1 Air Self-Defense Force
The Air Self-Defense Force was established in 1954, the youngest of the three services. It presently has about 45,000 personnel and approximately 1,200 aircraft.
Air defense is one of the most important activities of modern national defense. It requires maintenance of new model aircraft and other related modern equipment. F-104J, F-86D, and F-86F as fighter-interceptors, F-104DJ, T-33, and T-1 as training aircraft and C-46 as transport aircraft are assigned to the Air Self-Defense Force. Besides the aircraft, the Air Self-Defense Force has aircraft control and warning system (BADGE) with its communication system and surface-to-air missiles (NIKE).
Three Air Defense Forces, Northern, Central and Western, are organized under the Air Defense Command. Air Technical Training Command, Flying Training Command, Air Transport Wing and Airways, Air Communication and Weather Service Wing are also in the Air Self-Defense Force. Each Air Defense Force consists of one to four combat wings and is assigned a sector of operation. Radar sites all over Japan are on a twenty-four hour alert status and the Air Self-Defense Force is ready to counter any aggression from the air.
The in-country production program of 200 F-104J's, Mach 2 speed fighter-interceptor, will be completed at the end of the 1964 fiscal year.
