -et (in accordance with the rule of vowel harmony) to the plural nominative (basic) form.

The chart following contains examples of the nominative (subject) and accusative (direct object) forms. (Note that in the nouns having two suffixes, the direct object suffix -t always follows the plural suffix -k and the second auxiliary vowel is always -a- for back-vowel words and -e- for front-vowel words. Note also that rounded-vowel nouns do not always take a rounded linking vowel to form the plural. However, those rounded-vowel nouns that do not require a linking vowel in the accusative will generally take the linking vowel -ö- before the plural suffix.)

C. Cardinal Numerals

Cardinal numbers from one to ten form the basis on which Hungarian numbering is built. The numbers from eleven to nineteen and from twenty-one to twenty-nine are formed by adding these basic cardinals to the forms tizen and huszon, respectively. In the series of thirties (harminc) and beyond, the cardinal numbers are joined to the tens without intervening suffix or auxiliary vowel. The tens from forty to ninety are formed by adding the suffix -van or -ven, with corresponding shortening of long vowel where it occurs in the basic form (négy - negyven; hét - hetven).

The two forms for the number 'two': kettő and két, are in complementary distribution; that is, ordinarily they are not used interchangeably. Kettő is a substantive and is used when the numeral stands alone. Két, on the other hand, functions as an adjective and is always found in an attributive position.

Compound numerals up to 2000 are written as one word. From 2000 on the elements comprising the thousand-unit are written as one word. All units in the hundreds that follow are written as one word also, but hyphenated to the thousand-unit. If the number following the thousand-unit is less than 100, it also is hyphenated to the thousand-unit.

Where English uses commas to set off units of thousands in a series of figures, Hungarian uses spaces when the figure consists of five or more numbers.

The following list gives the numbers which will enable you to count through the thousands in Hungarian:
