Finding a good tailor · Dialogue 1 of 6

A suit for cooler weather

Morning and evening now feel cold in summer clothes. One speaker wants a between-season suit and asks a friend for a good tailor.

*あい服を 一着 こしらえたいんですが* means "I want a between-season suit made." In *一着*, the counter *着* joins *一* to mean "one suit of clothes."

A polite request for an introduction

*しょうかいして いただけませんか* means "would you please introduce me to him?" The ending makes this an indirect, polite request for a favor.

The friend recommends *銀座一丁目の 山形屋*, "Yamagataya in Ginza 1-chome."

A 1 ---TE KURENAI KA (---TE KUREMASEN KA) Following the TE-form of verbs, KURENAI KA expresses the meaning of ”Won’t you please do --- for me”, or ”Would you do --- for me.” The polite form of this will be TE KUDASAI MASEN KA. This expression is softer and less direct than one consisting of TE + KUDASAI. Examples: KONO KATA NI SHITE KURENAI KA. ”Won’t you please make it this style?” MOO SUKOSHI MATTE KURENAI KA. ”Won’t you please wait for me a little longer.” TETSUDATTE KURENAI KA. ”Won’t you lend me a hand? ISSHO NI ITTE KURENAI KA. ”Won’t you go with me?” KORE O KATTE KURENAI KA. ”Won’t you please buy this for me?”

TE ITADAKEMASEN KA is an indirect and more polite way of asking the same thing as TE KUDASAIMASEN KA and it means "May I have you do such-and-such for me."
CHAKU CHAKU is a counter for clothes. It does not occur as an independent word but is joined with numerals in compounds. ITCHAKU one suit of clothes; NI-CHAKU two suits of clothes; SAN-CHAKU three suits of clothes; YON-CHAKU four; GO-CHAKU five; ROKU-CHAKU six; NANA-CHAKU seven; HATCHAKU eight; KU-CHAKU or KYUU-CHAKU nine; JITCHAKU ten.
—SEI SEI is a noun meaning ”make” or ”manufacture” but it is never used alone, but is used with other nouns to make a compound noun For example: NIHONSEI ”Japanese make” BEIKOKUSEI ”American make” EIKOKUSEI ”English make” TESEI ”handmade”
B 3 ONEGAI SHIMASU It literally means ”I make a request”, but freely it means ”Please” when the speaker requesting something or requesting something to be done.

Bargaining over suit fabric · Dialogue 3 of 6

The price of striped cloth

The customer considers brown striped cloth for a two-piece suit. He asks whether the price can fall from 32,000 yen to about 25,000 yen.

The tailor says that the material is high quality and cannot be made so cheaply.

Made in England

*これは 英国製の 上等の 生地です* means "this is a high-class material of English make."

*製* means "make" or "manufacture." It joins another noun and does not stand alone.

In *英国製*, *英国* names England and *製* makes the compound "English make."

    とりました。ズボンがほそいのがこのごろのわかいひとのはやりだが、ちゅうねんのひとにはあまりにあわないので、ミラーさんはすこしふとくしてもらうことにしました。ミラーさんはにちようびにきょうとへいかなければならなかったので、それにまにあうようにどようびのごごまでにはまちがいなくこしらえてくれとたのみました。ようふくやはもくようびのごごかりぬいができるから、そのときにおいでくださればどようびのあさまでにはまちがいなくできあがるといっていました。

He took his measurements. Narrow trousers are currently fashionable among young people, but since they do not look very good on middle-aged people, Mr. Miller decided to have his made a little wider. Since Mr. Miller had to go to Kyoto on Sunday, he asked the tailor to be sure to make it by Saturday afternoon so that it would be ready in time. The tailor said that the fitting would be ready Thursday afternoon, and that if Mr. Miller came then, the suit would be sure to be finished by Saturday morning.
