Invitation to watch fishing films · Dialogue 1 of 6

An invitation for tomorrow night

One man invites Hara to his house tomorrow night. *原君、明日の 晩 うちへ やって来ないかね* means "Hara, won't you please come to my house tomorrow night?"

The negative verb followed by *かね* makes the line a gentle invitation.

Eight-millimeter films

The host first describes photographs from a fishing trip. He then corrects the guess that they are slides.

*いや、いや、八ミリだ* means "No, no, they are 8 millimeter films." *MIRI* is short for *MIRI-MEETORU*, "millimeters."

NEGATIVE Verb + KA NE The structural pattern of informal negative NAI-form of verbs plus KA NE expresses persuasion or request and means ”Won’t you do such-and-such” or ”Shall we do such-and-such.” Examples; KOMBAN KONAI KA NE. ”Won’t you please come tonight?” MOTTO TABENAI KA NE. ”Won’t you eat some more.” TETSUDATTE KURENAI KA NE. ”Won’t you please help me?” KOMBAN ISSHO NI EIGA NI IKANAI KA NE. ”Won’t you go to a movie with me tonight?” MOO SUKOSHI MAKARANAI KA NE. ”Won’t you make it a little cheaper?” KIMI NO PEN O KASHITE KURENAI KA NE. ”Won’t you please lend me your pen?” KOOHII DEMO NOMI NI IKANAI KA NE. ”Shall we go to drink coffee or something?”
MIRI MIRI is an abbreviation of MIRI-MEETORU or ”millimeters.” 8 MIRI stands for 8 mm. movie and 35 MIRI stands for 35 mm. camera. The Cannon camera is one of the best and the most expensive 35 mm. cameras in Japan.
B.2 KAMERA The output of cameras, which had once been only 129,000 units in 1948, rose to 1,385,000 units in 1957. The ever-increasing demand abroad is being met with Japanese lenses and metal processing techniques of the high quality. The large-aperture lenses, such as F:2, F:1.9, and F:1.8, once confined to top quality cameras, are now extensively used in all Japanese cameras. Analysis of the production shows that 52% of all cameras had 35 mm. shutter lenses. About half the total camera output is exported, leading all optical instrument sales. The 8 mm. Cine cameras and 16 mm. professional projectors made in Japan, recently introduced into international markets, have received a favorable response.

Photography as a serious hobby · Dialogue 4 of 6

*以前は やったが、このごろは 八ミリに ねっちゅうして、ほとんど やらない* means "I did them before, but I hardly do them because I am absorbed in 8 millimeter pictures these days."

He cannot develop color pictures or films himself. He sends each film to a company for developing.

He can now take pictures that satisfy him. His new projector can run a film backward and stop it at any point.

Japanese camera production

Japan made 129,000 cameras in 1948 and 1,385,000 in 1957. Japan exported about half of its cameras.

Japanese lenses and metal processing were of high quality. Japanese 8 mm movie cameras received a favorable response in international markets.

Japanese cameras and film developing · Questions 1 of 2

Cameras, film, and slides

The passage describes Japanese camera makers, 35 mm cameras, and 8 mm movie equipment. It also explains commercial processing of color film.

*三十五ミリの 天然色写真は 自分で げんぞうしますか* means "Do you develop 35-millimeter color film yourself?"

An answer states that most people send film to a company. The company develops the film and makes it into slides.

  1. 73

Recently, good cameras have come to be made in Japan. Canon, Minolta, Yashica, Nikon, and Topcon are among the well-known brands. Recently, good 8-millimeter movie cameras and projectors have also come to be made. Many Japanese-made cameras are sold in the United States too. Nowadays, if you send 35-millimeter color film to a company to have it developed, they make it into slides for you. Therefore, slide projectors have become necessary. Some people develop and print their own photographs, but in most

cases they do it merely as a hobby, so nowadays the great majority of people send their film to a company to have it developed. Mr. Miller has also become very interested in photography lately, and he bought a 35-millimeter camera and an 8-millimeter movie camera and has been taking pictures. I hear that when he went fishing about a month ago, he took his 8-millimeter camera along and took pictures.
