Examples;

Ranks and command duties · Dialogue 2 of 5

Promotion to major general

*それで、陸将補に 進級 された のでしょう* asks for confirmation of a promotion to major general.

The officers discuss the promotion and the duties at the new posting. *陸将補* is "major general."

The deputy title

*副師団長 です* means "I am a deputy division commander."

The prefix *副* on some titles means "vice," "deputy," or "assistant." Here it marks the division commander's deputy.

  1. 7

  4. 10

    そうです。はんすういじょうはいっさです。ばあいによってはりくしょうほでしだんちょうもやります。

That’s right. More than half the number are colonels. Depending upon the cases, a major general acts as a division commander.

  5. 11

Since you are transferred to Chitose, all the members of your family must be glad?

A cold new posting

*特 に 冬 は 寒くて、雪 が 沢山 降る そうですから、それが 心配 なんでしょう* says the family probably worries about winter cold and snow.

The reply says they will soon adapt to the climate and can enjoy skiing and skating.

  1. 13

    それはそうでしょう。

    I suppose you are right.

  2. 14

    とくにふゆはさむくて、ゆきがたくさんふるそうですから、それがしんぱいなんでしょう。

  3. 15

That’s true, but you’ll soon get used to the cold weather. You can spend the time very pleasantly because in the winter you’ll have such winter sports as skiing and skating.

  4. 16

    そうでしょうね。わたくしもいえのものにそういっているんです。それにわかいものにはすこしぐらいさむくてもなんでもないですよ。

I suppose so. I am telling the same thing to my wife. Furthermore, even if it is a little cold, for young people it is really nothing.

Preparing for operational command · Dialogue 4 of 5

Busy with preparations

*それでは 色々 かたずけなどで お忙しい 事でしょうね* means "Then, I suppose you must be busy with all the tidying up."

*事でしょうね* presents the speaker's confident inference about the other person's situation.

Work in the new post

*新しい 仕事 の じゅんびも 大変 でしょうね* infers that preparations for the new job must be difficult.

The new deputy commander expects guidance from *くぼた 陸将*. The rank *陸将* means "lieutenant general."

  1. 19

    それではいろいろかたずけなどでおいそがしいことでしょうね。

Then, I suppose you must be bxxsy with all the tidying up?

  2. 20

  3. 21

  4. 22

    じつはしだんちょうのくぼたりくしょうとはずっとこころやすくしていただいていますので、にんちでおちついてから、ゆっくりしょくむじょうのしどうをうけたいとおもっております。

In fact, i have been a very good friend of Lt. General Kubota, who is the Division Commander, for a long time. So, after I settle down at my duty station, I’m hoping to receive guidance in a leisurely manner concerning my duty.

  5. 23

    むらたさん、あなたはきこうせんがせんもんなんだから、おてのものでしょう。

Mr. Murata, since your specialty is armored warfare, this job is your forte, isn’t it?

  6. 24

    はあ、じしんはもっています。ですから、じつどうぶたいにいるほうがおもしろいですよ。まいにちまいにちつくえにかじりついてじむをとるのはわたくしにはむきませんよ。

Inferring feelings and circumstances · Perception drill

A state inferred with confidence

*このごろ は 試験の じゅんびで 忙しい 事でしょうね* means "You must be busy with the preparation for an examination these days."

*事でしょうね* or *事だろうね* follows a basic I-adjective or verb form and makes the inference emphatic.

Present and past inferences

*忙しい 事でしょうね* infers a present state. *つかれた 事でしょうね* infers that someone must have become tired.

The adjective or verb supplies the time. After verbs, this pattern usually applies to the subject's condition or state.

  1. 28

    いそがしいことでしょうね。

You must be busy without a doubt?

  2. 29

Your son is graduating and he must be very happy indeed?

  7. 34

    ところがことしはすこしさむかったので、さくのがすこしおくれて、まだはんぶんぐらいしかさいていないそうですよ。

But it was a little cold this year, so the blooming is delayed a little and only about 50 per cent are blooming.

  8. 35

    スミスくん、きみもいちねんのあいだにほんごのべんきょうでずいぶんくろうしたことだろうね。

Say, Smith, you must have suffered a hardship studying Japanese for a period of one year?

Expressing confident assumptions · Pattern 1 1 of 3

A present state

*つゆですから、今 東京 は ずい分 むしあつい 事でしょうね* means "Since it is the rainy season, Tokyo must be very hot and humid now."

The *事でしょうね* from *忙しい 事でしょうね* also follows an I-adjective that states the inferred condition.

A difficult experience

*ずい分 くろうした 事でしょうね* means that Mr. Smith must have had a very hard time.

The past form *くろうした* places the inferred experience in the past.

  1. 41

    このごろほっかいどうはさむいことでしょうね。

Hokkaido must be cold around this time of year.

  2. 42

    つゆですから、いまとうきょうはずいぶんむしあついことでしょうね。

A feeling from a report

*子供さんが けがを されて、入院された そうですが、さぞ ご心配 な 事でしょうね* reports the circumstances and infers great worry.

The reported injury provides the basis for the inferred present feeling.

  1. 50

    もうじゅうねんもにほんにいっていませんが、ずいぶんかわっていることでしょうね。

I have not been to Japan for ten years, but it must have changed a great deal.

  2. 51
