1 Maritime Self-Defense Force

The Maritime Self-Defense Force was established in 1952. It has approximately 40,000 personnel and 230 vessels consisting of destroyers, escort vessels, submarines, torpedo vessels, and minesweepers.

Japan is an ’’island country” with 25,640 kilometers of coastline. She depends much upon foreign trade. The volume of imports amounts to 120,674,000 tons in a year. Japan has a merchant fleet of 8,500,000 tons and fishing boats totalling 2,030,000 tons. This underlines the importance of maritime defense in securing the freedom of activity of the people on the high seas; therefore, the main mission of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force is to engage in anti-submarine patrol, escort of fleet and patrol around harbors.

To accomplish this mission, the Maritime SelfDefense Force operationally covers activities in the air, on the water and underwater, and it is assigned self-defense fleet, fleet escort force, fleet air force, air training command, five regional districts, submarine and various

other units.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force has no battleships, but it has escort destroyers of 1,000 tons and 3,000 tons with excellent radars, sonars, and surface-to-air missiles (TARTAR).

There is a world-wide trend to change from a bigship and heavy-gun policy to a small-ship and efficientarms policy. The Maritime Self-Defense Force is making an effort to modernize and mechanize their equipment along this pattern.

Domestic shipbuilding of vessels for MSDF was started in 1953 and up-to-date, 90 ships have been built.
