its dykes with the excess of its outflow,

  3. 3

so now there broke through the voices of the elders

  4. 4

for the last time the voice of Joshua.

  5. 5

How struck down were those who had been laughing,

  6. 6

how all of them held heart and hands stock-still,

  7. 7

as if the din of thirty battles rose up

  8. 8

in a single mouth; and this mouth began.

  9. 9

And again were thousands full of wonder

  10. 10

as on the great day before Jericho,

  11. 11

but now the trumpets were inside of him,

  12. 12

and the walls of their life swayed so much

  13. 13

that they writhed, pregnant with horror

  14. 14

and defenseless already and overwhelmed, before

  15. 15

they had even thought it, how on his own authority

  16. 16

at Gibeon shouted at the sun: Stand still!

  17. 17

And God went over, startled like a servant,

  18. 18

and held the sun, until his hands

  19. 19

ached for him, over the slaughtering race,

  20. 20

only because one man willed that it stand still.

  21. 21

And that was this one; this old man it was,

  22. 22

of whom they thought that he no longer counted

  23. 23

in the midst of his hundred-and-tenth year.

  24. 24

Then he stood up and broke into their tents.

  25. 25

He came down like hail over the standing stalks.

  26. 26

What do you mean to promise God? Uncounted

  27. 27

stand gods around you, waiting for you to choose.

  28. 28

Yet if you choose, the Lord will crush you.

  29. 29

And then, with an arrogance beyond compare:

  30. 30

I and my house, we stay wedded to him.

  31. 31

Then they all cried out: Help us, give a sign

  32. 32

and strengthen us for our heavy choice.

  33. 33

But they saw him, silent as for years now,

  34. 34

    climbing toward his fortified town on the mountain;

  35. 35

and then no more. It was the last time.
